The Tale of a House Kitten

When I was taken from my mother, I knew better things were to happen; but when those cold hands picked up my fragile body, I doubted the journey would be a happy one. I was put into a cold metal box. Noises emitted from other boxes and in them were kittens like me. The solitude was almost unbearable. The only relief I felt was when I was taken to see little humans. They were a rough bunch usually, but for some reason their touch was comforting. I didn't know it at the time, but they were planning on giving me away. Most times the children didn't like me because, I'd claw at them when they scratched my stomach. There was one girl, however, that enjoyed my company, and she was very gentle. Her hands were slow, and her eyes showed kindness.

One person I will never forget was the one with the sticky hands and funny hair. He couldn't hold me correctly so most of the time I was struggling to get out of his tight grasp. He was loud too and whenever I talked to him he'd say the funniest thing, "Meow..." I didn't understand his jargon, but I guess he was trying to impress me. The last day I was in the cold box, I had given up hope. No one would adopt a tiny black cat like me, especially when humans saw my coat as a sort of bad luck. When the box lady came to pick me up, however, she started communing with me. I couldn't understand her, but it didn’t sound good since the tone of her voice was rather dull.

I was scared of her. She had some sort of weird marking on her face. Her lips were colored the oddest shade of red, and her claws sometimes jabbed me when she came to pick me up. Her coat astonished me the most though. Every time I saw her it was different.

The places they lived in were so strange. They call them "houses". I thought of them more as a bigger box. They didn't have much fur though, but the fur they had growing from their heads was peculiar. They didn't have very sharp claws either, and they walked on their back legs. The thing that scared me the most was when they spoke! They were either too loud, or they'd mock me by saying, "Meow". I almost tried speaking their language, but it's never consistent. When they talk to me, they meow when they talk to their kind, it's something very different.

My day of joy had come that day when the box lady took me into the "human room". There she gave me to a little human. She had short head fur and had a bright pink fur coat. She looked friendly, and when I was placed into her arms my hypothesis was proven correct. Her hands were steady, somewhat cold, but gentle. The bigger human would take me from her occasionally and check me over. I didn't like this one bit, and I scratched her to give her a piece of my mind; but she didn't take my warning. She held me close and rubbed my head. For some reason this calmed me down. I thought it to be some sort of witchcraft, but it was too sweet to be.

When I had played around with the little human some more, they started communing with each other. The little humans voice was so high pitched, and the mother's was soft and rather low. After what seemed forever, they made their decision. I knew something was different because, the box lady didn't come to take me this time. The little girl picked me up, and brought me closer to the light. Some sort of exchange happened, and they put this uncomfortable ring around my neck; and tightened it till it fit snuggly. I was put into a different looking box—brown this time. It had holes in it, and I within it was placed on the little human's lap.

Even though no one was moving... I was! We were going so fast. I couldn't keep my balance, and I was terrified by the noises surrounding us as we "hit the road", as the humans call it. I started calling out to my new-found mother, but she didn't take me out to hold me she just talked to me. Her voice wasn't comforting at this time, however, because I was constantly being jostled in the box. I was going to lie down, but I was too frightened.

What will they do to me if I do?! I thought aloud.

The test was over soon though, and I was taken into one of those big boxes called "houses". I was taken out of the tiny box, and shown around to all the other humans.

Are they going to eat me?! I wondered when they showed their teeth.

But they didn't... they just held me, and played with me. Me and the little human, that I met at the "human room", began to get to know each other. She talked to me, and one word I picked up was "Molly". I assumed that was what I should call her by so I started saying it; and she "meowed" at me again. Then she'd say other words such as: Fluffy, Blacky, Sweety that the other humans would either cheer for or despise. Why there were so many y's I will never know, but she ended up calling my blacky. I guess it was fine; I had no idea what it meant, but it sounded wonderful. And that was the beginning of my start in the human world.

It was a pleasant one. One I will cherish till I become old and frail; and I will remember Molly as my savior to whom I am eternally grateful. I will always enjoy the time I have with her, and I will also endure much just to be with her. She must always remember to feed me though, or I might resort to hunting! I've heard from other cats that bunnies are delicious--but that, my friend, is the tale of a house kitten like me. There will be many more things to come, but Molly will always be there for me; and I know I shall not go hungry. To other fellow kittens or cats: when your new-found mother says the words, "I love you" then you'll know you've been accepted into their box of fun.

Hello! ^_^
This is my first review, so I hope to make it a good one!

This is a very cute and sweet story. It's also interesting and pretty fun. I enjoyed it from the start to the end. :D I had a black cat when I was young. And now I think I know his past story before he found me too.

The kitty's thoughts are amazing! I mean we always tend to say 'meow' when we're petting or talking to our pet cats. But truly we don't even know what that means! And when the cat doesn't understand that word either, it's pretty funny!

I like the way you've written the story from the point of view of a small black kitty. I got the chance to know what animals think about humans because of that. And you also introduced many types of people throughout the story. That's amazing!!! :D :D

Small errors,

I didn't understand his jargon, but I guess me was trying to impress me.

I think the fist 'me' should be 'he' because you're talking about that boy.

or I might resort to hunting! I've heard from other cats that bunnies are delicious game--and that

There should be an 'a' between are and delicious because it seems as if it's missing a determiner.

Anyway, this is an amazing story, and I really enjoyed it!!!
Never stop writing!!!
Orange.

I'm so glad you liked it! Thanks for the review! (:

This was cute. Like, really, really cute. I'm surprised I didn't die of the cuteness of the situation, because I am about as sensitive to cuteness as most humans are to gamma radiation.

But since I was sent here to politely give a review (that should preferably not be filled with 'squeees' for five whole paragraphs), I've come to utilize my writing brain in order to properly digest this. Let's start with your purpose: if it was to murder your readers with cuteness, for the most part you've succeeded. For all that it's worth, it's not a very ambitious work, and it really doesn't have to be--it's about a kitten, gosh darn it. You aren't supposed to make a three-part tragedy about a kitten.

With that said, I liked how you used the kitten's perspective to comment on the little things that make humans weird. Really, really weird. I can't say I've ever thought twice about houses and the weirdness of wearing fur, but it makes sense for a kitten to do it.

If I have any complaint, though, it's probably the fact that sometimes it can seem a little disorganized in its thought process. In the beginning the kitten is just commenting on his new home, and then he talks about houses by the fourth or fifth paragraph--have they seen houses, yet? Or were they talking about the pet center, or the houses outside the pet center? But then it suddenly shifts into their day of joy, the time they finally found their owner, and then suddenly they're being taken away once again. Messy isn't exactly a detrimental trait, but it is worth thinking about how to transition from one topic to another.

Overall, though, it was a lovely piece, and I really did like reading it.

Signing out,

--EM.

Aww, thanks! I'm so glad you think so. I didn't think many people would like it. :D

I am going to review your work today.
Ok let me start by saying I love kittens and that the title is very eye catching. I can tell there is a few errors in there or are they on purpose? The beginning of the story is kinda sad and yet really happy at the same time. More towards the middle it starts to be a good happy setting for the kitten. The ending was purrfect you couldn't have made it any better then what it was.

Keep up the good work and I hope to see more of your work later on.
Have a nice day.
