I exist

E - Everyone

In poetry

The feeling of floating.

The feeling of being outside of the body.

The noise sounding like its being heard through headphones.

The sight being zoomed out.

The body feeling weird.

The brain tells you, you are not real, you feel as though you are not.

You feel as if you are watching from a distance, through eyes that are not yours, you are not you but merely a spectator.

The world does not feel real, as though it was created and someone is controlling it, baby its a giant playing fools, maybe it is a simulation, maybe its a dream, maybe it is a game, maybe it is a movie or TV show.

You cannot distinct reality from dreams anymore, but who is to say any of it is reality at all?

Time flies, you blink and it is a new second, you miss things right in front of you, you forget the good and the bad, so many gaps in the memory, switching from first person to third, not knowing when it all started or when it all will stop.

You don't know what it is, what is happening, or why it is.

You only remember memories starting from a certain age, consciousness just starting, snapping into the mind.

A spark of realization hits, you learn new information.

Derealization, feeling as though nothing is real, you, the world, the things around you, feeling as though you are out of your body, as though you are spectating.

Depersonalization, not knowing who you are, anything about you.

I exist.

You repeat as though it is a motivational quote.

I am real.

A gentle reminder to live in the moment.

I am here.

Grounding back to the body.

I exist, I am real, and I am here.

You exist.

We all exist.

Though some feel as though they do not.

We exist.

You exist.

I exist.

I just published one with the same title then fell on this like 3 mins later!!
What I love most about this is that it feels so real and relatable. Your words capture the feeling perfectly.
"You cannot distinct reality from dreams anymore, but who is to say any of it is reality at all?" This line captures it all. Sometimes we feel unreal, the world feels unreal so much that we doubt what is real and what not.

"We all exist". thanks for this brief yet heavily meaningful line.

Hi, Pebble here with a review of your poem!

The brain tells you, you are not real, you feel as though you are not.

I appreciate that you published such a vulnerable and meaningful work about your own experiences. You described something that can feel weird and scary and turned it into a work of art. Poetry that turns an uncomfortable experience into beautiful words that other people can read and relate to is one of my favorite kinds of poetry.
Your descriptions felt emotional and real, even when depicting feelings of things being unreal.
Time flies, you blink and it is a new second, you miss things right in front of you, you forget the good and the bad, so many gaps in the memory, switching from first person to third, not knowing when it all started or when it all will stop.

I liked the formatting, how the poem starts with shorter lines about what the depersonalization feels like, blending to longer lines with run-on sentences about derealization in the middle of the poem, and then ending with calmer lines affirming that things are real, that you exist.
That last section is my favorite part of this poem. Lately I’ve been experiencing a lot of feelings of numbness, which obviously isn’t the same as depersonalization or derealization, but these lines speak to my own feelings, reminding me that I am real and I exist even when I feel like nothing.
I exist.
You repeat as though it is a motivational quote.
I am real.
A gentle reminder to live in the moment.
I am here.

This poem has a strong ending, with three lines repeating the same “motivational quote.” The way it leads from “we exist” to “you exist” to “I exist” gave me shivers. The repetition throughout the ending of the poem about existence and being real asserts the theme of reality, of existence. This poem lets readers know that whatever they may feel, they are real, they are here, they exist, and they will be okay.
Thank you for writing something with such an important meaning behind it.

Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed the poem and understood some of the techniques.

great poem! whenever i experience derealization, it does feel a lot like how it's described in this. I especially relate to, " You feel as if you are watching from a distance, through eyes that are not yours, you are not you but merely a spectator.

The world does not feel real, as though it was created and someone is controlling it, baby its a giant playing fools, maybe it is a simulation, maybe its a dream, maybe it is a game, maybe it is a movie or TV show. " When a life changing event occurs. at the end, when it repeats lines confirming existence, i think you demonstrate the feeling of being grounded/grounding yourself well. all in all, great poem!

Thank you!

It is only a novel... or, in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour, are conveyed to the world in the best-chosen language
