After the Psychic Circle had come to a decision, Jake dropped Alexia off at her house. It was just them in the car, and both thought it best if they remained quiet. Alexia was still angry at him for using his Charm on her, and Jake was still adamant that he did the right thing. So they rode in silence, until Jake braked outside her house. She swiftly got out with a brief thank you, and went to her front door without turning back. She heard Jake drive off.
Using her spare key, Alexia entered through the front door, and saw the light in Ben’s study was on. The rest of the house was in darkness. Alexia wearily strode down the corridor, exhausted, sombre after making and losing a friend in one day. Her mind went over and over what she had experienced in Nikki’s emotions. Her father... was a monster. Alexia now understood why Nikki wanted to punish him so badly...
Ben heard her enter and he rolled his chair out into the corridor. He was in his old robe, and he gazed bleary-eyed and emotionless at her. “Oh good, I’m not being robbed today.” He murmured. “And you’re alive. Got to be grateful for the simple things I suppose. Can’t raise my standards too high, so I won’t bother saying anything about curfews or-” he stopped, from the pure shock of Alexia’s abrupt and wholehearted embrace. His work chair rolled back a little, and he let it, blinking a few times as Alexia squeezed him as hard as she could with both arms.
“Alex...” he didn’t know what to say, especially now that she was quietly sobbing into his shoulder. He hesitated for a moment, and then decided that these occasions usually called for reciprocation. He brought his arms around her, patting her back gently.
Alexia broke off her sob, and pulled back from the embrace so that she could face him. “Thank you, Ben. Thank you so, so much, and I’m so sorry ok? I’ve been a numbskull, and I know you’re trying hard, and I know you miss mum too. I- I just don’t know how to deal with it,” she sniffed hard “I don’t know how to deal with my stuff, and I take it out on you. All the time! And I’m sorry.” She lowered her head and looked up at him, letting the tears flow freely.
Ben tilted his head, deeply sympathetic of her miserable frame. “Oh, Alexia...” he pulled out a handkerchief and handed it to her, and let her wipe her cheeks with it. “Are you ok? Well, you’re clearly not but,” he took a deep breath, “What’s the matter? Did something happen today?”
Alexia gazed at Ben through blurry eyes and opened her mouth, but no words found their way out. What happened was that she had woken up to the fact that fathers can be a lot worse than the clueless, endlessly demanding Ben. A lot worse...
“Please, I just need to sleep now. I’m ok – I’ll be ok.” Alexia felt her body already giving in to the fatigue. Ben nodded and led her to her room, letting her get straight into bed without changing, and tucking the covers around her shoulders. She whispered another thank you, and when he left, she let more tears of gratitude roll onto the pillow and fell asleep before they were soaked into it.
***
The next morning, Alexia woke up early but didn’t get out of bed. It was a Saturday, and she could use the spare time to think, regroup and plan. Firstly, she thought of what Naomi had told them about what she had learnt from reading Viper’s thoughts. Naomi had given them a strong disclaimer once again that she could only pick up surface thoughts, before telling them that Viper had been thinking about what his mother’s intention was for Nikki.
While Viper himself hadn’t been aware of the specifics, Naomi could piece together what he knew about a crystal, or rather a Crystal which Nikki was somehow connected to. His mother, Senra, needed Nikki for some reason, to draw mystic and ancient psychic power from this Crystal. Viper didn’t know exactly how Senra would achieve this, which suggested that she didn’t tell him everything... or Senra herself hadn’t figured it out.
Alexia finally got out of bed, and headed to the kitchen, taking out the frying pan. She broke two eggs into the pan at the same time, scrambling them quickly and adding the milk and salt. Ben came into the kitchen, raised his eyebrows and sat down at the kitchen table. Alexia glanced at him and ignored his surprised expression as she dished out his food and set it down in front of him.
She sat down with her own plate and gave him a small smile. He seemed to study her for a moment and smiled back cautiously. As he started to eat, she could feel him struggling to find words to say.
“So... thank you for breakfast,” he said.
“Don’t mention it,” she said. “ever.”
He chuckled and continued. “Perhaps we can catch up on your life today. It is just you and I after all. We might as well get along, right?” his tone had a slightly desperate edge.
Alexia looked at him, as if for the first time since her mother had left. His bristle was growing out almost long enough to call it a beard. The lines on his face were deeper than she remembered, and his brow always had slight worry lines. “Yeah, that sounds cool.” She said, smiling politely to mask the observations she had been making. She couldn’t hide the frown that settled in shortly afterwards.
Ben watched her for a moment and let out a deep sigh. “Well, we can start by addressing the elephant in the room.” As Alexia looked up wide-eyed, he continued. “I miss your mother. I know you do too.”
“Ben, I-” she said shaking her head, but he interrupted.
“She can’t call, that isn’t her fault. She told me to tell you that she is ok though, and she’ll return as soon as-”
“Wait,” Alexia sucked in air through her nose, filling her lungs, “What? Ben, when did you talk to my mother?” she was panicked, and felt anger bubbling up at the same time.
“She called when you were out last night.” He seemed taken aback by Alexia’s reaction. He was saying all this as if it wasn’t a big deal that she had missed possibly the only chance to talk to her mother since she left three months ago. He carried on, oblivious to her turmoil. “To be honest, I don’t think she was thrilled you were out that late, but she gets it.”
“I-“ Alexia found that she couldn’t stop the tears from streaming down. “I wanted to talk to her all this time, and you didn’t even... didn’t even...” What? She thought to herself. What was Ben meant to do? It was her own fault for not being home when the call came.
“Alexia dear,” Ben said looking as sympathetic as he could muster. “She’ll call again, I’m sure of it.”
“I don’t want her to call, I want her to come home.” She pushed her half eaten eggs around on her plate, and knew she wasn’t going to finish them. She heard Ben make a sound like he wanted to say something but no words came out.
He sighed deeply, and instead said in a defeated tone, “So how is school?”
Alexia gave him one word answers for the rest of breakfast time, until he gave up on making conversation at all. So much for getting along. Ben insisted on cleaning up the dishes, and Alexia left him to it, returning to her room to hold her pillow and cry without holding back.
When she could cry no more, she forced herself to think of the Crystal. If the Psychic Circle had any chance of getting Nikki back from the Angel Club, they had to understand where it was from, and what it could do.
She sat up abruptly, struck by an idea. She went to her desk, switching on her desktop computer. If there was information about any psychic elements, the Institute for Mind Research would be the first place to go. Alexia did a quick online search to find out if they were still operational. Sure enough, they were, but had relocated from Orino Varsity, the local university, to Violet Labs, which was located on the outskirts of the city. As soon as she got this information, she hurried to get showered and ready to go.
She wore a floral top, fitted jeans and a pair of cute suede boots. As she was putting on the second boot, Ben knocked lightly on her door.
“Uh huh,” she said to allow him in as she finished lacing up the boots and putting a few things in her sling bag.
“Alexia, I feel the need to apologise-“
She picked up a cap and put it on. “No need. It was my fault Ben.”
Ben put two and two together as he watched her. “You’re leaving...”
“Yeah, I gotta do a couple things out.”
“Out? Where?”
Alexia paused a moment. “Just... out. I will stay safe and be home on time today, but I really need to go.”
“So are we just not going to talk about anything?” Ben asked in a matter-of-fact tone. He didn’t raise his voice at all, which made his point especially hard to oppose, and hit her guilt buttons the hardest.
She bit her lip and forced herself to face him. “We’ll talk when I get back, I promise.” He was hard to read. He simply looked at her, shrugged, and left the room.
Alexia exhaled, only then aware that she had been holding her breath. She felt bad about leaving their issues unresolved, and reaffirmed to herself that she would definitely follow through on her promise to get back to it when she returned. That resolve gave her enough motivation to head boldly out the door on her mission.
She was striding out so purposefully, that she nearly walked right past Graham as he was approaching the house.
“Wow, Red. You’re a million miles away. I think you’ve forgotten me.” His arms were crossed, and he sounded pissed. Great.

Hi! Cricket here for a review!
Well it seems Traunt and ironnovelist got here before me, but nevertheless I shall do my best to get in a helpful review for you. And I think in order to do so, I'm going to have dig deep into my reviewing skills for that. So let us see how this works out! *has never dug super deep before, except with your works*
Well the main thing about this chapter that I just loved, was that Alexia and Ben are warming up to each and acting like father and daughter. I mean, he's her step-dad and there's bound to be some tension but sooner or later... they're going to warm up to each other. Obviously though, they weren't exactly getting along in the last part, but still... it was an improvement! This was precisely what I was hoping for, and I'm glad you decided to do it this way. One thing that I do think you could change, is in the second paragraph--
Here she is thinking about how bad Nikki's father and how she understands why she wants to punish him, but I got the feeling that something was missing. After thinking about it for a few minutes, and trying to figure out what my reactions and thoughts would be in such a situation, I cam up with it. She wasn't comparing Ben to Nikki's father, at all. I would think, that she would be comparing both and then understanding how maybe she has it a bit better than she had previously thought. I mean, I was like, "Gosh girl! Don't you know how good you have it?" It's of course up to you, so this is just my opinion on that. I did see that you did have something like what I just mentioned later on, but I almost thought that you could have something like that as well here. It might help build up their relationship in our minds a bit more. If you get what I mean. But that's up to you, as this is my opinion on it.
Now I also saw that you read that article on punctuation in dialogue. xD Sorry, if that seems like stalking... but I did see your like for it.
Here you have two ellipsis in a row. Normally I wouldn't be talking about these little dots, as I looove using them myself, but the second one was rather out of place. I'd suggest just going for a complete stop on that second one, but leaving it the same with the first one.
Typo
*cough* Something is kinda missing here, that I couldn't resist mentioning.
Typo
Another typo that--well, I just had to bring up. Cause you know... I'm digging soo deep that I can hardly find anything to nitpick.
I don't know if you personally, treat the thought process as you do your dialogue, but it's supposed to be she and not She. Treat your thought process like you would dialogue.
*smirks* This is like, sooo meeee. Every time something goes wrong, I always just want to curl up and cry into something. Her emotions are just spot on for a girl. xD
Comma after Ben, I think.
Okay, I'm done with the nitpicks now, as SOMEBODY stole all of them, but I just want to say one thing... GRAHAM. He's back! *hugs ether* Omigosh, I had almost forgot about him, and then I see him... and I'm like, "yes!"
Graham, is just going to be amazing right now. I mean, Alexia is most likely not going to like what he has to say right now, but still. I'm expecting some pretty big stuff from the next chapter, which I need to review still!
Keep writing!
~Cricket
Hi Cricket, welcome welcome!
Hope it's not too much like homework though!
I will make it my personal challenge to try to catch them before you do ;-P
I think I'll take it as a compliment that you dig deep for my work hehe...
You're right about the comparison Alexia should make between her stepdad and Nikki's real father. I think I wasn't focussed when I was writing about it, because I could have sworn I had planned to write a lot more about her comparing thoughts. That was a complete error, I will try and make it clearer. After all, that was the reason she was so emotional and willing to reconcile (at first lol) because of her realisation that she really didn't have a bad deal with Ben.
Addicted to ellipses, sorry hehe. I slip them in when I'm just chatting online all the time. I'll consciously reign them in though.
Thanks for the tips on dialogue! I think there was a gap in my high school English training about the proper way to write it. It may take me awhile to kick all of my bad habits out, so thank you for bearing with me. You're not nagging at all! Think of it as helping guide someone who is blind to dialogue mistakes
With Alexia crying into a pillow, I'm a girl too, so I get it! And I also get how everything feels so much better when the tears are out.
Yes, Graham is back, and thoroughly unimpressed with Alexia being too busy to pay attention to him hehe. There's going to be a fight for sure. Not yet in the next chapter, but I hope that you'll enjoy it anyway!
Thanks a ton, can't wait for your upcoming reviews!
XOXO
Ether
hey there!
sorry about that.
If I'm not mistaken, I haven't read/reviewed any other chapters in this series...so today's review will probably be mostly nitpicks.
I kind of like how you ended with this harsh, abrupt statement. It made me chuckle. I like the sense of voice you're giving your characters.
I also like the way you separate portions with ***. That is quite nice, especially in such a long piece.
Convention/grammar/spelling/thingies:
quote-- She swiftly got out with a brief thank you, and went to her front door without turning back.
maybe you'd want to add single 's around thank you: 'thank you': just to add a little separation around that statement. Does that make sense? It just might look better or make more sense when reading it.
quote-- “Oh good, I’m not being robbed today.” He murmured.
With this speaker tag, you definitely want to write it as: "Oh good, I'm not being robbed today," he murmured.
quote-- She told me to tell you that she is ok though
when writing 'ok' you want to write it either as "OK" or "okay". I usually suggest the latter.
quote-- Well, you’re clearly not but,” he took a deep breath, “What’s the matter?
When breaking a sentence with a speaker tag, keep the letter of the next word in quotes lowercase. I also suggest putting a comma before 'but'. "Well, you're clearly not, but," he took a deep breath, "what's the matter?"
quote--Alexia sucked in air through her nose,
When I hear 'sucked' I usually think of breathing in through the throat/mouth. Maybe consider placing a different word here? For example, "inhaled", "sniffed", "took in", "breathed". Use powerful adverbs as needed.
That's all the things that really stuck out to me.
Good job overall and keep it up!
Keep writing!
~iron.n
Hello, m'dear.
I shall be first to review! So, I'm going to try to help with the plot. I say "try" because I end up waffling on about how amazing this story is and how much I love the characters and... Yeah. I just did it again. Hee hee. But, seriously. I will try my best to overcome these complimentary boundaries. It is my goal.
But first... Nitpicks!
I feel as if it should say "so they rode in silence, up until Jake braked outside her house". I'm not sure if it was an effect you were trying to get, but as I read this, I felt as if it jerked yo the next part after the comma. Personally, I didn't think the interruption of the flow was useful, but others may think it was clever (which I do think, I'm just not one for breaking the flow of a sentence). So, please do think about putting "up until" to carry on with that lovely flow you've got going on.
Umm... Where's his study? To the left of her? To the right? Straight ahead? I couldn't totally picture thus scene. My mind was searching for thus room, but it was moving all around because I couldn't place it any where. Perhaps you have mentioned where Ben's study is, but this is chapter 17, and with a memory like mine... Well, there's no way I can remember where his study is. Please do point it out for us simpletons. Especially for me. Honestly, I wish I could remember things easily. But if you haven't mentioned it in previous chapters, all the more so to place it for us.
I'm sorry. But this made me laugh. This is soooo my dad. Except his study is just a desk and a laptop and a pile of papers at the end of our hallway (below the stairs). And when he hears something going off in the living room, he'll swivel his chair towards the commotion and pop his head around the door. It is quite a sight to see. Ben actually reminds me a lot of my dad. Which is a good thing, because it means your characters are realistic and play a part which us almost life like. Great job.
Umm... Today? This sentence made me feel as if Ben was saying, "Oh thank goodness. I'm not being robbed for once." if you took out the "today" I think it would run a bit smoother. I hope you understood what I meant
Awwwwww. I wanted yo cry when I read this. Great, great character development. I love to see these boundaries and blockades being removed and relationships improving (sometimes other way round). Because it reflects of real life. We don't stay on the same level all the time - we either go down one or go up one, improving or not. A relationship either gets stronger, or gets worse. I want to commend you for this beautiful moment. I will love to see more like this!
This needs to be: "Thank you, Ben. Thank you so, so much, and I’m so sorry, ok?" It explains why here: Why put a comma before "ok"?
If you think about it, the pillow is only a centimeter or two away, and tears roll pretty fast. So technically, the tears would hit the pillow and soak in before Alexia could shut her eyes and fall to sleep. So I would cut out "before they were soaked into it". But it is up to you. Personally, I wouldn't think it could be possible. But we truly don't know the extent of Alexia's fatigue. Anyway... It is up to you
So... This was all in Viper's surface thoughts? I thought it was a bit unclear to whether you were saying that Viper had thought all that or Naomi had gathered bits and pieces, like words, perhaps "Crystal", "Senra", I don't know. I just thought you needed to fine line that a bit and explain more. It was unclear to me what Naomi had taken from Viper.
I have never heard anyone say "you and I" before. Maybe it's because most people around me are slang (I try not to clip my words, do not fear). But depending on where you are, you may may "you and I". But mostly likely, so.e one will say "you and me". Bur, again, it is up to you. My word is only a suggestion.
I know Alexia is at a fairly young age, late teens, but would she sincerely know what this means? Sure, she's not dumb, but is it is her nature to use such terms? If you say there is an elephant in the room, you mean that there is an obvious problem or difficult situation that people do not want to talk about - so would Alexia know what Ben meant by that? I wouldn't catch on straight away, as the young mind thinks straight to the obvious. A literal elephant in the room. But wait - there isn't a literal elephant in the room, so what does Ben mean? Ce? That's what many would think. (Not me though. Hahaha.)
Another instance where the comma is needed. On this website, it will tell you when a comma is needed for nicknames and such: Read Rule 5.
Uh-oh. This should be "put two and two", not "too"
Great just needs to be in italics to show Alexia is thinking it. Ooo. Graham is back! And this is sooo going to cause tension and disrupt Alexia's plan for the day. A perfect ending may I say.
Okay. Through out the nitpicks I commented on plot xD so that's my work done. No more to say for this piece of perfection. Well done for another awesome chapter!
Yours sincerely,
Traunt
Hi Traunt!
Thank you for your review, and your compliments too! I will try address each point you made.
I don't mind changing it to "up until". There are some sentences which I write merely as information, and I don't particularly care what order the words themselves are in, as long as the reader understands the facts. This sentence is one of them.
You always pick up my attempts at cutting corners hehe - don't worry, that's a good thing, thank you! Architecture is a problem in this story if I were to self critique. I haven't quite gotten the spacing and logistics solid in my mind, and apparently it shows in the text. I have noted this though, and will do research on it once I get my first draft down. I believe I imagined Ben's study was located on the left though.
Heehee! Glad you liked it
Gotcha. I agree with your edits
Another Traunt win, yay! Thanks! I know I'm doing something right when my reader feels a strong emotion. Perhaps I'll experiment with making the reader angry/disappointed/sad next time lol.
Your logic is undeniable.
I was worried it might be a bit unconvincing to say that Viper had all of this in the front of his mind... I'll rethink this bit, as well as the limitations of Naomi's power.
How. Embarrassing. :-O
Noted.
Yes, Graham is back! Ready to complicate things hehe. I wrote his reaction by imagining how mad he'd be at me for keeping him in the background for so many chapters hehe. Although he does go missing again for the next chapter unfortunately, as the spotlight turns back to Viper and Nikki... that's your teaser trailer
I seriously love your replies <3 they make my day. After all that effort with the review, I fell as if it was most definitely worth it after you reply -^^-
So with the sentences.... I'm very picky. It is my main focus, so that's why I'm such an annoying, little nitpicker xDD
Don't worry! Compared to me, you are, like, the planning master. I wouldn't have even thought about which side his study was on when writing it.
Yesh. You definitely struck a chord with me today. To say this is written in third person, it is awfully emotive. Serious talent.
xD yeah. Hopefully Ben doesn't get robbed everyday.
Hee hee. I feel smart when you say I have good logic!
Yay for Graham! But... YAY! VIPER! x) thanks for that. I cannot wait for the next :3
Hey, its only fair! Detailed reviews deserve detailed replies

Funny enough, I have always had an easier time at third person, first is the weird one for me to write in. Maybe its because all my favourite stories were written in third, or perhaps first is too real for me. I originally got into reading to escape, live another person's life for a time, and for some reason, third person helped with that. I think...
Simple answer for why you felt smart - you are smart!
I've actually just finished writing the next chapter, but lemme wait for more reviews on this one before posting... also I need time to read through and comb through some of the silly nitpicks myself. After the too/two fiasco, I can't bear to risk another embarrassment
Hee hee. Well, you give me awesome reviews, so that's partly it! ^-^

Wow. I always found it easier in first. I've had quote a journey with writing though. I used to write in third person and about realistic things. Now I write first and about science fiction. And I have read both third and first and always prefered first - although I loved a trilogy called Uglies which was in third (and crazily enough, a man writing about a girl).
xD You're too kind!
Yes, I will be reviewing soooon! Eek!
