Stolen Tears

In Poems

There were no flowers that year,
And the children's minds
Were stunted.
The air was filled with noises like broken song through water,
Because you could hear them think.
The old men couldn't,
But to us mothers it was as plain as day.
Like that night when I found Auntie Lacy
Hovering over my baby's cradle.
The sound of broken glass was deafening,
And when I stopped in the doorway
And her eyes turned to look at me,
There was nothing there.
Weaving through her fingers
Cat's cradle stolen electricity
Then I screamed
And screamed
And she drew herself out the window.
My boy hasn't cried since.
Sue tells me it's okay
When I weep over the lemonade,
But I've seen the severed flower heads in the grass.
When he laughs I can only hear glass breaking.
And he loves that lemonade,
He drinks every drop.

Hey there! My name's Rosie, and I'll be reviewing this today!

First off, I adore the feeling of this poem. It's sort of weird, but in a good way, and I'm a big fan of poetry that's like that. It also borders on being slightly jumbled, but you managed to keep it just polished enough to be an interesting read without crossing the line to being too difficult to understand. Great work!

There's a very nice rawness about this piece, especially in the last four lines. The simplicity of it adds to the weird feeling I mentioned earlier, and it accentuates that feeling very nicely.

If I had any critique, it would be to make more of the poem like the last four lines. My favorite poetry - and this is just my personal preference, so if you disagree with me, don't feel bad at all - rides the line between being blurred and telling a story, and you did this very well in the last four lines. However, during the middle of the poem, I missed the little touches of imagery that you showed in the last part. So maybe, in future poems, I would consider using more of your awesome imagery.

Overall, amazing work! Oh, and welcome to YWS. I absolutely love it here, and I hope you do too. I hope to see more of your work. :D

Best wishes,

-Rosie

Thank you so much! I feel like I'm finally discovering my style and it's such a great sensation. I could have over fifty poems on this site already, but I've decided to only put up ones I've written very recently. So anyway, thanks again. :) The middle part is definatly missing something. I'm not quite sure what I'll do, but I will take your advice and give it more color.

'Hush, hush!' I whispered; 'people can have many cousins and of all sorts, Miss Cathy, without being any the worse for it; only they needn't keep their company, if they be disagreeable and bad.
