i stare at the wall
for hours on end
i am numb
my energy all spent
~~~
the food sits on my plate
having been untouched
i am not hungry
my stomach turns with disgust
~~~
my friends can say anything
and i would laugh
i am not happy
this is all a mask
~~~
you can ask if i’m doing good
i would tell you i’m alright
i am not ok
my eyes won’t close at night
~~~
a single tear falls down my face
but only when i’m alone
i am more than sad
but no one needs to know
~~~
i always have the music playing
it’s a comfort beyond measure
i am very scared
and i don’t feel any better
~~~
it’s the same thing every day
just going through the motions
i am depressed
i don’t understand my emotions
~~~
the moments play in my head
like a tv show on loop
i am anxious
thoughts marching through my mind like a troop
~~~
i let life pass by
people move on without me
i am numb
i cry for help, but no one hears my pleas

Your comment was posted, but it wasn’t long enough to count as a review. Reviews need about four complete sentences (at least 250 characters). Try writing another review that explains your thoughts in more detail — the author will appreciate it, and you’ll earn points for it.
Your poetry is simple too. Maybe you could complicate it. I used to think about what does it do when I wrote around the age of 16. I am 27 now.
i am still young, especially in the poetry world. i have only been writing for a few years, and only started writing for myself in the past year. this poem is meant to be simple, putting lots of emotion into simple terms. thank you for the review, it was very insightful.
You'll get there. I should have used heavy instead of personal in some of the comments. Good luck!
This poem is a very very relatable piece of work. All the details are so intricate and well-placed. Your poem is to-the-point. It says everything directly, and does not wander of off-point. The title itself is very catchy. You have shown everything one feels when one is depressed. We don't feel hungry, we just put up a fake smile, can't sleep at night, stare blankly at the wall, etc. All aspects are present. Overall, I liked it some of my favorite lines were
"This is all a mask"
"My eyes won't close at night."
"Thoughts marching through my mind like a troop." (Nice use of simile)
"I cry for help but no one hears my pleas."
thank you so much!
First and Foremost, I want to say that the feelings expressed in this poem are common descriptions of symptoms of clinical depression. If you feel this way, you should know that as strange as it might seem you are not alone, and you will not feel this way forever. you have artfully captured the experience of living with a mental illness, especially with the focus of this poem. Numbness can feel all consuming at times when you are struggling with mental illness, but there WILL come a day where you will sit in the sun again, and you will FEEL.
With all of that being said, I find the structure of this poem. The short, interrupted, four line stanzas really give us insight into the depressed mind. They give us hints that the speaker in the poem feels that they are trying to feel normal, and fit within societal expectations, but can't because they are suffering. I love what you are doing here.
The only criticism I would have for this piece is the rhyming scheme. There are a couple stanzas where a slant rhyme or no rhyme at all would be a better choice. A good rule of thumb is that Rhyme should always add to the content of a piece, but never dictate it. Meaning, if there is a better word for what you are trying to say, or a word that would work better within the rhythm of the poem, you should use that word instead of rhyming.
thank you so much for the review! <3

This is so beautiful, I love the rhymes and simplicity of it, it's like breaking down the pieces of your life into clear and concise words. I hope that it'll be better for you
thank you so much
This poem is truly moving. I felt that I could relate with many of the struggles mentioned. And I think that even if someone didn't struggle with issues such as these, you gave a vivid look into what it might be like.
My favorite lines were, "my friends can say anything/ and i would laugh/ i am not happy /this is all a mask" because often times I find myself laughing at my friends "jokes" even if they aren't funny, or are really hurtful. There is so much power behind each line, it feels like the revelation of a secret.
Some other lines I felt were extremely well written was, "a single tear falls down my face / but only when i’m alone / i am more than sad / but no one needs to know". It masterfully shows how the subject is struggling, but can't find the worth of letting others know that they might need help.
I also like the lack of capitalization. Personally it makes me think that the speaker is whispering, or isn't very sure of what they are saying, or if they should even say it at all. And I love that. I think it gives a poem another layer.
One thing I didn't really understand was the lines, "i always have the music playing / it’s a comfort beyond measure / i am very scared / and i don’t feel any better". I think I missed the message behind those words, because to me it seems out of order, and maybe unnecessary. But I don't know, things don't always have to make sense, and it's good to have a little abstract language sometimes.
Anyways, I felt waves of emotion cascading through the screen as I was reading. Maybe you relate to these feelings on some level? I think that this was written on a deeply personal level, but maybe I'm just over analyzing it...
Still, this is an astounding piece. I really don't there is much to change here. If you need someone to talk to I'm here!
thank you so much for the review! this poem did come from a deep and vulnerable part of my heart and i%u2019m glad you could feel the emotion. again, thank you.
