Falling

In Poetry

baby, when I met you, I felt like I was floating--

up over the shiny tinsel tree tops

and oh-so-merry townsfolk.

up over the endlessly falling snow

and cheesy winter rhymes.

I was flying, baby

and I don't think I wanted to land.

.

that first year went by so quickly.

like a long, long honeymoon.

and man, was I in love.

I was sitting on cloud nine with no reason

to fall back down to earth.

I was in love, baby, don't you see?

so why couldn't you be mine

around everybody else?

.

I was smitten, I'll tell you that.

whenever I laid eyes on you,

my heart would run on adrenaline

my bones would melt like candle wax

and I could do nothing but smile

big smiles, baby.

I was blinded by infatuation--

hypnotized by pretty words.

how deceitfully gorgeous indeed.

.

baby, I was falling,

falling hard and fast.

I thought you were my everything.

you promised me your all.

boy, was I foolish to listen.

baby, I was falling

down

down

down

and I don't think you would've caught me.

Nice lyrical poem you have there, very nice. I like the idea behind this poem as well as how you've written it, with the first two stanzas singing of praise and love and then the last two, the gradual descent onto ground.

down

down

down

I love how you formatted these three 'downs', the fact that they are under each other just signifies the downfall. Simply wonderful. Your poem has a very set rhythm to it, which makes it enjoyable to read.

i was sitting on cloud nine with no reason

to fall back down to earth.

I noticed that all your 'i' are not capitalized, maybe you're trying to do something here but whatever it is, proper grammar rules apply. All single I must be capitalized. I found that the two sentences there disrupted the flow of your stanza, the first line was too long while the second line was too short. So, perhaps some rephrasing could do the job.

my bones would melt like candle wax

and i could do nothing but smile

*grins* My favourite simile of the day! Wonderful simile to compare how your bones would melt like candle wax, we all need a rest from jelly bones!

i thought you were my everything.

you promised me your all.

boy, was i foolish to listen.

Your poem is also very realistic and reflected on a lot of relationship gone bad, with girls with broken hearts and boy with forgotten promises.

So, overall. Great poem, I truly enjoyed reading this.

Thank you!! It's all much appreciated :)

"up over the endlessly falling snow

and cheesy winter rhymes."

This is not something meant to be offensive, but "cheesy winter rhymes" is exactly what I think when I read your poem. Don't know if you meant it to be like that, but it actually fits well and I think it's good.

"i was blinded by infatuation--

hypnotized by pretty words.

how deceitfully gorgeous indeed."

This part, though, is definitely not cheesy, and is my favorite part as well. It really sums up the whole premise of your poem, and explains well the emotions and thoughts that I sense you are trying to convey with your work. A lot of people have "fallen" into this trap.

Thank you xDarkHeart27x!

It was meant to start out light and fluffy (and cheesy) before dulling into something a bit more...realistic. Thank you for the review!

The poem itself is very nice. It contains a nice rhythm, due to a combination of a consistent sentence length, and repetition. I especially liked the last line, "and I don't think you would've caught me." However this brings me on to my grammatical criticism, which should be easy enough to fix if you have the time.
1-All letter "I"s should be capitalized. I know its a small thing, but it bugs me.
2- This isn't a mistake, but I feel a little more punctuation would help keep a steady flow to the story. Not too much, just a little.
I hope neither of these discourage you, because this is a really nice poem.

Hello there,

Magenta here to review your poem, Falling, which I must tell you is well-written. Good job! There were a few things, however, that I would like to point out to you. I would first like to suggest capitalizing your letters, like "I" so that it your poem has proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. At least one of your "I"s were capitalized which was probably changed by the autocorrect. It seemed distracting when reading because you started out with capitalizing them and then stopped halfway. I would also capitalize the first letter of each line because you use proper nouns and start new sentences. It would make the poem much better.

You wrote...

"baby, when I met you, I felt like I was floating--
up over the shiny tinsel rooftops
and oh-so-merry townsfolk."

I am not sure if I would use the word "tinsel", because I thought that it tinsel was a decorative material, not a material used for a rooftop. Did you mean tensile? Still, I don't see the reason for that line.

You wrote...

"baby i was fallin'
and maybe not in the good way."

I would suggest changing this a little bit. When you use "fallin'", it makes the poem less formal and it doesn't actually fit with the rest of the poem. It seems to casual for this type of poem and what it conveys. The next line,"and maybe not in the good way" is a bit confusing. I wasn't sure how you could fall in a good or bad way. Unless, did you mean falling in love? But the line still sounds strange when you write "maybe not". That kind of ruined the sentence. Please don't take the the wrong way, it just did not go with the flow of the poem. I would also use a word besides "baby" because it makes the poem more of a song. Other than that, I thought that you had a great poem. Terrific ending, I liked how wrote down going down. That added to the poem in a good way. Hope to have helped.;)

Capitalization is a personal preference. Many poets choose not to capitalize. But I fixed the parts that didn't match up.

I don't know why I wrote rooftops. It was supposed to be tree tops. I made other changes, so I hope it sounds better!

The word "baby" was used as a term of endearment. Normally, I'd use "darling" but a reader from another site told me that i should try this. Just to change it up. But I may change it back, just to please myself...

Thank you so much for reading and reviewing! It surely helped. Happy almost-New Years!!

Always glad to review! Happy Almost New Year!
