I Can't Write Poetry

PreviousNext

If only a poem I could write
Without days of struggle and fight
But my rhymes lack gumption and glimmer
My shine is more often a shimmer
But even there, my woes don’t end
If only these poetry rules I could bend!

Finding a passable simile?
It's like sailing across an endless sea
An attempt to find a metaphor
That, my friend, is a closed, locked door
That worrisome warp of alliteration
Is quite the worst irritation
Personification trumps them all
It has flown away on a mountain too tall

So poets young and old I see
Good luck with future poetry
I’ll stick to stories I know best
And from my poems, I’ll take a rest

Hiddely hey hey. I think it's about time that I review something of yours don't you think?

Okay friend. First things first. You cant write poetry? Ha! I bite my tongue at thee! (just in case that doesn't mean what I think it does and I'm too lazy too google it, sorry if that's offensive.)
But in all seriousness, this was an amazing poem. It speaks so much about all the frustrations that plague writing. Not just poetry. Like, with each line I was either going, "Hey me too!" or feeling like I wanted to punch a wall because I recognize that frustration. And just the fact that your poem could make me feel something like that speaks volumes of both it's incredibleness and your skill as a writer. I already knew you were a good writer, your LRPs are proof of that, but I've never seen you do poetry before and I love seeing it now. Don't ever stop writing!

Aw Thanks!

Oh, and I googled the phrase, and if you were referencing Romeo and Juliet, yeah I think it's supposed to be an offensive gesture XD, but also in the play it was biting the thumb, not the tongue, so that could be something else entirely...

DragonWriter22,

You are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO wrong.

That is one of the greatest poems I have ever read. It is so much better than I could do. You have so many rhymes and everything just flows together. I am going to read all you're other poems now and feel bad that I can not do what you can do. :(

I hope I can learn something from you! Keep up the great work!

I'm glad you liked it and thanks for the review!

Hey there DragonWriter22!
Alex here for another ''review''.
So, first of all. You are an A- Listed Liar!! How dare you say you can't write poetry? I mean, this piece(I before E!) is making me jealous. I wish I had written this.
You can really play with words and my past complain about the poem "I Before E'' that it should have rhymes had vanished with this poem that does rhymes. So, once again, I know nothing about reviewing, really. But, I enjoyed reading this poem. My favourite elements were how you have used figures of speech, without really using them. It is a different type of a poem, it is original.
Once again, you do have some really nice humour. I am going to read "little Sister" now, off for now.
Keep writing such beautiful poems.
Hope you have a nice day/evening!
Cheers!
Alex Blackwell.

Thank you again for the review! This was a fun poem to write.

XD this is hilarious!!!

I like your poem, it is nice and neat. I want you to put emotions and feeling how you felt. So the reader can understand it. Your rhyming it is good and the organization is good also. I like the part in the poem "But my rhymes lack gumption and glimmer
My shine is more often a shimmer" I also like the beginning:"If only a poem I could write
Without days of struggle and fight
Without days of struggle and fight" Your poem is great and neat and have a great flow. Thanks for reading my review and HAPPY WRITING!!!

Thank you for your review!

First of all, I love your poem here. You aren't the only one who has trouble with poetry, but this is definitely a good one. So you have finally jumped over the hurtle that is creating a good poem. And just remember, almost anything can still pass for a poem, so feel free to write whatever you want. :)

I have seen a few of these, and tried them myself, but this is by far my favorite. Great job!

Hahaha, I've seen a few of these, but this is one of the best ones because it's actually funny. I like how you actually use the stylistic devices. :D

BTW, quick overview of YWS spacing: It's weird. As you noticed, it automatically deletes empty lines and double-spaces everything, so spacing stanzas is hard. If you want your lines to not be double-spaced like they are right now, you have to press "shift+enter" after every line except the last line of the stanza. Then there will be a single space between each line of the stanza, with a double space between each stanza.

So, for example, your last stanza would look like this:

So poets young and old I see (shift+enter)
Good luck with future poetry (shift+enter)
I’ll stick to stories I know best (shift+enter)
And from my poems, I’ll take a rest (enter)

Basically, it's counter-intuitive and a bit hard to explain through text.

Thanks for the help! That was really frustrating. Is there any place I can go to find information like that on this site when I'm confused, or is it just best to ask people?

Down at the bottom under every YWS page, under the "Resources" section, there's the Knowledge base. It's got informational articles on practically everything to do with writing and/or YWS. It's a pretty cool resource. Of course, asking people also works. :P

~Heylo...caliginous here~
(yes, "heylo"...don't judge me)

This is a hilarious piece of poetry you got here (I believe it does indeed have the right to be marked as humor, but this is my opinion - felistia has their own views of the poem). The irony used throughout is the main focus of this poem, which is a an excellent idea. Although the writer states they cannot write poetry, they write a poem describing this. This could be interpreted as yet another example of irony, or the author is attempting to demonstrate their horrible skills (which in reality are amazing). Now to get into the specifics...

"A frustration like a stinging bee!"
I like this line, but the simile...just so cliche. I don't know if it was intended to be like this, but I would suggest a stronger, more descriptive simile. Throughout the length of this poem, whenever the author states they can't do something, they end up doing it unintentionally, and very well. This line just doesn't quite fit into that pattern. I would think of an example you could use in place of this simile, but...it's 1:30 am right now where I am, so my brain is pretty much fried (please correct me if I misinterpret anything or if you disagree with me, because I will most likely make mistakes).

Ok,...punctuation
You do in fact use punctuation throughout this poem, which I am grateful for, but there are some instances where you seemed to have forgotten about this poetry. A few quick edits can fix this, so I'm not going to bother pointing out these instances.

You should break up this poem into stanzas. It would be easier to read overall, and would organize the poem.

This is a fantastic piece, and I love the irony! Excellent job :D

Thank you for the review! It has been most helpful! And I did originally try to break it into stanzas, but for some reason the spaces disappeared when I published this. I'll try again. (:

I'm glad I could be of use!

And yeah, apparently there's some code or something you have to do to make those spaces...I don't really know what it is...so just ignore that part of the review :)

Hi DragonWriter, Felistia here with a short review on your poem.
Firstly love the rhymes, have I mentioned I am a sucker for those. I really like the concept you have, it's not deep, your just explaining your frustrations with poetry. I don't really like deep, dark poetry. Well done, it was an enjoyable read, though I wouldn't mark it as a humour poem. It just made me smile at most, sorry.

There are a few lines that stick out rather badly in this poem like (But my rhymes lack gumption and glimmer) and (It has flown far away on a mountain too tall) I would suggest shortening them a bit. It will help the poem flow better.

Over all I liked it, though it was not the best I have seen. I hope to see more of you work so and have a great day\night.

Thank you for the review! And actually, I didn't write this poem about me. I love writing poetry. I just thought it'd be funny to write a poem about someone who "can't" write poetry, but in complaining about it, actually uses all of the styles they claim are impossible.
