Huh. What an interesting little read. The way I understood it was the author interpreting the cycles of life even through inanimate objects. The way the poetry ends with a cyclist pass on through is a nice way to end it because now we’re left wondering if they are just watching all that was described early on is what the cyclist saw, or not? The plot thickens!
Howdy hey! Gengar here to leave a review!
The way I interpreted this was that each stanza represented a different person in a cycle of depression (this is… probably wrong, but that’s just how I see it)
The first stanza is a play on the famous “Why did the chicken cross the road?” joke. I think this stanza is about attempting to break free of their depression. Their friends have just sat by, not knowing what to do to help them.
I believe the 2nd and 3rd stanzas are about people attempting to have meaning in life. In the 2nd stanza, the bottles fail to get any drink in them and feel that life is unfair. In the 3rd stanza, the incense may have had a purpose at one point but now feels meaningless.
The fourth stanza is about someone who feels as if they have no choice but to keep going, even though life is so bad for them.
Overall, great poem! My only critique is that I got a bit confused in the first stanza. It says that “the chickens saw their good ol’ fried friend” but then it says that the chicken was trying to escape the frying pan.
