Over the bridge

PreviousNext

Waking up, for me, never starts with me opening my eyes. When I first claim my consciousness, I need a little time to adjust to the newness of the day... It always feels like a whole different world, a whole new beginning. like yesterday never existed. And opening my eyes, and seeing, feels like it's too much to take in at once.

But when I wake up now, I can tell that the newness isn't present. The air to my lungs feels musty, and wet. It's too silent .

I force my eyes open, and i can hardly see my own hand. Something is wrong. I try to move, but i'm still dazed, and have to lay still on my back for a few moments to come to my senses.

That star isn’t above me anymore. It must be a few hours after I fell asleep.

I turn around on my side to look at the side of a wall and Naz’s sweater. And his shoes. Shit.

Well. He must be around here somewhere.

I take the jacket I’ve been using for a blanket and put my arm through the sleeve. it’s too big for me, and too light for the briskness of of the night. It’s perfect for running, though-no extra bulk. the water that runs through this creek has risen with the rain and overflowed onto the concrete platform I’m on , so the bottom of the coat is stiff with frozen water. I roll the fabric outwards, where it stays. I laugh a little to myself, softly. It looks odd, flaring like that. But it’s better than a cold waist and a wet shirt.

There’s a sort of hill that leads up from the creek. The grass is slick with mud that’s been loosened, and I realize why Naz left his shoes on the platform-they’d get ruined if he wore them out. I go back under the bridge to unlace mine.

My head feels so heavy. It wants to fall onto the cement. Crush itself.

I'm so tired.

The mud isn’t deep, but it’s cold and makes it difficult to walk in. Thankfully, it isn’t too tall a hill. Just a sloping ditch, really. I look up at the bridge and...that was easy..er than I thought it would be.

Naz is sitting on one of the bridge posts.

I don’t know how he does that. He isn’t really sitting, even. It’s more of a crouch, with both feet together, and his arms wrapped around his knees. His head is buried in the space between them, so all you can see is his hair coming out of his shirt, like some overgrown, dead, yellow plant.

I can’t see that well in the darkness, but the way the planks creak when I step on them is warning enough that they aren’t stable. Probably rotten.

Now, trying to get the attention of a maybe-sleeping insomniac who is maybe-sleeping on a probably-rotten post, above a risen creek, without killing him, is a delicate thing to do. I can’t startle him. So I can’t tap or shout at him to wake him up.

That is, if he is sleeping.

Can’t take chances. If he’s sleeping, even in that god-awful position he’s in, then... well. He’s sleeping. That’s what matters.

I don’t want to take chances. I walk myself over to the bridge, and sit down there, leaning on Naz’s post so I can feel through if he loses balance.

This is why neither of us ever sleep. Hardly ever.

I really like this story so far. I especially liked your opening couple of paragraphs. You start out by describing how she normally wakes up slowly, and how there's normally a sense of wonder starting off the day. Because she doesn't feel that this time, however, it immediately shows that there's something wrong, even before we know what it is. Nicely done.

I also liked how it ends with how neither of the characters sleep very much. It makes me want to know why.

My one complaint is that nothing much actually happens in this part. It seems like an odd place to split up the story, right when it was getting good.

Overall, great job! I hope you continue it.

yeah, i have a really weird flow. It's something I have to work on. I've never planned out any of my stories, and never have finished them, so it's bound to be a little jagged. but the thing is, people can't be fighting dragons all the time. Often, they're just thinking. Doing quiet things. and that's what i'm most comfortable with right now, no matter how annoying it is to most everyone on here.
Naz never sleeps very much because of something that you'll find out in part 4. Ben(main character) doesn't sleep because he's always got one eye open for Naz, because he's afraid he'll hurt himself, etc.
There's a part 3 to this, and a part 4 coming soon. thank you for reviewing this!

Hello!
So I haven't read part one yet, but after reading this...I think I will!! :D I only have one little nitpick. :)

"If he's sleeping, even in that god-awful position he's in, then... well. He's sleeping."

I don't know why, but this sentence sounds wrong.... :D (Maybe it's just me. :) ) Maybe you could transform it into one sentence, and add, and take away some things-

"If he's sleeping, even in that god-awful position he's in, then...well...he's sleeping."

(this is just a suggestion though :) ) Really good though! :D Great job, and keep writing! :D :)
~Snazzy :)

thanks! i'll change it.

:D Now...onward, or backwards, to part one!! :D :)

dont don't don't it's so bad. it was my first post, and i didn't edit it at all. it is reaaaalllllyyyy badly done.

sorry...right after I clicked submit review I saw you had replied to my comment. It really wasn't that bad at all, just a few grammar mistakes is all. :D

Damn. Like honestly... Damn. Your first chapter does not do justice to your writing skill! This was amazing compared to the first one (no offense, I mean, but this one's *good*!)

So, to start: the beginning. It's hooking, it's deep, it's telling. It's great! I think it was a great start to the chapter, and caught me right away.

The chapter is a lot of thinking, but your nice description makes it enjoyable all the same. Though, maybe a few sentences, or even a word of dialogue would really make it perfect (in my opinion, at least)

Another great thing was your word choice! It sounded sophisticated and all around brilliant.

I totally want to know: why. Do. They. Live. Under. The. Bridge?????¿?????? (Assuming that's where they live at least) I MUST KNOW.

And the end was pretty brilliant too. I want more! Please write more, and let me know when you do :)

Happy writing!!

(sorry, i posted this before, but in the wrong place)

Thank you for the feedback! you're very kind.
To answer your question: they aren't living there. they're spending the night under a bridge because it's been raining and the pipes, that they usually hide out in at night, which are usually warmer and more secure, are flooded. They've been sort of blown with the wind for a while, although they do have a home they intend to get back to. Right now, they're looking for something that will be revealed in later installments.
I'll try to keep you posted when I write a part 3 to this!
