In Poetry

Mistaken
adjective
wrong in one's opinion
or judgment

Mistake
verb
to be wrong about

Mistake
noun
an action that is
misguided or wrong

I was mistaken about grad school,
expecting happiness and fulfillment
I found myself discouraged and exhausted,
inexact in my unfounded assumptions
and misguided in my hopeful naivete.

Misunderstanding myself and my status
within the department and the lab
could it be that I was wrong
         about my future?
                      my abilities?
                         my dreams?
Did I mistake myself for someone I'm not?

I certainly make mistakes on the regular,
my actions often end up being wrong,
my answers imprecise,
my thinking incorrect,
my research imperfect.

But my mistakes and failures
are nouns not verbs
and making mistakes
doesn't make me a mistake.

It means that I am learning
and have learned
and have grown
and that with confidence I can own my flaws
and become a student of mistakes.

Wow, I love this! It related relates to me so much... I'm fact I think this relates to a lot of people. I actually like how u defined the word mistake to give us a clear meaning of what this word can mean to us. Ending on a positive note really tied it all together as well. The questions placed makes me think often of questions I ask to myself because I'm at a point where I'm just not sure of anything... and then that line in the last stanza - "It means that I'm learning" - really tells a person to reconsider.

I couldn't really find any mistakes... you put in powerful statements and emphasis where it should be... so I'll just say that I really loved it!

Hey, there.

I just- this poem spoke to me. It really did. I relate to it on every level and it gave voice to some of my deepest fears. Just, wow. This was so powerful to me. It was unique and I feel like you really put words to a feeling that isn't mentioned all that often. Which is amazing, because it's something that I constantly think about myself. I love this. So much. I really do.

The positive note that you tied it together with- I needed that. I needed to read that.

I don't have any critique for you. Just that this poem is amazing and unique and beautiful and I love it.

I can't wait to read more of your art.

Daddy Long Legs are more closely related to crabs than spiders and somehow the idea of crablike creatures with spider legs that have escaped the entrappings of the primordial sea and now crawl over land and can walk up and down walls and ceilings creeps me more than I can adequately describe.
