The Golden West fleeting sunset, now grisaille, stripped to ashen smears: what pigments did you boast that brought him close to tears? nose-bridge mirrors, round as dimes, reflected countless skies, so why were you, through ragged fence, granted lasting prize?
my writer-cowboy-great-great grandpa, spellbound by your face, clicked the shutter, worked the film, and tucked you in your place: a yellowed sleeve, one of many, housing treasured views, gently indexed, ordered, labeled—poetic inky blue.
“the golden west,” he put for you, evoking times of old, when as a kid he ranched and rangered from his father’s mold. so was he struck by gilded clouds and gleaming yellow rays? or was he swept by memories of treks through purple sage?
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
ooooo I like "Bucking the snow" it's painting such a clear scene! and the rhyming for your latest poem is quite nice. Keep up the good work!
I won't go down by myself, but I'll go down with my friends I'm taking back the life you stole Came a time when every star fall brought you to tears again
ohmygoodness wolfi! These are already so soooo good! I absolutely love the aesthetic of the old poems and the way you use words to write a story for each photo. Absolutely in love with these!

Such a beautifully formatted thread and poems already Wolfi! There is such a specific sense of time and place in these first two especially with the added visuals, they do feel very rooted in history and reality.
Looking forward to reading more this month!
you should know i am a time traveler & there is no season as achingly temporary as now
Hey Wolfi! I love this thread :0 'The Golden West' is so good - I love the premise of the poem being about wondering what colours the sunset would have been based on the negative, and the rhyming works so well with this piece. My favourite lines:
fleeting sunset, now grisaille, stripped to ashen smears: what pigments did you boast that brought him close to tears?
Favourite phrases: "nose-bridge mirrors" is a great way to describe glasses! I also really enjoy the rhythm of "my writer-cowboy-great-great grandpa"
@Liminality aaa thank you for sharing your reflection! It's always good to hear that the intended meanings came across correctly <3

Hey Wolfi - its so interesting to read your poems as they're inspired by things of your great-great grandpa. A very unique take! I really like "Bucking the Snow" Keep up the great work and I hope to read more of you soon!
The Lady - The Joshua - The Man Joshua Tree, Family Tree, here I rest oar, To lift this negative up to light And reflect on bygone lore.
Sentimental winds brought me ashore To one little day in black and white: Family Tree, Joshua Tree, here I rest oar.
“A hat I’ll buy,” the Lady swore, “Dare next adventure be as bright,” As if her squint knew bygone lore.
What of Joshua, whose daggers soar? No doubt he mocked the Lady’s height And mine, I fear, while resting oar.
And then the Man, who built a door That sent me sailing into flight, A voyage into bygone lore—
He, too, journeyed o’er seas of yore, Casting parted days in fading light. Joshua Tree, Family Tree, here I rest oar And see my reflection in bygone lore.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this formatting! The cuts over the picture, the way the first line of the last verse falls along what miiight be a little side trail. And the way you put these tiny glimpses of stories into these pictures is so lovely. I feel like I've seen a hundred pictures like this in national park visitor centers, but your poetry puts them all in a new perspective. : D

Aw Vent!! Love and appreciate these thoughts, thank you! <3

Oh my gosh I absolutely love this last poem!! The rhyme scheme adds such a perfect rhythm to it it just flows in a way that I think really intensifies the theme.
"sentimental winds brought me ashore" AHH I love that line sooo much!
ah can't wait to see more seriously and I love these pictures so much!
