Here it is. Philosophy. It took me three hours of sleep, and three more of editing. Hahah. Enjoy. Feel free to criticize. :)
Children live in the present,
adults live in the past.
Teenagers live in the future...
How come the youngest be the wisest ones?
The adult tends to live in the could've been's...
Regretting the past they can't fix,
the memories they can't erase,
and the broken cups they can still mend.
Forgetting what mistakes made them realize.
And ignoring their own advice;
what they once told the youngest ones
within the notes of a lullaby.
Duerme, mi niño...
Sleep well and tight.
Today you crawled because you fell when you walked.
But each step was worth it, corazón.
Don't regret the bruises,
cause they'll help you grow.
The adolescent won't accept conformism as a friend.
They'll always be looking for something else.
Committed with Fear to a contradictory duel
with no other responsibility than their stubborn selves.
Not knowing exactly what it is they crave to find.
Perhaps acceptance, perhaps a cloud;
Somewhere where changing the world is allowed
by the rushed pessimistic crowds.
They seek for the freedom
their rebellious ideology provokes;
That liberty that they can't see within whims or greed,
the chainless life that only the youngest ones feel.
While the little one wander with excitement,
where curiosity isn’t hard to find;
In the simplest and least expected place,
where the older ones yawn.
Children live day by day,
and discover the same things every time.
While the youth is still creating dreams with plasticine.
And the olders are destroying their castles of sand.
Children live in the present,
adults live in the past.
Teenagers live in the future,
and the youngest are smart.
While the old people smile,
and accept life is not something you owe;
It’s just a road made of time,
where we all are walking on.
I didn't know you were such a philosopher, Gee.
I'm not much a poem connoisseur, but I have to say the flow and diction on this piece is superb, and the theme you chose is very unique. It's almost like a commentary on our ridiculously backwards and "modern" society. I know I don't have much to offer in the way of constructive criticism, but even I did, I wouldn't need to. You have done a marvelous job of perfecting this yourself.
Aww. Thanks, Tommydear<3 I appreciate your comment a lot! It means a lot to know your opinion.
And there... You saw my serious side. Hahaha. xD
Have you thought about this as a Performance Poetry piece? That form is taking off big time here in the UK.
<3
it was good, there is one line "and the youngest are smart " that line just doesn't seem to flow with the rest of the poem. Other than t hat I didn't find any mistakes, everything else flowed nicely, and it's an interesting concept.
Thanks. :]
First of all, this comes as a surprise. Now that you've presented some philosophy over here, you wouldn't mind a bit of philosophy in a review either, would you?
A friend once told me that childhood is overrated. I didn't agree completely, but it helped me realize that maybe it's just one's present phase of life that matters the most. You may cherish your past, hope for your future but you are what you are now . An interesting quote I'd like to share here:
"So be it, there are more important things than childhood. And perhaps I have the prospect of far more childish happiness, earned by a life of hard work, in my old age than any actual child would have the strength to bear, but which then I shall possess." ~ Investigations of a Dog by Franz Kafka
"Which phase of life ranks number one?" The question is unanswerable. Nothing can be said. And I like your almost neutral attitude in this respect. The poem appears to be a remark, a comment on what you intend to write about, although occasionally you incline towards 'the youngest are smart', practically treating adults as losers ;P (which may be true in a lot of cases, though).
A nice comforting conclusion. So what do I have you say about this poem? Well, I enjoyed reading it, not a lot to criticize about grammar, looks well worked and guess what? hard work pays. Thanks for sharing this wonderful poem with us!
Keep writing,
Shoaib
P.S : Mind translating the Spanish parts?
Hahaha. Thanks, shoaib.
Your comment is very well appreciated. Although, I never said adults are not smart! Neeever. You were the one who said that.
I was just emphasizing that children are smart, which is not a lie. Lol. I believe all phases of life are important, mainly because you get to learn something different in each one of them. But I also think childhood is the most important one, for what happens throughout those first years of a life can affect an individual's development from many perspectives in the future; cognitively, emotionally, socially and physically. Children can adapt to situations easier than adults do, and that is because they're not exactly used to something; they've just begun to have their first experience and as lame as they may seem, they're all important. And that is because we associate situations to those first memories forever; whether if it's consciously or unconsciously. The human brain is a big mystery, I say. Gotta love it!
And when it comes to the Spanish: "Duerme, mi nino" means "Sleep, my child." And "corazon" means "heart"; which is a nickname people give their love ones here; somewhat like "sweetie".
Thanks again! Your comment placed a smile on my face. <3 And writing huge replies makes me laugh, so. xD Gracias, gracias, mi amigo. Hahah.
I love it! So true, great job.
Thanks.
Wow, this is fantastic. Barely know what to say. It kind of made my day
Every word is simple and true, and really makes me think that I should try harder to live in the present. The whole poem has this warm feeling about it, somewhat like when your grandparent tells you a story. I find it hard to believe that someone as young as yourself can be this wise.
My favorite part, I think. It immediately grabbed hold of me and wouldn't let me stop reading. I also like how you ended it all with a part about old people.
If I absolutely have to complain about something it would be these parts:
They don't quite flow as well as the rest does.
Truly amazing. Keep writing!
Ah. Thank you. I didn't quite notice about those lines util now that you mention it. I will be working on them.
And not that wise, just a good observer. xD Gracias.
