Is It Worth The Price?

Why are we fighting?

Why do we do it?

Not those petty little squabbles

Between friends or family

The blood feuds of olden times

The wars of recent history

We, with so many tears and broken hearts

The beckoning Khaki calls

The piper sets off his message

Send our loved ones off to war

To murder, to kill

And mostly, to inevitably be killed

Come fight for your motherland young ones

Come fight for your freedom

The gun shot-BAM-goes straight to the heart

Making us go defend it

And we follow

But why

Why do we fight for what we need?

Why is it so appealing?

Money can’t buy everything

But it buys our slaughter machines

It buys the lures,

The lure that catch the courageous eyes

Of every young man and now woman out there

Is it worth the price?

The fathers bear it bravely

The mothers turn their heads

Weeping for their lost children

For the baby long gone

Banners fly and snap in the wind

The breezes blow the ash

How many cities felt that blazing heat?

How many houses have gone aflame?

It's not appealing, but appalling!

We want to defend ourselves, yes

BUT- but the people we fight also strive to defend

Their mothers feel our pain

Their fathers bear that burden too

We kill those “wicked”, “yellowbellied” Japanese

We enslave those free labor vessels we called Negroes

We try to enslave other countries,

Trying to force the yoke upon the beast

But would we want that yoke upon us?

Do we want to be killed?

For every “enemy” you kill

You create a widow

You make fatherless child

You form motherless children

You take the life of an inexperienced young soldier

The consequence

It results in a mother,

Crying for her lost child

Her dead child

The one you killed

And then cheered for in victory

We fund the wars, we win the wars,

But the people who die?

We only remember them only as numbers

Statistics

Figures

In war, it turns into a kill or be killed world

So why are we fighting?

What are we fighting for?

Does anyone know?

Or do they just make excuses

Land

Money

Labor

That is all we care for

Is it worth the price?

Why is it our only defense

Peace is an option

We lack the empathy needed

No, it is not worth the price

Amazing piece of literature you've written here, the way you bend and use language to make such an impact is really fantastic. I have read very few poems on war that have been as good as this one. The only thing i would note down as what could be an improvement, is to get a proper rhyme scheme for your poem, as that tends to make it easier to read as you intended it to be read. Also one thing you should get into the habit of doing is putting punctuation on the end of your sentences as it simply makes it look nicer as well as easier to read. This poem in particular i feel like it might be a tad too long, but that’s not a major issue as its written well enough to be long. i also find it amazing how you were able to write a poem about war without glorifying it and still keep it good. Most poems about war glorify it which isn’t necessarily bad for the poem, since you can get some really good poems out of that but it isn’t the truth, it’s a beautiful lie. What you’ve written on the other hand is the horrible truth. the only other poem of the same theme I’ve read that I liked is Wilfred Owens Dulce et Decorum Est. which I’m assuming you’ve read and if you haven’t I definitely recommend it. :) Anyways, keep on writing awesome stuff :D

Nicely done! I appreciate the word choice and the wordplay. And of course it is extremely touching and heartfelt.

I would like to congratulate you on the poem itself. War is a difficult concept since it's very straightforward. Two bands fighting, both thinking that the other one is wrong. But the way you described the mother's and father's emotions, and how they only see other soldiers as numbers and statistics made the poem more truthful, enjoyable and engaging.

My only suggestion is that you review the poem's flow. Don't have the same ideas repeating over and over.

But the rest is fine. It's a brilliant piece of work!

This is very emotive, and you have discussed a relevant and past issue using powerful words to evoke questions. Questions reader's will ask themselves, wonder about why society has deemed it ok. Why we put money and time and lives into the barbaric actions? The closing of the poem is where you put it to rest and state it's NOT ok what's happening, however still posing the question 'Is it worth the price?'- continuing to make the reader think and consider their opinions. Very clever - and has an impact on the reader's thoughts. I enjoy your writing :)

Hello, Waffle here for a quick review/opinion.
I agree with you on many levels; no, it's not worth the price. We are born into a society that is fighting for equality, so why war? We know that we're all human, we know we're all as smart as the next old fart down the road but something tells us that we're better. We are not. We know love, we know life, and many poor souls know death. Why war? There is no logical answer. I mean, you can't explain something logical about something that isn't even logical to begin with. People say, "well do you want to die then?" but that simply is not the point. Get rid of war to begin with and just sort out our differences. High five, AutoPilot for this work of art, for something that makes sense for once.

I was weeping as much for him as her; we do sometimes pity creatures that have none of the feeling either for themselves or others.
