Andrew is here to try to review this! I cannot compete with @FireEyes review, but I do like humourous poems quite a bit (in fact they might be the only type of poetry I know how to make/interface with) so I thought I might give this a real fast review to get it out of the green room.
First off, setting it to a poem is already a type of joke. A poem has many expectations and is usually seen as **artistic** so that sets us up for a really easy punch line from the get go.
I like poems who's first line is their name, it feels like a natural flow to me. This line is a joke itself because it shatters the aforementioned sets up of this being a poem, but it also sets up for the rest of the joke.
This is the main heft of the joke, there are a many grammatical mistakes in this section, which in a way are a part of the sloppy joke, but if you do want to fix them, here's a version without it.
Though I admit, capitalizing the proper nouns might kinda ruin the joke.
The main part of the joke is the relatability section of humor + hyperbole, which go well together. First rope us in by making us feel a connection, all of us have had too many cups or drinks in our room. We are laughing because we feel seen.
Now, make the list absurdly long, therefore going to hyperbolic levels, thereby driving the point home that your room has tons of cups in it.
The extra details about each drink gives another layer of madcap, which is a nice touch.
This is the only way to extend the joke, we are entertained, now go somewhere we don't expect, by leaving the bounds of the title, while still keeping within the joke of a room being messy with food items.
I'm not sure if the double mention of bowls is intentional, but its funny. Adds to the sloppy joke.
I'd say, my biggest critique, is though the last line is funny, you could end with something bigger. Something funnier, jump one last level of hyperbole, absurdity, relatability, or madcap, and really leave us reeling. Giving us that funny hit.
Of course, this seems to be based in truth, so it might ruin the joke to fictionalize your way there, but if you could find something honest that would do it, that'd be perfect.
But that's just my two cents!
Made me laugh
Thanks, and keep writing,
Andrew
thank you for the review, it made me smile
Hey lilli! Incoming review!
I'll be taking a more symbolic approach in this review so let's get started!
This drink could symbolize an innate need to stay awake. Chai is innately caffeinated on average with 30 and 100mg of caffeine. The person could be a student, on the edge from exams, trying to stay awake till the crack of dawn, only to need more chai to keep going. It's a vicious cycle of caffeine. I find it quite unusual you specified the place the latte is from. And with some research I find a few different types of drinks, but not a lot of variety. This could be made to symbolize the selective diversity in many brands that are supposed to be diverse. The almond milk I feel is specifically to symbolize the need for lack of cruelty in this world.
Now purple is an interesting colour. It is most associated with wisdom, bravery, spirituality, and royalty. With the name "Powerade" it would suggest you feel power with all these aspects. But be warned, too much power with royalty especially, you can become corrupt. The Powerade bottle is also quiet bulky, representing power. Purple, in side with drinks, is most associated with grapes. Grapes are most associated with wine, a regal drink.
Let me think about the size. Medium is average. And average is most times, overlooked. It shows compassion to pick the overlooked, average guy. From my experience, this particular drink from Wendy's is very sweet, unlike lemons are. And Wendy's is a fast food restaurant. Maybe this person wants to cruise through life quickly, without interruptions, and their craving for sweetness is strong when they might need something sour.
Here's my only critique, "waterbottle" should be two separate words, "water bottle." But this water bottle has ice water in it. Ice makes things cold, so the narrator might feel the cold impact of the world with all these expectations put upon them. And it is interesting how it is your water bottle. The narrator's coldness is being put upon them by themselves. Interesting.
I like how you specified what brand of water they were. They feel like segregation but in water bottle form. When I head Dasani, I think of a prim proper person in high school. Always getting other comparing themselves to them. And strutting through the hallways. Costo brand, on the other hand, isn't as refined. But it still has self-respect. It doesn't come from nobody, it comes from Costco! But it is humble. It could show how these two architypes can become one because, after all, they do the same thing. Hold water.
The descriptive word "brisk" makes me think you've accomplished something. Something of noteworthy achievement. And mango is associated with the tropics. The narrator might have accomplished something of great achievement and decided to reward themselves with a vacation whether that be metaphorical or physical. But it was a quick and cheap vacation because it came from Taco Bell.
And here's a darker twist. Our narrator has accomplished so much that they feel no need for more motivation. They settled but somewhere inside them they still want to do something. The milkshake is runny and goopy, just like someone's attitude when they are arrogant and told to do something else. They want a cheap and fast way to make a new achievement as seen from the milkshake coming from McDonald's but there is no lazy way to success.
And we are at our ending. The narrator has given up. The paper plates are easiest to use because they are disposable. Only one glass cup to carry nothing but air. The narrator has gotten so lazy they cannot even eat all the fries from McDonald's! And a variety of bowls to show the emptiness inside of them.
So, in conclusion, the narrator is a student learning about the possible ways to make the world a better place. They gain as much power and endurance they can to make their dream come true. They are just a normal person who might need something bitter to keep them motivated. But they can't handle the bitter coldness they have put upon themselves! But they rise and conquer! They did what they set out to do! And they took a break, a victorious break but that break soon becomes apathy and jealousness and stubbornness to not do anything else. They resort to cheap solutions and become increasingly emptier and emptier.
But that's all I have for today. I hope you found some of this useful
and funny because I had wayyyy to much fun making this.Have a great rest of your day/night and stay gold. Anyway byeeeeeeeeee<3333ok this review was fabulous and i do not deserve this. this was very interesting to read and it made my day!!
