Give a Haiku Contest

Image

Giving and receiving gifts is one of the best parts about Birthday Parties right? In honor of YWS Birthday Week I'm challenging you all to give out haikus around the site! And to add to the fun we'll make it a contest!

The challenge is to see who can give out the most haikus to other YWS users! The contest will run all week starting Monday (Nov 11), until Saturday midnight (EST), so you have plenty of time to craft those haikus. If you'd like, you can use the hashtag #YWSBirthdayHaiku with your post!

Rules
1) Each haiku entry must be unique and written by you.

2) Each haiku must be written with a proper 5/7/5 syllable count (how to write a haiku directions at bottom of post).

3) To prevent spamming, each contest participant may not post more than 1 haiku on a person’s wall. (Though multiple people could post on 1 person's wall)

4) All haiku entries need to be saved in the contest thread so we can see who wins! Simply copy-paste the url-link when you post a haiku and make a single thread below to keep track of how many you've written throughout the week.

Prizes
First place will get A WINNER’S HAIKU and 1000 points.
Second place will get 500 points.
Third place 250 points.
And everyone who participates will get the joy of writing & giving haikus! :D

How to Write a Haiku:
Spoiler! :

While a formal haiku has quite a few requirements you can find here, for this contest, we'll go with the most simplified version of a haiku where the only rules are regarding line-breaks and syllable counts which you can find below!

The first line must have only 5 syllables
The second line must have only 7 syllables
The third line must have only 5 syllables

Example of Haiku:
It's a special week! (5)
Let's celebrate with haikus, (7)
poetry is fun! (5)

Use this website if you aren't sure about syllables: syllable counter .
but i don't think i can ever love someone
who doesn't understand that teal
is a different color than dark cyan.

Wait, I'm not sure how to show my haikus on here...
I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not.

@Jaybird , thank you! I'll try it a bit later; my net keeps going down randomly.

This sounds fun! Here is my master thread (to be updated as I write them)

1) For @alliyah

Poetry mistress
and #unclassified leader
who loves dark cyan.

2) For @GayestBanana (inactive but its their birthday and they have a fun username so why not?)
It is your birthday.
Your username is awesome,
So have a haiku.

3) For @JabberHut (context, she has recently surpassed both me and @Kale in the all-time review leaderboards and is on track to lose her last blue star).

You have beaten me,
And soon you'll be blue no more.
Aim for the top 10.

4) For @Jaybird

Storybook maven,
a dominant greeting force,
and great Yewis mod.

5) For @nickelpickle

My name-twin of old,
though you have long since logged out,
I remember you.

6) For @Nate (I know it said one per person, but surely he deserves two?)

Our fearless founder.
Without you we would not be
here for fifteen years.

Great chimp overlord,
I assume your whereabouts
are now #classified.

7) For @Traves (who requested the funniest haiku I've got. All I could come up with is the sequel to my avatar sequence).

At last, Mittens got
some cat brains, only to find
they tasted like chicken.

8) For @Oxara (who requested me to write about myself and my awesome haikus)

Once there was an owl
Who was not very wise, but
She wrote great haikus.

9) For marchinnggurl89 (an irl friend who hasn’t been on the site in years, but I thought I’d make her one anyway

Here’s to surviving
To 30. Though you won’t see it,
Here’s a birthday haiku.
"You do ill if you praise, but worse if you censure, what you do not understand." Leonardo Da Vinci

As a main thread, here is the start.

1) For @CaptainJack

a flower blooms now,
and brings along stems searching
for a kindred soul.

2) For @alliyah

you are a poet,
the grandest I've ever read,
and a real delight
farewell, once, amidst a wave.

haunting clear skies with secrets
they have yet to tell

perks to killeham,
concord, now fraey; many names,
but kindness the same.

For @Jaybird

Consistent tortoise,
orange veteran of the site,
writer - JabberHut

You're a talented writer,
and also - funny!

For @EternalRain

A Squills editor,
Fairy-Tale poem writer,
level-headed mod!

For @Tuckster

Here for a while,
but Tuck's sure making a mark!
Thoughtful. Diligent.

For @ShadowVyper

Scientist-writer,
Shady will take poems and prose!
Ambitious and fun!

she will tell you what she means!

There's an error. I'm not able to access the posts in the hashtag. But I've tried getting all the haikus I wrote here... Not sure if I missed some. Will edit if I get them.

To @FlamingPhoenix :

Sixty-three and more
Comments have brought us both joy,
So keep them coming!

To @MiniGem26 :

Only when you fade
Do I see what light you give
Slip away like day.

To our supreme Moderator:

I write a haiku
Made to commemorate you
Our own @alliyah .

To @BlueFeltrix :

Fellow warrior
I beg of thee to breathe life
To our sweet tavern.

To @TheBlueCat :

The sun sleeps for now,
I yawn and prepare to hunt
For my mother Bast.

To @Raelyn :

The pages we turn
Brought two of us together,
Bonding over books.

To @Simonsn338 :

Wipe away your tears,
And look to the starry sky;
Each one is your friend.

.........

Climb that high mountain,
So through your mournful visage
You see the sunrise.
I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not.
