The Photo: Chapter One (Part Two corrected)

I rang the doorbell to Mrs. Ranker's house. Kenneth answered the door, chewing gum, with, of course, his ear buds in, listening to who knows what kind of wretched music. "Is Mrs. Ranker home right now?" I questioned the gum-chewing, music-loving boy.

"I dunno." He said between chews. "I think she went to the library for 'knowledge'." He used his fingers as quotations.

"Well, that is what you do at a library, get knowledge." I stated flatly.

"Hey, I have all the knowledge I need in this thing right here." He tapped his iPod.

I rolled my eyes as Ken started to play imaginary drums.

I trudged up the stairs to my room. My new room, that is. My old one didn't survive the fire. I winced as I remembered it. Slowly I opened my door, closed, and locked it. I needed privacy for this. I walked towards my bed and looked under it. There was my open notebook, waiting for me to spill my secrets onto its blank pages. I pulled it out, and began to write.

August 15th. Nothing new today. Mrs. M. dropped an old photograph on the ground after counseling session today.....if you even want to call it that. We hardly got started when she said we were finished. She seemed as if she were going to cry right then and there. The photo is of her and a little baby with gorgeous eyes. I wish I had eyes like that. Mine are just a dull grey, nothing special.

I closed my journal, and slid it back under the bed. I then stood up to look in the mirror. A dull image of a girl with straight jet-black hair and pale skin stared back at me. Her appearance unnerved me. I smiled. But the smile wasn't a real one. I was good at faking.

Mrs. Ranker gladly took me in after my family died. They were very good friends with my mom and dad, and Ken was good friends with my brother. The day they showed me my new room, I faked a smile, I faked a laugh. I sighed. When couldn't anything be real?

I heard the front door open, and I ran out to help Mrs. Ranker. "Rose, could you help me with these books here?" Mrs. Ranker asked. I rushed over to catch the books that were spilling out of the bag.

"Kenneth, can you come over here and help?" Mrs. Ranker asked looking overwhelmed. Ken continued to chew on his gum and play the drums. "Kenneth!" Ken now switched to guitar, completely oblivious of the trouble he was getting himself into. "KENNETH!" Mrs. Ranker dropped the bags of books and pulled the ear buds out of Kenneth's ears. Kenneth immediately grabbed for them, but Mrs. Ranker was to quick.

  "Moooooom!" Kenneth moaned.

Mrs. Ranker slid the ear buds into her pocket. "You will get these back in a couple of days. Grab the bags and take them into the kitchen. NOW!"

Kenneth looked like he was about to argue, but apparently changed his mind. He stomped over, grabbed the bags, and stormed into the kitchen. I followed him with mine.

"You can skip washing the dishes tonight Rose." Mrs. Ranker said to me. "Someone else will be taking care of that tonight." She glared at Kenneth.

Ken rolled his eyes and started to wash dishes.

"I am going to go to bed then." I said. "I am a bit tired from the walk to Mrs. M's house and back." I forced a yawn for emphasis. I didn't tell her the real reason I was going to bed early is that I was never able to sleep at night.

  "Okay, Goodnight." Mrs. Ranker replied.

"Goodnight!" I said, and I walked up the stairs to my room. I quickly got dressed for bed, and grabbed the picture of the baby off my dresser, and laid down on my bed.

I always have doubts, and fears right before I go to bed; and they had already started flying at me like daggers. Who killed my family? Why did they do it? Will Mrs. Ranker and Ken continue to accept me despite how different I am from them?

I then looked down at the photo. It seemed to shimmer and glow as I held it. Especially the baby. Slowly my doubts and fear left me, and the blue-eyed baby gave me hope.

Let's get right into this critique! :)
First of all, I don't think the phrase "gum chewing, music loving" is needed. We can already tell that Ken is these things just from the narrative. "the boy" would be a better way to end the sentence.
I like the plot, still.
You did confuse "to" with "two" once, and I noticed a couple comma errors.
Keep writing this!

Hello again! Here to review Part Two.

Didn't pick up on any grammatical errors with this chapter, which was good, and I thought that it was even better than part one - you've begun to show more about the character, and, as the reader, I feel like I'm getting to know her better.

So instead of doing an uber-technical grammar-based review, I thought I'd talk about the story, and things that stand out.

This is relevant to Part One of this chapter too - the reader needs to be aware of the protagonist's name. In this part, we learn that it's Rose, but I do feel like you have to make sure the reader's got a strong grasp of what her name is as early on as possible. Because this is written in first-person, this can be tricky and I'll admit that it's something I've struggled with myself, but it's important that you make sure that the reader has a strong grasp on the name of the narrator early on. How you do that is up to you, but I'd suggest having Mrs M call her 'Rose' would be a place to start.

I then stood up to look in the mirror. A dull image of a girl with straight jet-black hair and pale skin stared back at me

I'm kinda nitpicking here, and obviously whether you change this or not is up to you. Describing how your protagonist looks is one of those tricky things when you're writing in the first person, and the 'looking in the mirror and describing what they see' is a trope that a lot of writers fall into. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, but it is often overused, and I just thought I'd point it out.

Something I noticed about this was that the start felt like a whole new chapter. That's not a problem, necessarily, but because it was posted as 'chapter one, part two', I expected that it would flow on directly from where the previous left off. It's up to you how you present it, but when thinking in 'published novel' terms, this probably would be a whole new chapter. To improve the flow all you'd need would be a paragraph or two where Rose is walking home.

Just out of curiosity, why did you decide to include the third-person bit about Mrs M at the end of the previous part? It kinda breaks up the chapter (again, I'm thinking of part 1 and part 2 being two halves of a whole chapter), and it would be possible to have Rose overhearing her as she leaves? Just a thought.

I'm definitely starting to enjoy your writing style, and it's started to get me intrigued about this photo, and what will happen next. Keep it up!

:D Thanks for the review! I just now realized that Mrs. M. talking at the end of part one does break it up....I didn't realize that before... :D

Hi, SnazzyPencil! I am here for a review! :D

I really liked how you expressed your main character's feelings at the end. It just made her so much more real to me. :) But there were a few mistakes I noticed.

with of course his ear buds in, (You should put a comma after 'with' and 'course' ((Two commas total)) )

her appearance unnerved me. (You forgot to capitalize the 'h' in her)

grabbed the bags and stormed into the kitchen. (You need a comma after 'bags')

"Someone else will be taking care of that tonight. She glared at Kenneth. (You forgot to put the end of speech marks (") after tonight)

"I am a bit tired from the walk to Mrs. M's house and back. I forced a yawn for emphasis. (You forgot it here too, after 'back')

Now, that's all I found, but I'm going to have to disagree with jazzydracula. 'Who killed my family?' There SHOULD be a question mark after this sentence, not a period.

Away from all that though! :D This story it really going great. I'm really enjoying it. I hope you make the next part/chapter soon! :D

Keep writing!

Hello, SnazzyPencil! I haven't read part one and I know I should, but I'm not even meant to be on here so I'm just going to go ahead and review this quickly. Having not read part one, I might not understand some things. So just forgive me... :)

listening to who know what kind of wretched music.

This should either be who knew or who knows.

I like this Kenneth guy, he's a funny addition to your story.

Did she move in with these people because her house burnt down, or was she already living with them? It would be good to clarify. (Sorry if this is in part one.)

I close my journal, and slid it back under the bed.

Your tenses are conflicting. Close and slid- change one of them.

Who could my family? Why did they do it?

Who killed my family.

There you go! Those are all the corrections I can find. Good job. :D

Thanks for the help! I didn't clarify why she moved in with them in part one, I could fit that in here though! :D Again, thanks for the Review! :D
