It felt like two seconds before I was being jostled awake again. I rubbed my eyes and sat up. "Your turn," Ben said, only a few feet away. Nodding, I stood up. I sat down at the edge of the cave, yawning. A moment later, Ben came up behind me.
I folded my arms across my chest, pulling my legs in. Ben was right. It was cold away from the fire. Ben draped the large blanket around my shoulders, and sat down.
I hesitated, a little pang of sympathy getting the better of me. "What about you?" I asked awkwardly. Ben looked cold - shivering every so once in a while. I gave him part of the blanket, and he nodded.
"Thanks." For a while, neither of us said anything. It was probably a good thing. I kind of still wanted to kill him for almost killing me, and for stealing my brother... It already seemed like Johnny liked him more than his own sister.
"So, you want answers?" I looked at him inquisitively. Now was his chance? I nodded slowly.
"I want you to start from the beginning," I said softly. "Tell me everything you know about where we're going, and why." He let out a long sigh before starting.
"Alright. You ever heard of The Box?" I shook my head no. "The Box is meant for the president, the vice president, and all of their men and women in case of emergencies. It can house roughly one million people. They've never had to use it but one time, and that was a false alarm.
No one really knows about it. Where it is, or why it can house so many people, but, it exists. Recently, there's been some leakage, and let's just say they had to use The Box again."
"For the president?" Ben shook his head, taking a deep breath.
"For everyone. Something so catastrophic is happening right now, that they've gotten together all the scientists, the celebrities, and the wealthy, and stuck them in the box. Most everyone has gotten in, actually. Except for us."
"You mean, just us four?" Ben chuckled a bit.
"No, all of us 'mediocres'. The people who 'don't really matter'. Your average Joe. Not everyone can fit."
"That's kind of stupid," I remarked.
"It's more than stupid," he muttered. For about the first time since I'd met Ben, I agreed with him.
"So - why weren't they prepared? I mean, to have a big enough box for a big disaster like this?" Ben hesitated, picking up a twig, and throwing it out of the cave.
"They weren't expecting it. That kind of stuff only happens in books, ya' know?" He paused, rubbing his hands together.
"Anyway, a government led group called The Silver League basically goes searching for the most important people, and contains the rest. By any means necessary."
My mind suddenly flashed back to the alley. The man with the silver tattoo. He was one of them.
Ben carried on. "So about a year ago, this all started, and another, good, group was formed. The Shadowed Elite. It started out as a few speaking out against The Box - and all the secrets that were kept from them. After a few were sent to jail for it, the group was founded."
"And that's what you're a part of?"
"Yep. We have a leader, then the leader's wing-man. There are several other high positions, and then people like me. Warriors, Burrow Hole Guarders, Doctors, Messengers, and the list goes on."
"And you're a Burrow Hole Guarder then?" I shivered, pulling my half of the blanket around me tighter.
"Yeah. To be a Guard you have to know how to fight - and I kind of just picked the basics of doctoring up on my own."
"So where are we going?"
"The Shadowed Elite's home-base. There, we're safe from the Silver League while we devise a plan..."
"A plan for what?"
Ben looked at me, his brown eyes intense. "We're going to get into The Box. We're going to be safe." I nodded, looking up at the sky. The glittering stars seemed to question everything that came out of Ben's mouth, and I struggled to believe him. I wanted to believe something, someone so bad... But it was hard to.
"And," Ben seemed to read my thoughts, "I know you can trust me, Magdeline," he whispered. "But security's been a little shady the past couple of weeks, so be careful who you trust once we get to home-base." He took the blanket off, and gave it to me.
"You have about an hour and a half left. I'm going to get some sleep." Ben stood to go back into the cave, but I reached out in the dark to stop him.
"Thanks," I whispered.
Ben seemed taken aback by my kindness, and I guess I couldn't blame him. I hadn't been particularly friendly to him during the trip - but who could blame me? He nodded stiffly and walked deeper into the cave. I pulled the blanket around me, now wide awake.
I watched the stars for a while. I didn't know much about them, or why God would put them there, but, they existed. Like little jewels on a velvet scarf. They were pretty to look at, but unless you knew your way around them, they were pretty much useless.
I snuck a look back in the cave. Ben was on his side next to Johnny, his eyes closed. Martin was snoring, but not quite as loud. I listened to the soft crackle of the fire, and leaned up against the mouth of the cave. Already tired again, I sighed. It was going to be a long night.

The ship is slowly sailing! Eee!

Anyway...
*to self* You already complained enough about minor grammar issues...Snazzy doesn't need to hear about them again...
Back to the review! I liked the mention of God, since I'm a Christian, but if this isn't a religious story, it was a bit out of place and could annoy secular readers. The details are as good as ever.
I'll confess, I'm a little sad that I'm nearing the end of this.
It would've been sensible of me to review this on review day, really, but apparently I'm not sensible.
The way the dialogue tag is placed here makes it sound like Maggie said this, not Ben. I'd suggest rewording, or moving things around!
So fussy it's insane, but I feel like books wouldn't be such a thing in the future. I mean, they might, I'm not there... but even nowadays, someone is more likely to say that stuff only happens in movies, on TV etc, y'know? Idk I'm just a picky little swine.
YAY WE KNOW STUFF.
No, but in all seriousness, I'm super glad you've revealed this to us because if it were to drag on any longer, I may have turned insane. I love the concept too. The whole segregating the elite from the normal folk at the end of the world (or something similar) isn't insanely original, but it's hardly a cliche either. If done well, it can become something super exciting and unique. I love how Ben's character is developing too because we're seeing him become more and more three-dimensional as time moves on. I liked the foreshadowing of corruption within these rebel groups (sort of rebel groups, you know what I mean). It's an interesting twist on things that could definitely develop into something pretty cool.
I don't have heaps of critiques, but there are a few things that bugged me. Firstly, where are Maggie's questions? At the moment, Ben is explaining the whole thing in a one-sided conversation kind of way. Don't get me wrong, Maggie asks some stuff about The Box and all that, she just doesn't seem to ask a hell of a lot about The Shadowed Elite. Considering that's where she's being shipped off to currently, I feel like she should want to know more. I am being rather fussy here because for one, you don't want this chapter full of Maggie asking questions, but I just feel like she should question The Shadow Elite more. How do they know about The Box? How long have they been around? What exactly is this catastrophic event that's going on? That's the main one for me. Not once does Maggie wonder what this event is and, I mean, if this was me that's the first thing I'd want to know. Is the world ending? Why? How? Even if Ben doesn't give her the answer, I still want her to ask! Just a few things to think about, anywho.
Something pretty nit-picky is the idea of Maggie being on watch. I mean, she's clearly not a weak, helpless damsel in distress or anything, but she is pretty young and inexperienced. As such, would Ben and Martin realistically want to put her in that position? If someone or something tries something while Maggie is on guard, things could get tricky. Obviously, I'm sure she'd call out the second anything happened, but that's not really suggested. Plus what if some evil dude comes and knocks her out, covers her mouth e.t.c. before she can alert anyone? I understand that everyone needs sleep, and so they will swap on watch, but couldn't Martin and Ben do that alone? Again, this is so picky, but it struck me as a little dodgy.
That's all I have, methinks. Sorry for taking a little while to get to this, by the way, I've been away for a week or so all busy-like. Overall, I really enjoyed this chapter, and love that I know what the heck is going on now
Keep writing,
xoxo Skins
Yes, I believe the runaway experiment is brought back in the next chapter (although I could be wrong, as I was the last time with thinking this scene was in chapter 5... )

Anyway, I see now what you mean about Maggie not asking questions. I'll try and stick a few more in - although still have Ben not answer a few (this time for the reason that he just doesn't know, maybe... )
Anyway, thanks for the review!!
You're so like me with recollections of your own novel, and I love it <3
Yeah, it's not like she needs to question her entire existence or anything, just throw in some more about certain things. Even if she just internally asks them, she doesn't necessarily have to ask Ben!
Hello, Snazzy!
Here for another review.
This really helped clear up the confusion and needing to know more. Don't worry about about this being too much of an 'information-overload'. To me, it felt like just the perfect amount of answers while still keeping us wondering. To be totally honest, now that we have names, I think there's even more mystery; like The Silver League, now we want to know all about them; and The Box, why wouldn't they make it large enough for more people? I think you did really well in that aspect.
Anyway, I really loved the description afterwards. Very, very elegant.
Looking forward to further installments.
Yes, finally some answers!
I have something to bring up, though I'm not all the way certain if it's a mistake or a nitpick. "I know you can trust me, Magdeline," he whispered." To me, this sounds like he's saying that HE knows that she can trust him. Why would he say that he knows she can trust him? Maybe I don't all the way understand what you're trying to say, or maybe it's just a typo. Either way it's not a big deal.
Another thing I want to nitpick on is when you were describing the stars. Now, I'm an atheist myself, but I don't understand why she would be wondering why God put them there. I mean, doesn't she know science stuff? They're stars, you know, some of them are planets, others are stars, like our sun, there to give light to other galaxies. This just confused me and the only way it makes sense to me is that Maggie is uneducated in science. Or maybe it's a Christian thing, of which I apparently have no knowledge of. If that's the case then just ignore this.
Well, that's all. Great work, Snazzy.

I see what you mean about that one sentence... I never noticed it till now. xD

Oh - and about the description stars... I guess that wouldn't really work, since I didn't have anything whatsoever about Maggie's religion/beliefs... So I should probably change the description. (I guess I'm kind of accidentally mixing in my own beliefs with hers, since I haven't actually developed her fully...
hehe...)Anyway, thanks for the review!
Yolo peoples!!!! LadyRanicorn here for another AMAZING review!!!!!
On to the review!!!!!
Snazz, so sorry for not reviewing earlier. To make it up I'm going to review this piece, which I already know that it's going to be AMAZING!!!!
What I enjoyed about this chapter the most is the ending. Now I know that it's a bit tacky for me to start the review with something that's at the end. But that's just my style. What I liked the most about the ending is the suspense. I really, really, REALLY love added suspense. It helps me to not give up on the book, which has happened in the past before. OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry for the sudden ending, brother was smashing my fingers in between my laptop thingy's.
Hey,
I haven't read the previous chapters, but this looks like an interesting story.
One thing that stood out to me were parts like this:
When I first read this, having "Ben chuckled a bit" positioned right next to "You mean, just us four?" makes it sound like Ben is the one talking, and then someone else responds with:
However, when I reach the next sentence or the one after that, I realize it was Magdeline speaking, then Ben chuckling at what she said, and replying.
For me, this is confusing and takes away from the dialogue, because I'm concentrating on figuring out who is talking. I would find this a lot easier to understand if the sentences were organized slightly different:
Overall I think you've done very well and I love some of the descriptions you've used.
I'm interested to watch the plot and characters develop further.
Keep writing!
