The floorboards creaked in the dark hallway as I slowly crept toward my room, wondering if my dear husband would be there or not. He rarely came in before midnight, but sometimes he'd show up shortly after dinner and stay all night. I didn't like those evenings. I much preferred my husband's indifference toward me than his attention. I silently laid a hand on the chilly doorknob and quietly pushed the door open, stopping short when I saw him in an arm chair by the window, a single light burning on a stand behind him.
I tugged on the wrist sheath strapped to my arm as I carefully pushed the door shut behind me, and walked toward the bed. He didn't move. I bit my lip, finally loosening the sheath enough to slip it off.
"It's about time you showed up."
I glanced at his chair. He was still sitting, his back to me. I knelt beside the bed, carefully stashing my wrist sheath and the blade off my back behind the dust skirt. "I didn't realize you'd be in so early."
"Where were you?" He asked coldly.
I quickly undid the sheath tied around my abdomen, and slid it on top of the blade that belonged in it, before I started taking my cowgirl boots off. "I took a walk."
"A walk?" He stood, still not turning toward me. "Really?"
I kicked my other boot off and stood up. "Yeah."
"That sounds an awful lot like 'I went to The Exchange'," he walked toward me, brow creased. He was annoyed. It took every ounce of courage I had left not to retreat. "And I thought I specifically told you not to go there tonight."
"I didn't."
"You didn't?" He asked skeptically, grabbing my shoulders and pushing me into the wall. He pressed his knuckles into the soft spot under my ribs, not wasting any time. "And if I called Ev, would he say that you didn't?"
"Yes," I answered icily, doing my best to flex my abdomen muscles and keep his fingers from hurting me. "'Cause I didn't go."
"Last chance," Rufe said, pulling out a cellphone. "You're sure there's nothing you want to tell me?"
I certainly didn't want to tell him where I actually spent my evening; but it wasn't at The Exchange. I knew better than to go where he specifically told me not to go. I wasn't the most obedient wife he could've asked for, but I'd learned my lesson the last time I went where he told me not to one night, ran into him, and spent a few days in the hospital for it. I hadn't done it again. "I didn't go to The Exchange."
"Well then, how about we check your story out, mm?"
"Go ahead," I said breathlessly, wishing he'd take a step back. Instead he stayed uncomfortably close, looming, keeping me pinned against the wall as waited for Everett to answer his phone. I looked up at my husband.
His jawline was covered in short dark hair, grown out from when he shaved this morning; the thatch of brown and gray hair on his head was a mess, but not quite long enough to be properly tangled. The skin around his eyes was tight, a sure sign that he was anxious about something. I wondered what was worrying him; hoped he didn't plan to take his stress out on me, like he often did.
"Ev?" Rufe lifted his thick eyebrows, looking down at me with shit-colored brown eyes. "Yeah. Did you see my wife today?"
I held my breath, wondering if Ev would tell the truth or not. Ev liked me even less than I liked him. He could easily lie, if he knew I was under more than the standing orders not to go around The Exchange.
"I know you were at The Exchange all day," Rufe said impatiently. "I'm asking if Alina was there, too... not that you saw? No, she's not missing. No... No. No, it's okay. Everything's under control, I was just wondering."
Rufe snapped his phone shut and slid it into his pocket. "So where did you go, if not there?"
"I just took a walk... to nowhere in particular."
"Yeah? Anyone who can verify that claim?" He asked, grabbing my shoulders again, his grip so tight it hurt. "Or am I just supposed to take your word for it?"
"I went alone," I said nearly silently, afraid of what he'd do to me if I couldn't convince him I'd just taken a walk. I couldn't fight back if he decided he wanted to hurt me. He hurt me even worse when I fought, and hurt my family besides.
"To where?"
"The river."
"Why?" He asked harshly, grabbing the pressure points on my neck with his left hand. I whimpered, unable to bite it back as my muscles seized up, temporarily paralyzing me. I knew he liked hearing me cry, and watching me squirm. I tried not to let my pride get in the way when he wanted to exercise his dominance over me-- it only made the beatings that much worse.
"I just needed some air," I gasped.
"You're going to need some air," he threw me toward the bed. "I don't believe you."
I tripped over my boots, falling across the bed face-first, sprawling across the soft blankets as I did. I rarely landed on such a soft surface when he did that. I laid perfectly still, afraid to move.
"Roll over."
I caught my breath, flexing my abdomen muscles, desperately hoping he didn't intend to hit me as soon as I obeyed. Reluctantly, I rolled over, looking up at him fearfully. He glared at me several long moments, before his expression changed. I cringed when realized what that look meant. It hurt nearly as badly, when he was in this kind of mood.
"On second thought..." He walked closer to me, shrugging his faded blue button up shirt off. He pulled the white wife-beater he wore underneath off, and stood over top of me, his old man skin sagging a bit on his chest and chubby abdomen. "I don't give a shit where you went, as long as it doesn't affect your ability now. Get your pants off, whore."
~ ~ ~
I didn't feel better again until late the next morning, after he left and I'd taken a long shower. I watched my reflection in the mirror as she carefully combed my long blond hair out, then pulled it back into a messy bun. My reflection turned her head to the side, and I carefully looked at the sharp jawline we shared, before looking into our hazel brown eyes, trying to decide what to do today. Rufe hadn't hurt me as badly as I expected he would.
I walked back into the bedroom I shared with my husband, and then into the large walk-in closet where I kept all of my things. He didn't let me keep any of them in the bedroom, saying he didn't want to trip over my junk. I didn't mind. He never came into my closet, so I could keep whatever I wanted to in it, including the various knives that I'd decided I wanted to learn to fight with all those years ago, when I discovered that Rufe's karate sensei was also an instructor of knife fighting.
I pulled on a pair of tight blue jeans and a white wife beater tank top, before shoving my feet back into the boots I was wearing the day before. I looked at myself in the mirror one last time, double-checking to be sure that none of the bruises my dear husband left the night before were visible in this outfit. I lifted a shoulder then grabbed my backpack and walked down the stairs, into the kitchen, and filled the pack with various crackers and protein bars.
Swinging the bag onto my shoulder, I walked into the already hot late morning sun, and out the gate that separated Rufe's home from the rest of his domain, into the dusty streets. I started off at a brisk pace, up the incline, to the building known as The Exchange-- figuring that if I was still forbidden from going there any more than I usually was, Rufe would've reminded me of it this morning before he left.
I walked into the run-down building, squaring my shoulders and lifting my chin as I walked past a few rough-looking men that were lingering just inside the doorway. If they didn't know whose woman I was, then I'd be afraid for my safety. As it was, I knew that I was safe in my position of Rufe's play thing. No other man dared so much as touch me, much less force me to do anything I didn't want to. The last man that tried ended up in a grave before the week was out.
I walked up to the counter, just as Ev was coming out of the back hallway. The fake smile slipped from his face as he saw me, a frown settling on his brow. "What are you doing here?"
"It's good to see you, too," I answered sarcastically, starting to walk past him.
He grabbed my wrist, pulling me around to face him. I glared at his hand a long moment, before drawing myself up and locking him in my best death glare. He wasn't scared. "Does Rufe know you're here?"
"He will, if you don't let go of me," I spat, daring him to leave his hand on me. If I were to tell my husband that I'd been to The Exchange, he'd hit me, like he always did; but if I told him that Ev tried to hurt or screw me, then Ev would get much worse than a slap, and he knew it. His grasp instantly loosened, his hand falling to his own side rather than on my arm.
"You'd best not get in anyone's way," he ordered, glaring down at me.
"I won't," I flashed a bratty grin as I walked into the narrow hallway. "Great seeing you again, Ev."
There was a short pause as I walked down the hallway, looking for an empty room, before I heard his voice again. "Hey!"
I turned around, lifting an eyebrow.
"What did you do yesterday?"
"Wouldn't you like to know," I smirked.
"...Were you here?"
I shook my head. "Nah, I had other matters to attend to."
He looked uncomfortable for a moment. "I don't think I even want to know what you were doing."
"I don't think you do," I agreed, turning and continuing down the hall. I found the door I was looking for and pushed the door open, bracing myself against the stench and sight that met me. I felt my strength waver for a moment as I looked inside.

Hi Shady!
Regardless, I do believe you wrote it well and did a tough situation like this justice. For someone so strong, I can understand why Aline can't wait to get rid of him. I can only hope she and the crew manage it sooner rather than later. It also seems like Ev and Alina share a rather interesting relationship. I can't tell if they are friends or battling enemies, really. I feel like they jump between the two, each doing whatever is in their best interest most of the time, but both just being protective of themselves. It's funny how much you can tell about a character even though you've only met them in one chapter xD
Yeah, it's me again xD I just want to say before I begin that this will be very short again xD Seeing as this chapter was just as wonderfully written as the previous one, and doesn't really leave much room for improvement. Or at least, not much that I can dig out.
It's so sad to see Alina be abused like this
One thing I am curious to know is how Alina, of all people, managed to hear about that crew who want to get rid of Rufe. It might not be easy to get news to the victims wife of all people because she might be against their plans for all they know. She could've been a royal wife. And yet she knew, and better yet she knew where to find them. When her whole schedule is on lock down like this, I am guessing it wasn't easy for her to find the gang. I know we are a bit far along in the story, but maybe she could think about how she's happy to have found that group of people, recounting how she met them in her head. I wouldn't want you to change the form of the opening chapter though, because that was fab ^^
Also, she doesn't sound like the most discrete person ever. She walks into her bedroom with all her tell tale weapons on and is only relying on the fact that she hopes her husband doesn't turn around in his chair which he could easily do at any moment. Hmph, that doesn't sound too much like a good plan. How about closing the door quietly and taking a peek before going to another room and stashing the weapons there? It seems like the only thing that would make logical sense in the middle of all this.
I feel like this sentence was too long and strung out. I have an idea for shortening it. How about: Swinging the bag onto my shoulder, I walked into the already hot late morning sun. The dusty streets greeted me as I stepped out of the gate that separated Rufe's home from the rest of his domain. See? Same sentence, different order and in two bits this time round as well.
I have absolutely nothing more to say other than this is awesome. But you already knew that! Please, continue this story and tag me or post on my wall the moment you post another chapter!

O.k. so there is a sequel.
That's good. I was slightly afraid this would just be a filler segment, just because a segment is needed but isn't actually much to say that hasn't already been said. I am glad to say this was not the case at all, particularly due the the introduction of The Exchange, the purpose of which is unrevealed, although I have my guesses. Again I have the bare minimum of criticisms, and the ones given are only matters of opinion.
Firstly, why does everyone wear wife-beater jackets. It is great the attention to detail that you give when it comes to clothing, but out of five main characters so far given three of them wear the same type of jacket. The thing is, with her husband it is practically a statement, even fore-shadowing, but now everyone wears them it kinda loses the effect.
The other thing is... crackers and protein bars? This seems to me to be the lamest attempt of taking some kind of performance food. Crackers and protein bars will not stave off hunger for long periods of time, and more importantly she hasn't taken any hydration, which is massively important nutritionally when it comes to physical performance. Just thought I'd point that out.
Anyway, another excellent work. Tell me when the next segment comes out, I'd love to read the next bit. The character interaction present is amazing, and unlike the reviewer below I was perfectly aware of the time period. Knives were not really as popular as one might think in medieval times for fighting, when other implements were so acceptable. Daggers were more popular, as were clubs of all kinds: bludgeons, cudgels, trunchons, the lot. Knives less so.
Yours in writing,
The Fiend.
Hi there! I'm back again to read more of this great story you're writing.
I hope everything I was meaning to say ends up in this review too.
So, I wrote about half of this review and then my webpage crashed and YWS didn't save it
This part most definitely didn't disappoint. I know I should've never doubted you, but I was a bit worried that this part wouldn't live up to the action and intensity of the first part. Boy was I wrong. The intensity is still there and there is still a creepy feeling I'm getting from it. Not sure if you were aiming for that, but it feels creepy to me. In a good way of course xD
I think the way Rufe treats Alina is great. Not that I'm condoning his actions, of course, but without this scene of him interrogating her, we wouldn't truly understand why she wants him dead. It was nice to see in the first part that she wants him dead and calls his a bastard, but it's even better to see him treat her like this because now we understand what her home life is like. This is her own personal hell every day.
Rufe is the perfect villain. He is menacing and creepy, and at the same time he is dominating and ruthless. I've read somewhere once that heroes must always have a flaw, but villains can be pure evil. I always keep that in mind when I'm writing my own villains and when I'm analyzing other people's villains as well. Rufe is most definitely pure evil. And it really adds to his character that he forces himself on Alina and then just disappears in the morning. There is no mention of him saying anything to her or mentioning the night before. It's just, boom, he's gone.
One thing I'd like to see explored a bit though, is how and why Rufe married Alina. Sure, he is a dominant alpha male (or so he sees himself as) and can get any girl he wants, but why Alina? Could it be that he actually had feelings for her at one point? Or does she or her family have some kind of power or money that he wants to take advantage of. There had to be something there that sparked his interest in her. I'm sure he didn't just see her and think, "Hm, I want to make this woman my wife so I can beat her and such". You get what I'm saying? I'm not sure if that would fit into the story somewhere, but that could be something you could consider explaining to us.
Just a few nitpicks for you:
When he did what? I can't decide if I think you mean when he pushes her onto the bed or when he pushes her over like that. I feel like that's something that you should be real specific about. It'll give us a good idea of what he's really like to Alina.
The ellipses you use here isn't really necessary. I get that you're wanting to get the point across that he is hesitating, possibly even thinking back on the day before, before asking her this question. However, I feel like that can be shown better by using a dialogue tag. You can say something like "He hesitated" or "He looked at me curiously, as if he was pondering something".
Ev is a very interesting character, even if we don't know what he looks like
One thing I think you're missing from this story is the description of the setting and the world it takes place in. At the beginning, I was imagining this to have taken place in a medieval time seeing as Alina was using knives and swords to fight. But then the men brought out the guns and knife boy took a picture of her with his cellphone, and Rufe also used a cell phone. So now I'm thinking it's more of a modern story than anything. I'm still not 100% sure about that though. Setting is always important in a story, as I'm sure you know. Especially here in your story, it'll help us understand what's going on and why. All that good stuff.
Overall, this is a great piece. Like I mentioned already, you did a good job keeping up the intensity and the overall feel of the story. As you continue writing, try to focus on the setting a bit more. We've gotten a great idea of who the characters are, so it'll be nice to see the world that they live in. And if you expand on Ev's character I think this will be great.
Keep writing!

Vyper buddy! I'm here for a review like I promised.
Praise:
This does well for the plot as we can see just what kind of man Rufe is and what kind of hell Alina lives in because of him. This is great motivation for the previous piece and really backs up the conflict that happened in the previous piece. But I do have a few questions about Rufe that will be covered in my Question part of this review.
Criticism:
We don't know anything about what The Exchange I feel you could have lengthened this piece to include an explanation or show us what The Exchange is, instead of waiting until a future installment comes out as we know nothing about it and have no hints given to us. Now I can guess based on Rufe's strict forbidding of her going there and Ev's reaction to Alina being there. Another criticism I have is that we do not know what Ev looks like as you don't provide any details during the conversation or when Alina see's him.
Question:
Now in the previous piece and in this piece Alina mentions that Rufe was able to manipulate officials into letting his marriage with Alina become legal despite her being unwilling. In this piece we see that Rufe is loaded in cash as he lives in a mansion. My question is this: What is Rufe's official occupation? Religious man, multi-million dollar company owner? Those are my guesses, I would like to see my question answered in the next piece.
Overall:
I'm going to be blunt and say this was an alright installment. It does great for the plot since we now know more about what kind of man Rufe is, though I feel you could have lengthened this piece a bit the explain what The Exchange was. We don't get any detail on what Ev looks like. Overall, I have to his this installment a 6/10 I hope to see improvements in the future. I'm Avalon and this has been your review.
Oh, goodness, I can't believe I forgot to describe Ev. >.< I'll definitely edit this chapter, as per your recommendations.
