Fishr Cool! I just started using it. Use my code G5KEX if it will help both of us? Which would be awesome too! :)

  • That time I composed a hand written letter and Ian McKellen signed off with, “ Love Ian,” at the end of his reply.

  • Also, I’m just over here obsessing.

  • (Warning, long rant):

A strong part of me really wants to compose a letter to LeVar Burton. He discovered he had a white Great Grandfather who was enlisted in the Confederacy. More so, his ancestor went on to marry a black woman that was in bondage herself. Needless to say, his reaction is debatable. The video can be seen on PBS’s Finding Your Roots, Season 10, Episode 3.

From my perspective, Mr. LeVar may or may not be informed about the sheer complexity of a topic which is often in my experience, shied away from. The polarized and uneducated assessment all whites are bad guys and blacks are the good guys just is not that straightforward. Far from it. Once more, to emphasize a loss of understanding, enslavement was not solely in the Southern British Colonies.

Moving forward to the 19th Century, one account describes the Choctaw people put blacks in bondage. After the Emancipation, this tribe did not release their captives right away. These groups of African-Americans in the Choctaw tribe also produced offspring and yet they would not offer membership even though a percentage were born on the tribes land.

And then on the flip side of the coin, evidence showed Canadians and African-Americans became adoptees and integrated into indigenous communities such as during the Deerfield Raid, Canadian-French captive woman were integrated into Mohawk communities in their Canadian territory. Not all woman, but a few.

African-Americans enslaved their own people. Native tribes enslaved their own too. There is no black and white and to reiterate, discussing slavery during the 18th and 19th Centuries is complex.

(For those who are in the know, I apologize). 🙂

These thoughts I feel a strong inclination to compose a letter to Mr. Burton to inform him there is much more than he may realize.

Ljungtroll I have very strong feelings in opposition to the opinions expressed here, but I have neither the energy nor the wish to engage in a long debate. Instead, please consider the difference between slavery in Africa and chattel slavery practiced in America. Consider why LeVar Burton might have reacted this way--marriage does not necessarily mean that his great-grandmother was in a place to readily consent to such a union. She may not have had a choice in the matter.
I'm a white kid who has no expertise in this field, but I've read books and listened to black folks talk about what it's like to hear opinions like this.
I see from a photo below that you're also white, so I suggest that you take extreme care when you say something like LeVar Burton doesn't understand the complexities of racial relations.
Read Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs and take an African American Studies course, please. I see why you would say these things, but I would argue your bid for nuance could be turned on you.

This is all I'll say on the matter since I'm in no place to educate someone on it, but that's how I feel.

Ley I agree with Ljungtroll on this one.

  • There is a lot of work to be done. There is a nasty habit of using the passive voice instead of an active voice in my writing.

  • Your review has arrived. Hope you find it helpful. Also, really sorry if I came across as super negative. I know I had a lot of suggestions and I'm just now getting back to reviewing so I dont know if I just sounded downright mean or what. 😭

Fishr You were not negative at all! Your opinions were dead on and I appreciate them very much.
