In The monster within…

*This fanfic chapter is underneath my folder titled “The monster within…”. What is this a fanfic of, you ask? Well, it’s a fanfic of the R.L. Stine movie “Monsterville: Cabinet of Souls”. It takes place a year after the events in the movie and the main characters of this fanfic are the side characters of the movie. Gacha Club character designs are under my forum titled “My character designs<33[2]”. Enjoy!*

NICOLE (Back at home)

Mom just got back home with my little brother, Jake. I can hear him giggling downstairs. She picked him up from school and now that he’s here, he’s going to screech with energy until Mom gives him his goldfish snack.

I put on my noise-canceling headphones. Am I studying? Well, kind of.

It’s not schoolwork I’m studying for (I already did that).

Beth said that Dr. Hysteria had a “Carnival of Creeps” back in the eighteen hundreds. We didn’t listen to her then, but now?

Now I want to see this for myself.

“A history of adolescent disappearances-Carnival of Creeps.”

I click on the article.

“From 1819 to 1912, the Carnival of Creeps attracted many visitors to Nyack, New York. The Carnival featured many fascinating works of nature, from the three-eyes goblin to the dragon demon.

But even more interestingly were the links to disappearances of adolescents.

It is not confirmed, but people believe that many young kids from the age of thirteen to the age of nineteen were abducted by Benjamin Wright and his daughter, Annmarie Wright, or as more commonly known at the time, Dr. Hysteria and Lilith the Enchantress.

The first disappearances on record happened in 1823, when sixteen year olds Betty Alden and Mildred Samuels visited the carnival. They were proclaimed missing the day after. Right after they went missing, new monsters had joined the carnival of creeps. Two haggard “witches” as they were called.

The Carnival of Creeps shut down for good after well-respected mother Amelia James claimed to have seen Lilith trying to “enchant” her fifteen year old son, Malcolm James.”

So they’ve been doing this for years? People may have not been able to record it, but they’re still out there.

Downstairs, Jake is happily eating goldfish.

At least he’ll never turn into a monster.

Hey creeper! Me again!

Love the concept of taking side characters from an existing story and expanding on their worlds yourself, a la Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Not the first work of yours I've read where you've done that, and I really like it!

Mom just got back home with my little brother, Jake. I can hear him giggling downstairs. She picked him up from school and now that he’s here, he’s going to screech with energy until Mom gives him his goldfish snack.

Ooo, this reads like a diary entry so far.

“A history of adolescent disappearances-Carnival of Creeps.”

I doubt this is at all connected, but this reminds me of another story of yours about the circus characters, featuring the conjoined twins!

People may have not been able to record it, but they’re still out there.

Maybe everyone who's tried to record it gets pulled into the carnival, eeks!

I enjoyed this one! The contrast between the spooky news article and the annoying brother downstairs eating goldfish is a nice touch.

Keep up the great work, as always!

Hmm I wonder when Nicole had the time to do her studying. I got the impression that they’ve been really busy recently!
Hmmmmmmm the article is kinda mysterious but I’m stuck at her little brother just casually eating goldfish. And he’s not turning into a monster? Then what is this?? ^^°

Ah well too short. But no matter :) Have the comment anyway and maybe someone else takes the story out of the Green Room <3

Oh, it%u2019s just regular goldfish. He won%u2019t turn into a monster from that.

Thx for reading!

Several months later, but Tika, you might not know that Goldfish are an American snack? He's not just munching down on an actual fish!

Hi again, I am medicated and back to write one more review.

I like that the news article here is written appropriately. It really does seem like something that would be published in one of those small journals back in the early 2000s. I've visited a bunch of them in the past for research, and you nailed the vibe.

I do have a couple of suggestions, however, mostly grammatical and not really impacting the plot.

Mom just got back home with my little brother, Jake. I can hear him giggling downstairs. She picked him up from school and now that he’s here, he’s going to screech with energy until Mom gives him his goldfish snack.“

Again, I think this sentence is a little wordy, and doesn't really belong in the beginning of the chapter. Having looked at the prior iterations, I really think it could use a transition from previous to present. It could also be brought down to 2 sentences.

"Downstairs, I can hear my little brother Jake giggling and screeching. My mom must have picked him up from school, and now he's here..."

Two haggard “witches” as they were called

I think there should be a comma here. It would be grammatically correct. The article could also be a little longer, and include some references to pop culture like the previous article.

I liked the ending, because it contrasts this horror circus with a mundane, everyday activity. Also, foreshadowing.

Keep writing,

Vic.

Thank you for reading and your suggestions!

This was my first story on this website and I must say I am interested. I wouldn't say I am a RL Stein fan but I did enjoy Goosebumps and I can say that this reminds me of Goosebumps!

R.L. Stine wrote Goosebumps.

Glad you enjoyed!
