The Secret of Tayburn Zoo: 24

Crothers cleared off as quickly as he was able, which was no surprise to Dexi. He had led them a little way forward along the path, the threat of being taken back to Neuromax headquarters constantly hanging over their heads to keep them in line. But after barely a minute or so his phone buzzed and, after briefly examining a text, he'd grinned at them all, with a quick salute.

"Alright, freakshows, you are officially off my hands. You have nothing to do with Neuromax… and you never have," he murmured. He made a big show of wiping his hands against each other, with big clapping noises punctuating the motion. "Goodbye forever!"

With that he turned and strode away, back to the van. Dexi started to follow him, but by the time she'd shaken off the surprise, he was already slamming the door behind him and reversing away from where he'd parked. He'd closed a thick, iron barred gate behind him, and Dexi heard the click and beep of an automatic lock.

She turned back to her eight companions. "So, through the bars?"

"I think we're meant to go up there," Chip said, pointing up the hill at the mansion house.

"And presumably Crothers was meant to take us there," Dexi said. She did the jerky motion that she used as a shrug. "But he couldn't be bothered, so why should we?"

She held Chip's gaze, and his eyes quickly widened and looked away. He looked around at the others, his back hunching over as he shrank into the ground. She probably shouldn't have tried to get him to lead anything.

"Thoughts, Juliet?" Dexi asked, looking first at one sleek black labrador, then at the other when she realised the first was staring at her in wide-eyed confusion.

Juliet shrugged, which she came closer to accomplishing than Dexi had. "Might as well try."

Dexi nodded, glancing quickly at Chip. He began to follow her towards the entrance gate, as did the others.

The gate was maybe fifty metres away now, and as Dexi's short, rapid steps brought her slithering along the ground towards it, she found her pace picking up even faster. By the end it was like she imagined it would feel like to chase prey, and she was not going to stop until the gate was hers.

Her snout bumped into one of the iron bars, and a spark of pain shot up it. The gate hadn't budged an inch. Well, that was fine, she wasn't trying to open it. Beside her, Lisa and Sue hopped and scurried through the gap respectively, smiling sadly at Dexi.

"I'm pretty sure I can get through too," Chip said, arriving to her right. He turned sideways and measured himself against the gap, which was maybe ten centimetres wide. "Maybe if we find a way to turn you sideways? I know what you're going to say, but it's just your turn to be undignified. Me and Juliet had ours this morning... or yesterday."

"Fine!" Dexi shouted, the slight pain mixing with her adrenaline to turn into a rising panic. Her eyes moved around in their sockets as far as they could go as she tried to encourage the others. "I know we messed up before but come on, everyone, we can-"

She gasped. That was a much, much sharper spike of pain than before. She tried to turn around, but that was difficult enough at the best of times and she could already barely feel her legs. When she did feel them, they tingled, and she couldn't quite feel their position on the ground.

"Chip," she croaked, looking up at him. With wide eyes he sprang towards her, but a moment later fell sideways against her, with the sleek, light fletching of a tranquiliser dart in his side. That explained the new spike of pain.

Dexi heard groans around her. She could still see, but her vision had narrowed, or she couldn't look down. She couldn't tell the difference. Her head felt like it was being crushed from both sides, but at the same time she was completely numb. She was on her side, looking at a spot of blue sky, her whole being still tingling but too numb to notice.

Then finally, mercifully, the blue spot she'd clung to winked out, and she closed her eyes.

---

The first thing Dexi saw was just the worst wallpaper. Like, what was Patrick thinking?

“Dexi?”

Was that Treego? It was certainly the watery rumble of a frog’s voice. But it couldn’t be Treego. Wait, why couldn’t it be Treego? Because he was still at the zoo. With the terrible wallpaper. So if Treego was here… she was back at the zoo.

Then why did he sound so concerned?

She pushed herself up but a big black and white arm surged forward and pressed her gently back down. She stared at the baby blue ceiling and watched mutely as a frowning panda face moved slowly into her vision.

“Yeah, Treego, she’s awake,” Aurora called.

But Aurora hadn’t been in the van. The van!

This time Dexi sprang up but backwards at the same time, out of Aurora’s reach. Her tail jabbed into the bottom of a sofa and she yelped, dissociating for a moment from her own vision. She screwed her eyes up and managed to regain some clarity.

The others, the eight she’d travelled with, were all still out for the count on the floor. But she was being stared at with varying levels of concern and impatience by Aurora and Treego. There was also a young monkey she thought might be called Rosie, and a few more animals she didn’t know very well. As well as one she did.

“Rita!” she screamed, and shot forward, scrambling up a different couch and forcing her vision to stop swimming as she balanced on the back. In front of her, a mirror image of herself on the back of the sofa’s other seat, was her best friend.

“Quiet…” came a murmur from the floor. Apparently Chip was awake after all.

“Rita - how are you… did Neuromax take you? And Aurora, how did you get here?” She knew her voice was ragged, trying desperately to keep up with her frantic breathing.

“Well, I was too big for the van, so Haldane brought me down by herself. Didn’t trust MacLean not to just set me free, by the sounds of it.” Aurora shrugged, and Dexi remembered being vaguely irritated about shrugging, but the thought was all buzzy and she couldn’t finish it.

“As for us,” Treego said, “We’re not at Neuromax, and of course neither were you, according to literally everyone-”

“But we just came from there!” Dexi snapped.

Treego paused. “Alright, literally everyone human. Except Patrick, presumably. And his lawyer, Josh. And to be honest I don’t think Marie really believes it either.”

Dexi frowned and stared at him. “Patrick got a lawyer?”

Treego nodded, which was really just his whole body bobbing forward. “Oh yes, a rather dashing fellow. Sounds like the young man has gained us our freedom.”

What?” Dexi exclaimed.

Dexi watched some of her companions drag themselves to sitting positions as Treego told the story of a government who had found the experiments of rogue scientist Patrick McAfferty. They had planned to return the animals to their natural state, but activist pressure, spearheaded by one Josh MacKenzie, with cameos from Patrick’s very cute grandchildren, had convinced the public that this would be tantamount to murder.

When he was done, Dexi took a deep breath, and for once in her life chose her next words carefully. “So what you’re saying is that we’re free? We can go back to the zoo with Patrick?”

Treego smiled briefly, but it was only a flash. “That does sound lovely, doesn’t it. But honestly, I have no idea. We’re waiting for Marie to get back. You were probably the surprise she promised us, but maybe there’s another on the way.”

After a few more groggy minutes of the Neuromax nine getting themselves to lucidity, and introductions of the new dogs, mice and rabbits, the door finally flew open.

Treego cleared his throat and gestured towards the tall, dark-skinned woman who’d just burst in, white lab coat flapping behind her. “This is Marie.”

Marie glanced about the room, eyes resting briefly on each of the new arrivals. But she didn’t ask any questions, which Dexi supposed made sense if she had arranged this welcome reunion in the first place.

“Alright everyone,” she said, “Part two of today’s excitement. We have a proposal for you. We’re going to try something.”

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night(whichever one it is in your part of the world),

And one more chapter. Four more left of the ones that were uploaded.

First Impression: Okay..so that seems like a good escape attempt there. Very realistic that they would attempt that. Aandd...another surprise. Well it has been surprise after surprise so far in the last few pages of this.

Anyway let's get to it,

Crothers cleared off as quickly as he was able, which was no surprise to Dexi. He had led them a little way forward along the path, the threat of being taken back to Neuromax headquarters constantly hanging over their heads to keep them in line. But after barely a minute or so his phone buzzed and, after briefly examining a text, he'd grinned at them all, with a quick salute.

Surprising that Dexi doesn't just bit his leg off. That would solve a lot of problems.

"Alright, freakshows, you are officially off my hands. You have nothing to do with Neuromax… and you never have," he murmured. He made a big show of wiping his hands against each other, with big clapping noises punctuating the motion. "Goodbye forever!"

Wonder how much they had to pay the government to get them to agree with this. Also you'd think that the government would send some secret vehicle to pick them up rather than having the Neuromax people get a peak at the government's secret facility.

The gate was maybe fifty metres away now, and as Dexi's short, rapid steps brought her slithering along the ground towards it, she found her pace picking up even faster. By the end it was like she imagined it would feel like to chase prey, and she was not going to stop until the gate was hers.

Well that's a good subtle way of giving us a sense of the scale of this mansion and its grounds.

Oh poor guys. Everyone is just getting tranquilized and drugged so often.

“Yeah, Treego, she’s awake,” Aurora called.

Aurora is back!! Yaay!!. Now I want a hug from her.

Okay that makes a lot of sense. Now I wonder what's going on with Patrick.

Alright everyone,” she said, “Part two of today’s excitement. We have a proposal for you. We’re going to try something.”

This sounds ominous for some reason.

Aand that's it for this one.

Overall: Well this appears to maybe be approaching another plot point that sends it to another climax. I feel like we still haven't reached the point from where the story is starting to got towards a conclusion. And well let's go take a look at that surprise I guess.

As always remember to take what you think was helpful and forget the rest.

Bisc!

Slow to the party, as always, but here as promised -- and looking forward to it! Let's get started...

"Alright, freakshows, you are officially off my hands. You have nothing to do with Neuromax… and you never have," he murmured. He made a big show of wiping his hands against each other, with big clapping noises punctuating the motion. "Goodbye forever!"

>.> Oh goodness can someone just maul him already? He's such a jerk.

"Maybe if we find a way to turn you sideways? I know what you're going to say, but it's just your turn to be undignified.

Aww, that's so sweet <3

But she was being stared at with varying levels of concern and impatience by Aurora and Treego.

This is phrased a bit oddly because with the "varying levels" I kind of assumed it would be multiple people looking at her -- but then it just turns out to be Aurora and Treego, so the phrasing seems a bit weird.

Okay so I really like this paragraph, but I don't necessarily like that it has Treego being the narrator for it, if that makes sense? Like, if you have like a news station telling the story of "rogue scientist Patrick McAfferty" then that would make sense -- I could definitely see that reel going with flashes from his grandkids and a clip of an interview with Josh. But Treego doesn't seem like the type who would narrate it how you have it explained now?

So I would suggest you either have a TV or a website or something telling the story how it's written now (which is pretty compelling, btw, has a nice, clear mental image of how that story would go down), or you have Treego telling the story more informally.

“Alright everyone,” she said, “Part two of today’s excitement. We have a proposal for you. We’re going to try something.”

Ooh, nice ending! Solid.

~ ~ ~

This is another nice chapter! I really like the action heating up. I got such high hopes of oh my gosh they're almost homeeee but then I remembered you said I'm a few chapters away from the most important chapter, which makes me believe that these poor creatures aren't yet out of the woods, and I'm scared to get as excited as this chapter makes me want to.

I guess my main suggestion might be to make the link a bit clearer between them getting tranq-ed and the second half of this chapter? Because I'm still not really clear on who it is that shot them, or what the point is. You'd think that it would be an enemy who shot them -- wouldn't a friend just be like yo guys come with me? But if it's an enemy, then how'd they end up back with their friends?

I guess I'm just having a hard time understanding how these two halves of the chapter fit together is the main problem.

I think that's all I have for you!

Keep writing!

~Shady 8)

Hiya Shady!

I see what you mean about it not sounding like Treego's voice. The idea would be that he was sort of conveying the news report word for word and raising his eyebrows and stuff as he said it, generally showing his scepticism. I might write this out in real time and see if it works better. I've been taking a while to find a distinct character for Treego and I kind of want him to be a bit of a shitposter, if that makes sense?

Hmmm... I wouldn't necessarily have considered them being reunited with their friends to be a good outcome that would signal they're with friends. They're still trapped somewhere else against their will. Does it seem like that kind a gesture that they're all back together that the government folks would have just come up and offered that, because they were so sure the animals would have said yes? Will play around with this, show continued alarm in the second half that fits better with the tranquilising.

Thanks for the review :D

Hey @ExOmelas I am here to do a review on the next chapter of this story, so I'm really sorry that I'm behind on reading this great book of yours. But I'm back to do some catch. so lets get right into it.

"Alright, freakshows, you are officially off my hands. You have nothing to do with Neuromax… and you never have," he murmured. He made a big show of wiping his hands against each other, with big clapping noises punctuating the motion. "Goodbye forever!"
Now this was not expected I never sure it coming really. You made this guy sound funny when he said all of this. It gives the reader a bit off a laugh. I also did notes something that I can fixes, I no that my spelling is not good but I can help and will help if I can so here I go.

freakshows should be freak shows, but you forgot to put a space in between both words. so simple mistake that any one can make witch is fine. Now after this hole thing with the guy taking you had some great description after words I really think you are getting better as time goes on at writing your work. and as felistia always told me you will get better with age and practice.

"And presumably Crothers was meant to take us there," Dexi said. She did the jerky motion that she used as a shrug. "But he couldn't be bothered, so why should we?"
As chapter go on I'm really getting to no Dexi witch is really cool, everyone of your characters seems to have there on sens of humor about them witch is really nice. That means that there not all the same, witch makes it better for the reader.

"Thoughts, Juliet?" Dexi asked, looking first at one sleek black labrador, then at the other when she realised the first was staring at her in wide-eyed confusion.
Lol I can just see this hole thing playing out, also Labradors are such beautiful dogs, and I think that they fit perfectly for this part. you also have a spelling era that are easily fixed.

realised should be realized, don't worry about that I make that mistake all the time with my spelling, and I make a lot worse and more mistakes then just that. This hole line still gets me though, I can just see it all.

The first thing Dexi saw was just the worst wallpaper. Like, what was Patrick thinking?
Lol this was really funny to read, I really laughed at this one. like you have the ... then this line, so cool and funny to read. I can just imagine Dexi's expression when all this happened.

So this is really all that I can say, I loved reading this lovely peas of writing, and I proms that I will review the next chapters very soon. I cannot wait to hear about what happens next also great Cliffhanger at the end of this chapter. :D

I love how socially aware and observant she is here. It's really fun to read these details, because I can clearly see Chip doing this in my head.

Great job of transitioning from a high-stress moment to a different setting. The humor makes it jarring, in a good way, and it's really enjoyable for the reader.

Usually exposition in dialogue feels really clunky and unnatural, but throughout this chapter, you do a really good job of making the conversation between Dexi and Treego feel really natural and organic, since Treego's just giving out the information that Dexi is demanding and filling her in on all the details. Good job with that; exposition is probably one of the toughest things to write. Just make sure that with all this time spent on dialogue, you're not losing the other elements of the story, such as that lovely attention to detail, or communicating Dexi's thoughts on what's happening. There are a few moments that get a bit dialogue-heavy.

Ah this is a great installment Bisc. I love how you weave humor right into the action, I could see this as like an animated movie or series - it's got a little bit of mystery but there's always those light moments too.

This part I thought was funny: "Her snout bumped into one of the iron bars, and a spark of pain shot up it. The gate hadn't budged an inch. Well, that was fine, she wasn't trying to open it. " --> yep, sure they weren't trying to open up the gate...

Not sure what type of critter Dexi is, but I found this detail to be a bit odd, "Her eyes moved around in their sockets as far as they could go as she tried to encourage the others."

I like the kind of confused an overwhelming amount of action and dialogue as Dexi is waking up, but I think this dialogue chunk got a bit confusing by breaking up what Treego was saying,

Way to end on a cliffhanger! "“Alright everyone,” she said, “Part two of today’s excitement. We have a proposal for you. We’re going to try something.”" --> I think you could indicate whether the "excitement" is more of the cheery or ironic sort - but it does make me want to read on to the next chapter.

As someone who's not familiar with all the characters this chapter was more difficult to get through, but the action was engaging and made sense, and like I said, I think actually make kind of an interesting movie scene too.

Hopefully this was somewhat helpful!

Hey, thanks for the review! There's an awful lot of stuff culminating here but as briefly as I can:

They all started out at Tayburn Zoo. They are secretly talking animals and the zookeeper, Patrick, previously worked for a pharmaceutical company called Neuromax. It was at their headquarters that the animals started talking. Due to something Patrick hid from them, they come take some of the animals to do some further experiments. A little while later a tip-off leads to the whole zoo being raided by the government. A media frenzy happened as Neuromax pretended they had nothing to do with Patrick and he had gone rogue. The animals Neuromax had taken tried to escape but were caught and brought here.

Tl;dr all the animals are finally back in the one place, with the government, who are having to figure out what to do. Since what's been discovered is that any animal exposed to a talking animal for long starts to talk, and they're not ready to release that on the world. Marie is indeed being ironic about the excitement, but the suggestion is that the people in this place have come up with a solution.

Thanks again for the review :D
