One In A Million

This is a very rough draft for a song in a miniature musical that my friend and I were working on. She loves to make characters and storylines, but she doesn't like song-writing or poetry, and she doesn't like connecting the 'strings' to each metaphorical nail on the wall. So of course that fell to me XD

It would be wonderful to get some feedback on whatever bits and pieces you happen to read--it's a bit long, so I don't blame you if you don't read the whole thing--so I can adjust our music for it. It's nothing serious and doesn't relate to our careers, or our lack thereof; it's just for fun :)

Also... she told me to mention that it's really best read with a fast-pace in mind. I suppose she's right...

Thank you! :D

Let’s get down to business,

As with the rest of the lot;

There’s money on the table

And gold in the pot.

As mother used to say:

Keep several steps ahead;

My foolish brothers held no value

In something a woman said.

So here I am on a golden throne,

With the best of silver crowns.

And here I am in trousers,

With other ladies in gowns.

But there’s money to be made,

And skirts just form a mess;

I’d rather be a’moving

In pants than in a dress.

~

One in a million

That you manage to stay alive

One in a million

That your funds will survive

One in a million

That you make it to the end of the season

One in a million

That you won’t face some sort of treason

One in a million

That you’ll make it at the start

One in a million

Someone won’t stab you in the heart

One in a million

That the money won’t make you brash

But in the end, to any end

It’ll all be worth the cash

~

So the mantra that I’ve learned,

As time ages the land,

Is that it’s one in a million

You gain the upper hand;

You should gather up your sources,

And face the brutal wind;

You should save it up and observe

Long before you spend.

And act a proper lady—

Of course, you needn’t worry on that—

A man like you needs only to bow,

And tip a velvet hat.

But I, a lady, must take precaution

Against the business man;

Cut my losses like the cord

And win it when I can.

To tell the truth I could hardly expect

That I’d find you at my door...

You’ve got the money, but as with all humans,

Lord knows you only want more.

Well, you’ve come to the right place,

But don’t be bothered by my technique;

I’ve heard many a weak-willed soul

Call it ‘horrifically unique’.

Now, listen up, and take some notes;

We might as well start to prep.

To make money like I do myself,

We have to go step by step.

~

One in a million

That I’ll see you still upright

One in a million

That I let you go without a fight

One in a million

That you’ll make it to the top

One in a million

That you force yourself not to stop

One in a million

That you’ll manage to save some face

Just remember, darling, it might be a game

But that doesn't mean it isn’t a race

~

One in a million

That your blood will never boil

One in a million

Good intentions won’t start to spoil

One in a million

You put family above profit

One in a million

You’ll remain a perfect prophet

One in a million

That you won’t spill any blood

One in a million

You get past this corrupt flood

One in a million

I won’t personally slit your throat

One in a million

I won’t throw your body into the moat!

One in a million

That I won’t purposely underrate

My ability to get a ‘million to one’

My good man, this is checkmate.

LIke you said, i didn't read all of it.. but from what i read, it was good. YEs, there are some imporvements, but i think it all starts with the phrase "one in a million". It was repeated A LOT!! I know in a chorus you have to, but i think you OVERused it.
Im not saying change the whole song/chorus.. but in future songs, try not to use the title so much..

Other than that, IT WAS GREAT!!

That was amazing! I mean, imagine if we all could write like you, the world would be a boring place. That's why you stand out! Because not everyone can do what you just did with words! Thank you sooo much! You just made my day! Have a wonderful, wonderful day!

Yo!

First few lines got me thinking, "does this have the same melody of Mulan's 'Be a Man?'" So at first, I hummed the words to that tune in my head, and of course I realized that I was wrong.

It would be nice to have a melody to follow, in order for me to judge the flow of the piece. Just from reading it, however, I think it flows nicely for the most part. The lines that didn't flow well to me are only nitpicks:

I'd rather be a'moving
in pants than in a dress

I know that the a' keeps the same rhythm with the previous couplets, but I'd remove it. The missing beat makes it sound like a conclusion to the verse more. You did a good job in making that feel with your choruses, but they're a bit long.

As a starting lyricist myself, take this review with a grain of salt. Hopefully this helps though.

hi there! I don't recognize any works from you so this'll be a first for me:)
I'm pretty impressed with your ability to write lyrics. The rhythm and rhyme is all there. I would love to hear the audio to match this. Catchy chorus and great words.
I don't have much criticism here. I've never really tried lyrics before; I'm more of a poet...
So as far as grammar, conventions, or anything like that to look for, I found none. Maybe I didn't read carefully, but it looks pretty spotless.
Sorry if this hasn't helped much...I don't have much to say. xD
so.....yeah.
great job :D

Hi :)
Thank you so much for reviewing! I appreciate it :)
I don't write lyrics too often, actually (I, too, prefer poetry)... I think I've done three in my short lifetime. I'm a sucker for my friend, though; she's like a sister to me. A very stubborn sister XD She insisted I help make a song base, and then help her make a song, and then help her do character sketches... it eased a lot of boredom, as you might imagine! :D
We haven't recorded any audio... We tried. But we both clam up very tightly when strange eyes or any type of recorder is involved, haha XD If I/we ever do manage to get a decent recording, I'll let you know :D
Thank you again! I really do appreciate the time and effort :)
