An Ode To Mathematics

Spoiler! :
Reading to a math re-take on a holiday + random sentence from brother + free time = THIS. And yes, this is written for humoristic reasons, math fans don't hate me! ...There's a 'Like'-button in the upper left corner... Just saying. ;)

These fingers are dead and numb
from gripping this crimson knife;
the grinning mouths on my wrist
gurgle their deadly song.

These fingers are dead and numb
from turning blood-soaked pages;
the laughing numbers conceal
the damned value of 'x'.

Please write about Biology next. lol

Really cool (because it's against Math), although its hard at first to see what you're talking about.

Still, it's cool (because its against Math!)

*facepalm*

this piece is so true...Haha. When you get stuck, you feel like slamming the book closed and ignoring it. Calc and Algebra both suck :/ they remind me of Chinese water torture. It's not bad at first but as the hours drag on you begin to think you're going crazy >.<

Anyway, good poem ^_^

Do you like Math? Well, I love it! And I will do everything to protect its rights. All I can comment to your poem about Math is... I love it! Yes, there are times when someone will, like, hate math and destroy it or something, I get that to sometimes as well as SO MANY people! So, I give you a thumbs up for your dare of showing the world the harshness of Mathematics!

For one, what really annoyed me was that there was no capital letter at the start of the sentence. It really got me angry for some reason. Sorry, that's the way I am.
Anyway, I enjoyed it. It's not something I would read but for some reason it caught my attention. I also disliked the way it's so short. You could add something onto it to make it longer. Just a suggestion.

Phew. When I saw the title of this poem I thought it would be an actual ode to maths. But I read it anyway because I was curious and bored, and I'm glad I did. I love this poem! My maths teacher's been throwing trigonometry at us lately, even though we're not supposed to even know what it is until next year, so I can really relate to this. If there was a 'love' button, I would click it :D

I also held off on reading this because I was under the impression it was some crazy 'I love math' poem. Which i have no problem with it just wouldn't have been my cup of tea. :) Anyways bravo and thank you for this it made me laugh!

I thought you were going to write about how much you love math - I am very glad to see that this is actually the complete opposite. :P

Sorry people, I've never had this many comments, so I didn't know they continued onto page 2. Haha, that just means I won't answer everyone individually, but thanks a million y'all! :)

Hello there

I really love this. I to know what it's like not to be a massive fan of mathematics, so this is definitely relatable.

I love poems that make everyday issues bigger and more dramatic. However I love how your tongue is in cheek the whole time. In conclusion, really lovely.

So I've already told you that I loved this, Writer, but I figured I'd come and drop a review for you just to make it public! I swear that you've captured the essence of all teenage angst in one focal point--and in a good channel!

Also, I've always thought of math as a sort of religious experience; after all, x is unto all things as far as the east is from the west, forever and ever amen, am I right? :P

My only suggestion is that you maybe not use so much blood imagery all at once for such a teenie tiny poem! I mean, don't get me wrong--blood imagery is the bomb, but just not in one mighty gush!

Also, please, for the love of God, continue writing. :)

Oh my gosh. My feelings for math are in words. I. I. I'm in love!!! :) Ha ha. Really awesome.

Being somebody who really is andvanced in math, and really hates the subject, I was... touched in a way, I guess. I always say to myself, in the midst of the grueling hours of my homework, why the hell, WHO the hell wants to know the value of X.

Woah. ^_^
*confesses* i avoided this piece for a long time, even though it was in the "featured works" section, just because i thought it would be some weird love-of-math poem. And math blows. But WOW. lol it was great! i agree that you should maybe think about adding on to it or 'sprucing it up' a bit... but all in all, i absolutely loved it! Great job! *follow* :DD

If you remove the title, you can't pretty much tell that it's about Math XD. But I like it though. :) Keep it up! Maybe, it'll be better if it was longer.

Woah, thanks for all the comments and likes! :)

Bolshevik, I lol'd when I read your comment, thanks for that. :D

Lele, I'll try to explain it as well as I can. As the title suggests, the poem adresses mathematics. It has no "symbolic" meaning (at least not intentionally :P), it's just a teenage guy complaining about how he had to read for a math exam on every day of his holiday. I hope that answers your questions. ^^

Thanks Alex, and no sweat; it's hard to find critisism in such a short piece. I've had Trig this year, and Algebra, and at the moment we have Analytic Geometry. It gets irritating at times. :D

Thanks to you too holyiao. *bows* :)

..Nice!..Wonderful!..I love it..You deserves a round of applause..[claps and people screaming and flowers and you smiling and bowing]..

..I agreed with them..math isn't that bad..it's amazing, really..when you get to solve for x or any other letter..or when you've used a whole paper and the answer is just zero..it's challenging..though, like you, I never like math..I just go with the flow..everybody do that..

..By the way,I learned how to do calculus before I learned how to do chemistry(the chemical reaction equations)..haha..and I don't know how to drive, not yet...

Wonderful poem. Brief and to the point. Yes, we all feel this way when doing math, except I'm taking Geometry this year, and it's basically Algebra with shapes. But next year is Trig. Wwll, I love your poem, and I'm sorry that there's no constructive criticizm I can give to you.

I like this poem, but I don't get it. What is it about? Who is it about? But the most important of all questions. Why did you write it? If the answers are not too personal I would like to know.

Haha, thanks for all the positive comments! :)

Yeah, I see what you mean. I could try and add a little to it, maybe another stanza in the middle or somewhat. But we'll just have to see if I can conquer my laziness. :D But yah, I'll see what I can do about sprucing it up.

And Delanie, I think I wrote this for everyone. ;)

Ohemgee, did you write this for me? I totally understand where you're coming from because math sucks. I mean, it rocks *rolls eyes* Anyways, I agree with Mrs. Elizabeth Darcy, you don't really understand what you're talking about until the end so perhaps spruce it up with a lot more sarcasm and hate :) Love it!

SNOINK. I learned how to do Calculus before I learned how to drive alsooooooo! You're my math soul sister!

Anyway, as to the poem, I actually really liked it. I wrote two poems about my frustrations about math as well, except they were in love poetry form, dedicated to a subject that is making University life hell for me right now. I'm in a Mathematical Economics class now, and yes, it is as exciting as it sounds.\:D/ :|

Good luck with Math, my friend.;)

I have no clue where you would get such an idea Mrs.E.D. Why would you even consider such an option? *the weather today is a slight downpour of sarcasm with a chance of irony*

Naah, math isn't really that bad. The thrill of succeeding in a particulary hard equation after an hour of trying to crack it beats video games. Sorta. :P About the blood thing... I dunno, I guess it's fairly used these days. It's an easy way out to convey a strong emotion. ;)

Okay, Skins, your partial differential equations sound like they make my struggles with polynomial equations and analytical geometry seem trivial. xD

Thanks for the likes! ^^

I have to say... I absolutely adore this poem. XD I mean, I love math and all, don't get me wrong! I learned calculus before I learned how to drive. But this is soooooo true, especially as you get higher up in math. It's wonderful fun, but sometimes (i.e., PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS) it sucks so hard. XD

Anyway, liked it! :)

Mrs Elizabeth Darcy wrote a review Review · Mar 8, 2011

I get a strange feeling from this poem that you dislike math...now where did this feeling come from? If that is what you meant, could you try to make it a little more apparent? [/sarcasm] ;)

Why does everybody seem to be writing about blood today? Do I just stumble onto totally the wrong topics? You seem to put a lot of stress on the 'hate' without a lot of stress on the 'math'...the images of blood seem rather...strange...

Stupid math. I'm just catching up now with Algebra I. It's not as bad as Biology. But still.

I empathise. :P

Mrs.E.D.

Why should Caesar just get to stomp around like a giant while the rest of us try not to get smushed under his big feet? Brutus is just as cute as Caesar, right? Brutus is just as smart as Caesar, people totally like Brutus just as much as they like Caesar, and when did it become okay for one person to be the boss of everybody because that's not what Rome is about! We should totally just stab Caesar!
