The Psychic Circle: Chapter 16

Senra sat in the centre of the opening in the forest, away from the noise of humanity. Away from the collective angst, frustration and desperation that made up the pulse of the city’s heartbeat.

Here amongst the unpruned plants and the untamed animals, she could connect with the One Mind. It was the very consciousness of the Earth which she sought now. The girl Nikki Brown got away, but my Craig will bring her back soon, she thought, not worried at all. What she wanted to know was the location of the Crystal. It was time to turn legend into facts.

If she wasn’t careful, her impatience was going to get the better of her. She often found that communing with the One Mind was like trying to find the eye of a blue whale, to get it to notice her. It was a vast consciousness, made up of every thought, be it human, animal, plant, soil and stone, and there was no index to the flow.

Senra’s own mind interpreted the experience as a weightless drifting journey over a broad river which was suspended nowhere, and existed everywhere. It was not a river of water, but of images of people, mountains, animals and plants, past and present, all fading into each other so that there was no clear boundary between were one ended and the other began. Flowing, forever moving, and forever adding their consciousness to the One Mind.

On a previous session with the One Mind, she had shared the consciousness of a mountain and saw it – no, felt it – change from a plain to a peak, in a time span that simultaneously felt like a microsecond and a billion years. She had become obsessed with clocks for a week afterwards. Her internal sense of time had been completely thrown off, because mountains didn’t think in seconds, they thought one thousand five hundred years at a time. This time, she focused on maintaining her sense of individuality as she drifted on, seeking, watching, feeling...

She now saw something in the Mind River below. It was faint, the memory of a memory. But it was massive... an amorphous shape which came from somewhere else entered the Mind River to become a part of the One Mind. As it did, every other thing in the One Mind shifted momentarily in the direction opposite to its normal flow. Then, after some random motion, the Mind River flowed in its normal direction again.

But something was different about it. The flow was either slightly slower or slightly faster than how she remembered it to be before the mass entered it. The faintness of the large shape, which had changed the One Mind in such a subtle yet profound way, meant that it was a distant memory. Could it be the meteorite crash where the Crystal was said to be found?

Senra dove into the place where the shape had joined the One Mind. She saw it descending and had to pass her consciousness through many others to reach it. Tree memories, soil, rock, and some large prehistoric reptiles – she struggled to keep her mind from sharing consciousness with them as she kept descending. But the shape she hoped was the meteorite was fading too fast. Senra was frantic, and went ever deeper, knowing that she was nearing the Ancient Depths.

She lost sight of the shape. Looking down, she could see a darker, thicker River beneath the one on top. No individual shapes could be made out from the tar-like substance... for Senra, going that deep meant losing her personal consciousness forever. She accepted defeat and allowed herself to ascend slowly, still seeking the meteor shape. It was at that moment that her concentration lapsed, and she unwittingly melded her consciousness with and ancient sycamore tree on her way to the surface of the One Mind. She gasped, but was lost in tree-mind for an hour.

When she finally surfaced from the One Mind into her own body, Senra took several minutes to remember how to blink, move her muscles, and to get rid of the ghost limb feeling of having more fingers and toes and leaves than she actually had. How annoying.

She slowly rose from the ground, dusting herself off and looked up to face a bear. She blinked and it growled. Calmly, she channelled the consciousness of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, and let out an even deeper, primal growl. She had never seen a bear’s widen with horrific surprise, but it was more amusing than she could have imagined. It turned and ran away on all fours.

She strolled back to the city, as her mind went over what she had experienced (minus her life as a tree). She had been close to the truth she sought, she was sure of it. She kicked a branch out of her way, irritated to no end.

Patience... after one hundred and fifteen years she had run out of patience. Power was the virtue she wanted. Patience could go to hell.

***

Alexia was Nikki.

The Nikki, who was also Alexia, was crouched in a corner of the room she (they) knew, the room where Mr Brown had left her, whimpering ,sobbing until her throat was sore, clawing at herself, at her arms and neck, tugging at her torn dress.

No, no, no, no, no, no. No. He had broken her with what he had done to her, broken that last piece of her which she had tried to keep away from him, the piece that reminded her that she was a person after all. Now she was...

Nothing.

She wanted to be nothing, now. She wanted to be anything but what he had made her. She was Pain. Nikki tied two torn ends of her dress together, but it wasn’t going to be the same again, ever.

Her hands shook as her whimper turned into a long screaming wail and she slid down on the wood tiled floor. Dust on the floor shifted away from her. On the shelving that was fixed at hip level around half of the room, were the paper maché angels which she loved to make. They gently vibrated on the spot, then stilled.

Her wails subsided into whimpers again, when her body was too dehydrated and tired to produce any more tears. She lay still on the floor, miserable and empty.

Maybe an hour of restless stillness passed, maybe two, when the sound of the front door opening made her whole body flinch. She sat up and stared at the door of her room in utter terror.

He was back. Oh dear God. Not again. She couldn’t survive it. She couldn’t-

“-lexia!” shouted a voice that cut through the vision, coming from another time and space. Everything dissolved, and the consciousness which was Nikki’s and also Alexia’s split, and Alexia once again felt her sense of individuality. But not completely... the feelings, the pain, still lingered in her consciousness like a memory she had almost forgotten.

She was gasping, and as awareness of her own body began to return, she realised she was crouched over with her hand on her belly. She gazed up and her eyes focussed on Naomi’s lamenting face. Alexia dropped to her knees on the basement floor, her right hand finding the ground to stop her collapsing completely. She swayed and Naomi came closer to support her, but she pushed her aside and scrambled across the room to a stack of paint tins, grabbed an empty one, and threw up.

When Alexia finished, she covered the tin with a spare lid, and sat on the ground steadying her breathing. She slowly looked up at the other girls. Naomi was studying her carefully, with a caution that was also concern. Nikki was standing with her arms limp at her side, still as a silhouette, her head down.

The experience had warped Alexia’s brain... and Nikki had been holding back when she transferred her emotions. That was a mere fraction of the anguish she had to live through.

Naomi looked from Alexia to Nikki, fidgeting restlessly, starting to speak a couple of times, stopping as she lost the words again, until finally “What happened?” she urged in a strained whisper.

Alexia looked at Naomi, her mouth open, but her voice was muted by the memory of the harrowing emotions she had shared with Nikki.

Was it her place to tell Naomi that Nikki had been raped and abused by her own father? Nikki herself had not moved, and looked as if she could stand there like that forever.

“What if I read you?” Naomi said, walking up to Alexia. Naomi had deduced that she wasn’t going to get much talking from either of them, so tapping the source was the next best thing. Alexia shook herself out of her stunned demeanour, and got up, nearly stumbling in her haste.

“No! Naomi, please don’t...” Alexia moaned, backing away. “It’s... bad. Every bit as bad as Nikki said, and worse.” Alexia thought she felt bile rising again, but it was a false alarm.

Nikki spoke. “I feel it every day. The Pain.” Her lips barely moved as she spoke, and the swinging bulb cast shrinking and stretching shadows in perpetual motion. “I need the Pain to go away.” It was a stated fact. “It won’t go away, until he is gone.”

Alexia had never seen Noami at such a loss of what to do. It was like her compass that pointed her to doing the right thing was spinning without a break.

She decided to outsource the decision. “Let’s go up, we need to discuss this with the others.” Naomi beckoned them both to the stairs. Alexia went to throw the paint can she was still holding into the bin, and then went to Nikki, who was crying silently. Alex took off her jacket and put it around Nikki’s shoulders, using a gentle nudge to encourage her to walk with her. They ascended the steps in silence, Alexia and Nikki first side by side, taking each step one at a time, and Naomi following behind them.

The scene that lay before them in the lounge both confused and shocked Alexia.

Straight ahead there was a man she didn’t know sitting on the green armchair, which was no longer facing the television like the others, but had been swivelled to face the door of the basement. He had been waiting for them. His elbow was casually resting on the arm, and his fingers were held in a strange position, fingers apart, with his wrist casually rotating back and forth.

When Alexia took in more of the room, she saw Jake, Casey, and Hanson, in the kitchen, each of them with their hands raised up in the universal sign of surrender...

... each of them with a kitchen knife hovering half an arm’s length in front of their faces.

In the same moment that Alexia saw this, Naomi screamed. Alexia’s eyes narrowed and she turned back to the stranger, who was smiling. He stood up and she noticed his odd spiky hair, dyed pure white with a strip of black running down the centre.

“Hello again, Nikki.” he said in a British accent, as he walked towards them.

Hiya! Yes I am here finally!

I'm sorry for being so terribly late. I feel absolutely awful for not reviewing any soon, but you know how life is. Rushed, restricted and plain unfair :P But no excuses, I'm a positively sorry. Do forgive me.

Oh, how I have missed reviewing. I especially missed reviewing this work of art! I was so desperate to review this that I was in a terrible grump. You're story is by far one of the best I have ever read. I sincerely love it with all my heart and soul. It is right up my street (by which I mean, it is my type of thing. British quirk indeed). Anyway... To the nitpicks!

This is more of a suggestion than a nitpick... But all the same. I was just thinking, to show the contrast, (the word in bold) "and" could be "yet" or "but", though I like "yet" more. I like the idea of this being, this essence or entity, this... "thing". It reminds me of Star Wars (which I was watching over the weekend), obviously I'm not saying, 'Ether, you've copied.' because that would be an utter lie. I like that feeling that something is there, but it is invisible, but at work - like the wind or gravity. It is something natural. I seriously love your world <3
"Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship." ~ Yoda
I'm a saddo, right? :D

On a previous session with the One Mind, she had shared the consciousness of a mountain and saw it – no, felt it – change from a plain to a peak, in a time span that simultaneously felt like a microsecond and a billion years.

I think the flow is disrupted here. You put "from a plain to a peak", but not "a microsecond to a billion years". I would consider adjusting that.

Her internal sense of time had been completely thrown off, because mountains didn’t think in seconds, they thought one thousand five hundred years at a time. This time, she focused on maintaining her sense of individuality as she drifted on, seeking, watching, feeling...

Hmmm... I'm not to sure about the first sentence, the "they thought one thousand five hundred years at time" didn't make sense because mountains don't think. You were personifying the mountains in a way in which they cannot be personified. Has this got to do with the One Mind? Can mountains really think?
The second sentences got me thinking... The One Mind is called what it is called for a reason. It is as one, everything is connected. But how could Senra keep to her individuality? I know she is incredibly powerful, but surely no one (the exception of dear Nikki) could possible refrain from keeping themselves separate from this vast entity. Right? This also leads me onto the question of... Is Nikki connected to the One Mind more so that Senra? It must be exceptionally hard for someone to focus in on this being, this "force", and seeing as lovely Nikki is awesome and extensively powerful, can she somehow muster up the strength to be as one with the One Mind as does Senra?

Tree memories, soil, rock, and some large prehistoric reptiles – she struggled to keep her mind from sharing consciousness with them as she kept descending.

The first part of this sentence is a little jumbled and unclear. I get that you are saying what the trees have been through, but is that what you are saying for the soil, rocks, and reptiles? If so, why not put: Tree, soil, rock, and some large prehistoric reptiles' memories - she struggled to keep her mind from sharing consciousness with them as she kept descending.

No individual shapes could be made out from the tar-like substance... for Senra, going that deep meant losing her personal consciousness forever.

I know this sounds very childish... But why? Couldn't she go that deep because she hadn't practised enough? Was the force of the One Mind too strong for her to delve that deep? There was a perfect opportunity to explain in a little more depth the power and how it works. Remember, we love to know all the nitty gritty details.

It was at that moment that her concentration lapsed, and she unwittingly melded her consciousness with and ancient sycamore tree on her way to the surface of the One Mind.

I can't believe ThereseCricket didn't spot this one :P hee hee. This should be "an".

When she finally surfaced from the One Mind into her own body, Senra took several minutes to remember how to blink, move her muscles, and to get rid of the ghost limb feeling of having more fingers and toes and leaves than she actually had. How annoying.

I think you just need to split this up a little bit. Sometimes you read sentences and think, "Blimey, that was long". I think you do well not to have so many sentences like that in because I know many struggle with that. Sometimes people have sentences that are like paragraphs! But you, like I said, do very well not to do that.
Maybe put it like this: When she finally surfaced from the One Mind into her own body, Senra took several minutes to remember how to blink and her muscles. That and to get rid of the ghost limb feeling of having more fingers and toes and leaves than she actually had. How annoying.

The Nikki, who was also Alexia, was crouched in a corner of the room she (they) knew, the room where Mr Brown had left her, whimpering ,sobbing until her throat was sore, clawing at herself, at her arms and neck, tugging at her torn dress.

There are eight commas in this sentence. That's quite a lot. I suggest breaking things down, using more connectives (but, yet, and; ect). Commas are pauses, and with so many pauses in this sentences, it kind-of disrupts the flow of your piece. Just try to rephrase this so it is nice and smooth. This was quite interesting to read though ;)

No, no, no, no, no, no. No. He had broken her with what he had done to her, broken that last piece of her which she had tried to keep away from him, the piece that reminded her that she was a person after all.

There is a little bit of redundancy in this. Try using different words than "piece" and "broken". It is an easy thing we slip into, so don't worry about it. Everyone does it. That is why me and other reviewers are here - to point out these little scoundrels :D

Everything dissolved, and the consciousness which was Nikki’s and also Alexia’s split, and Alexia once again felt her sense of individuality. But not completely... the feelings, the pain, still lingered in her consciousness like a memory she had almost forgotten.

I think the first sentence could be laid out a little more evenly. Perhaps you could possibly put: Everything dissolved, and the consciousness which was Nikki’s and also Alexia’s split. Although Alexia once again felt her sense of individuality. But not completely... the feelings, the pain, still lingered in her consciousness like a memory she had almost forgotten.

Naomi looked from Alexia to Nikki, fidgeting restlessly, starting to speak a couple of times, stopping as she lost the words again, until finally “What happened?” she urged in a strained whisper.

This is really awkward. I think you should rephrase this: Naomi looked from Alexia to Nikki, fidgeting restlessly, starting to speak a couple of times, stopping as she lost the words again, until finally she urged in a strained whisper, "What happened?”

VIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRR! YES YES YES YES YES. I LOVE THIS CHAPTER SO MUCH. YAAAAAAAY! I'm literally dancing with happiness. When I read this I actually thought of Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (minus the black strip). This conclusion was by far the best I have read. The tension. The drama. Goodness -- I'm shaking with anticipation. I cannot wait to find out what happens next! Well done, dearest Ether.

Yours sincerely,
Traunt

Haha! I love how you can switch between nitpicking and totally geeking out! That's a great balance for a reviewer to have ;-) And then you signed it off so formally lol <3

Let me congratulate you on your new status, Your Featuredness. You totes deserve it!

Thank you again for your review, your excitement, and your continued fandom. I never get over it and I think that is the best cure I know for procrastination. I'm also excited about what happens next, and to a certain extent I don't know until I write it! I'm loving it.

I am learning not to beat myself up if my work gets compared to existing stories. Subconsciously I am writing what I have been exposed to anyway, and although I only watched a few Buffy the Vampire Slayer and watched Star Wars ages ago, I am not shocked that they might have influenced me. I think as long as I am not thinking "Let me write my own version of Buffy," then it's ok. Besides, if you clearly enjoyed those stories and clearly enjoy PC, then I have no issues at all!

Your nitpicks opened my eyes in this one. How did I miss 8 commas hehe.... Thanks! Like I told Cricket, I will save your nitpicks, and refer back to them on the edits. But will note the ones about sentence flow, and try to be more conscious about that as I write Chapter 17 (which I am doing now) and beyond.

Missed you so much! Not just for reviewing, but coz you're an awesome friend too. Hope you kick life in the butt and properly return soon :-)

Hee hee. Thank you for your wonderful reply. Did I ever tell you how much I appreciate people replying? I think you're The Master of Replies. I love 'em!

Thank you, lovely. Actually, me and Therese were talking about who we thought was going to be featured next and she said she had a suspicion it was me. Coincidence? I think not xD I was surprised and so very happy <3

My fandom is off the scale. I am in love with Viper... Um. I mean, I love his character xD hahahah. Image

I would say you definitely beat Josh Wesdon whoever you spell it and George Lucas with storyline. (Sorry George! Ilu really!) I would personally say PC is far better. You're writing style is so professional. I love it! BTVS and SW can move aside, PC is here!

I missed you too :( I was craving going on YWS and talking to you (and Sky, Therese, Writer, Timmy, Wolf...) but mainly you sssshhhhh. You're an awesome friend too.
I did kick life in the butt. It wasn't too please :P

Lol, you and your crazy coolness! Your pic of Spike is huuuuuge lmao! At first I refreshed a dozen times coz I just saw the corner and though that the black bit was a weird error hehe. But yeah, he is the essence of Viper. I have been finding pics for all my characters, and its hard to find one with Viper's exact hairstyle. If I could photoshop his hair, I think I'd get a close representation.

So I've made it into the YWS water cooler chatter! Well, I don't know about all that featured member stuff, we'll see :-P I haven't exactly been the most consistent reviewer. If it happens, awesome, but if not, oh well.

Hehe, wait until I get to the end before trashing Whedon and Lucas... Pretty exciting for me though, finishing my first novel. That will be a champagne moment for sure. which I can't share with most of my YWS friends unfortunately

I know xDD it is massive. I was hoping it was just my phone but nooooo. It had to be the pic! Hee hee. Spike is a good baddy, but Viper is SO much better. ^-^

I'm sure you'll get featured. It would totes unfair not to. You are a great reviewer, writer and friend :) I know I'll see you on my screen as an FM sooner or later.

Yesh. We'll have to celebrate! I have finished numerous novels (that sounds really big headed >.<) but they weren't of great standard. I think my writing gets better the more I do so :P YWS has really helped! I don't know where I'd be if I hadn't of found it.

Well, believe it or not, PC isn't at the level I want it to be yet. There are some published authors who finished like 15 novels before publishing their first one. But they didn't regret it because, like you have observed, with each novel comes a ton of practice and inevitable improvement. That author actually doesn't want to publish most of them, because for him in particular, they were all first drafts and he didn't like rewriting. When he finally accepted that he had to rewrite to improve, he got books he was proud to publish. So be big-headed about it! Finishing is an achievement. I also heard when you finish a first draft, you've done about 25% of the work. After that the real moulding-until-it-is-publishable starts.

I don't know if I've shared this link before but I'll do it again anyway: www.writingexcuses.com. The podcasts on this website are changing my life. At least my writing life!

As for Spike, weirdly enough he is appropriately sized when I access the page from my phone lol.

PS, I'm still in the process of reading your rewrite chapter, will comment soon :-)

Well, PC is amazing so far, so I am sure I will be blown away when it is up on the shelf in Waterstones. (xD). I think I have said to you, but Divergent's author (her name has slipped my mind) fourth draft was the one to get published. So that proves something. I'm actually not a big headed person, and I usually shy away from saying something of mine is good. I feel very awkward. Heh.

I will take a look. I keep forgetting. Lol. I'm sure it will be extremely helpful. And fun of course!

I'm glad the pic didn't seize your phone's screen.

Thank you. I can wait, no need to rush ;)

Hi! Cricket here for a review!

Sorry, that I'm so late. I've been absent from YWS for almost a week, and was unable to review this until now. I'll try and make sure this is a better review to make up for the delay. :D

The main thing I liked about this, was that your description and the way you especially portrayed the intercourse between Nikki and Alexia. Before this, I had known that Nikki had been through a lot and was angry, but I had never really taken the time to try and understand why. I mean, I hadn't really been focusing that much on Nikki for a while now, and had been mainly thinking about Alexia, so the history of Nikki wasn't that fresh in my mind. So when I reading through the anguish of what Alexia is feeling through Nikki, and then I learned that Nikki had been holding back! I've personally never been abused in my life at all, so I have absolutely no experience there, but the way you portrayed this throughout the chapter, made me understand the anguish that Nikki was going through, and you also did an amazing job at showing that, through Alexia. Very well done.

The use of italics I wasn't sure about at first, but after reading through this about five times or so, I actually found myself liking them. It split the world that Alexia was in with Nikki (or whatever you could call that) from the real world, and made it easy to differentiate from the rest.

One more thing, that I thought I should comment on before I go into nitpicks would be the consistency of your characters. As I'm reading through this book, I just can't help but notice how consistent they are. Like they have personalities. They have mood changes. But never do they just switch moods right in the middle of a scene without any warning to the reader. As somebody who gets scolded for that in just about every review that I get from a certain person, I applaud you for that. It's very well done how you manage to make your characters distinct from the other, while keeping their personality perfectly consistent all throughout. :)

Senra sat in the centre of the opening in the forest

All right, so first things first is this: There are three the's in this sentence. Now normally I'd just keep my mouth shut about it, as this is probably fairly common, but not in this case. The sentence is really hard to read and it doesn't flow that well. I'd try to maybe expand on the word forest. Maybe put an adjective before it? And maybe change the second the to an. Just a thought. I put it like that in my mind and it seemed right, but I'll let you be the judge of that. xD

It was a vast consciousness, made up of every thought, be it human, animal, plant, soil and stone, and there was no index to the flow.

Instead of the comma after "human" I would suggest using a semi-colon. The way it is right now, those two lines don't seem to relate enough to each other in order to be so closely connected to each other.

She gasped, but was lost in tree-mind for an hour.

This seems like a bit of telling to me. Instead of just telling us that she was lost in the tree-mind for an hour, why not say that she was lost in the tree-mind and don't ever say how long until she gets out of it. Then she can calculate how long she was lost in there for, or just something like that.

She had never seen a bear’s widen with horrific surprise,

I don't think "horrific" is the right word to use here. It didn't flow that well, and really drew away from the overall picture. In fact, I don't think there should be an adjective before "surprise". I got a clear picture without it. xD

Mr Brown

Period after Mr.

whimpering ,sobbing

Just a silly little nitpick. Comma needs to be moved back, so it's directly next to whimpering.

Naomi’s lamenting face

Lamenting seems rather poetic for this circumstance. Why not just use concerned and call it good?

When Alexia took in more of the room, she saw Jake, Casey, and Hanson, in the kitchen, each of them with their hands raised up in the universal sign of surrender...

... each of them with a kitchen knife hovering half an arm’s length in front of their faces.

OK, one last nitpick here. I think you're using the ellipsis incorrectly. For one, an ellipsis is used to represent a pause, not a sudden break. If you use an m-dash though, then that would go better with this circumstance. M-dashes represent an interruption and that's the impression that I got here, with this sudden break.

I have seen author's do what you just did here, and I must say that I do like it. The sudden break, and then the sentences flow right on into each other again. Very well done. I just think you should use the m-dash instead of the ellipsis is all. xD

Overall, this chapter is either my favorite or my second favorite. Chapter 15 was just too awesome for words to express, and yet... This one had more of a flow to it, and it also had less grammatical errors in it. But Chapter 15 had so much spirit, and so much emotion and drama... It's a difficult choice really.

One more thing. I'd just like comment on one MORE thing... All throughout while Alexia is connected with Nikki, I was wondering, where on earth is Jake?! Now I know that he was in the kitchen with a knife being held to him, but I was like soooo disappointed that he didn't like run in, and jump at Nikki or something. But I saw later on that you had a reason for him not jumping in and saving her, so well done. It kept the tension up, that way.

Alright, and I'm done! Hope this review helped, and I'm sorry if it's not as constructive as it could have been. xD I might be slightly out of practice for not reviewing as much lately, and this work is just amazing besides. Keep up the good work and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Keep writing!

~Cricket

Hi Cricket!

You're reviews are always awesome, this one is fabulous too! Your nitpicks are always educational, and I am saving all of your comments for when I am rewriting.

I love your comments about the scenes in general, as these are signals about what I'm getting right and what might need to change. I'm glad you saw the purpose of the italics, I used them so that I wouldn't have to add a line telling you that they are out of thought space, I could just jump to normal text instead.

Hehe, and yes, I knew that Jake would be missed and I had to explain why ;-)

I think your review was clear enough, but I will ask you questions if I come up with any. Thanks again! Working on the next chapter now, and naturally I'll let you know when it's ready!
