The Reasons.

In Poetry

Why do I do it?

Why do I work and toil in this inky dirt and soil?

What am I trying to make in this empty place?

I build sculptures that the light might never catch.

I have a chicken which lays no eggs,

they tell me without eggs I will starve.

hey tell me to pursue brighter endeavours.

I tell them it's a goose,

and that it will lay a golden egg.

A golden egg it has yet to lay,

but one day it  may.

I thought I did it for this maybe golden egg.

For a chance at something shiny.

This is not the reason,

for I have never cared for any eggs.

I would die of starvation before giving up this pursuit.

But what is the reason?

I cry it to myself at night,

I whisper it in my morning yawn.

It's the reason I bother to breathe.

This was very well thought out. I agree with Joelsweet when they say it can be exhausting when you're working hard but not receiving any reward. I can relate to this because when I think about school and all the homework we do but we never get anything in return it's extremely annoying. Okay, maybe we gain knowledge but we don't really notice it. Also, when I do chores for my parents and they don't even say 'thankyou' that cuts down on the possibility that I'm going to want to do that chore again. I hope I didn't misinterpret this poem! Overall, this is a really deep message that most people don't ever figure out. Fantastic job and keep up with the great writing!

You've got it right on a certain scale :D
really a poem is about whatever you think it's about but when I wrote this one I was considering the challenge of putting effort into anything, motivating oneself in a world as drab and shoddy as this one.

A deep, introspective piece on what it means to pursue something and wonder why one is even doing it in the first place. The day in, day out routine of going to school or working at a job, and not seeing the fruits of your labor can be an exhausting process. Wondering why, why? Starving for lack of money, without a reason, seemingly. I like this poem a lot. It flows well, and I like your allegories.

Thanks!~

(PS- By no means am I a professional poet)

thanks I'm glad you liked it and caught on to the meaning. I'm normally not so good at conveying meaning.
