When I was younger
We were asked to draw a monster
So I drew a creature
With three eyes, four arms, and furry hair
My friend next to me
She drew an angel
I didn't understand
-
We were taught that monsters
Were just fictional stories
Used to spark fear
Into the hearts of little children
An angel just didn't match that description
-
If I was asked to draw a monster today
I would not draw what I did back then
I would draw anxiety, depression
and all the real monsters of the world
-
I would draw an angel
Because the worst of monsters
Disguise themselves as
Everything we could ever wish for
-
The real monsters are right in front of us
They hide in plain sight
Because nobody would expect a monster
To hide in the light

Great poem! It describes everything about fictional and real monsters. In real life, it seems like the monsters, are us. Its because sometimes were hostile and mean to other people and animals. Plus other real life monsters could be negative feelings. Either way, their are monsters everywhere and anywhere right now. This poem was realy inspireing. Just be sure to seperate sentances with periods.
I appreciate your understanding of my piece! Thank you!
About the periods: It's a stylistic choice. I feel the poem would be more muddled and wouldn't flow as nicely if I added the periods and punctuation and such.
Thank you for the review!
Loving how simply the whole concept was expressed right there!
The transition between small-lined stanzas to longer-lined verses was a pretty clever choice almost representing the transition from raw naivete to, well, a wiser state of innocence. Pretty much sums up youth entirely. The fact that no complex or 'difficult' words are used absolutely keeps the 'innocent' effect going.
Hits bull's eye if you ask me.
Thank you so much! That means a lot! I am very proud of this poem, and to see it received well is a dream come true.
AHH. Thank you.
You're too kind!
This is a good, creative piece of writing!!
I really liked it, and I have quite some things to say about it. I see there is no punctuation, and I agree with your choice of excluding that. Poetry doesn't have to have punctuation. It's up to the poet. Your poem is clever and unique- so you shouldn't have to change it just because someone else wants periods and commas in it.
I enjoyed reading your writing very much, and I'll check out some of your other works. This is a great poem and I hope others can read it and process all that's in it.
The first four lines are believable to pretty much anyone. It can happen in real life. I like how the childish theme is set up in the beginning, but then goes on to maturity and smart thinking. The mood has escalated with good motivation.
It sounds like "your friend" was pretty smart. And I would say she's right. Angels can be monsters inside. The whole second stanza is also right in my opinion. It's true, and it's happened to me. Many others as well. Little kids believe a lot of things, and monsters are in storybooks now. But yes, I do agree that there are monsters, hidden inside humans. And I mean for that to sound different. Humans can be vicious and evil- I'm talking about that kind of "monster".
Anxiety, depression, disease, loneliness, rejection- you could never name it all. Because that is real. And monsters aren't. This poem is very smart- of course like you, since you're the one that wrote it.
"I would draw an angel
Because the worst of monsters
Disguise themselves as
Everything we could ever wish for"
That part got me thinking. Money can make people unhappy. Sometimes gifts can be too. Other people can be monsters to someone. There can always be something negative hidden in something positive. Bad things can hide in plain sight, and I agree with you.
This poem is dark, deep, sort of suspenseful, and also meaningful. Readers may stop and think hard about some of the lines you have going here. It's a wonderful line, and I don't have any complaints, no did I find any flaws.
Congratulations! You have a satisfied reader/poet!
