Thank You

by LuminescentAnt

Thank you

For inviting me to parties where I never fit in

If there’s a point in coming

Thank you

For buying me candy they sell at school; unlike others,

It’s the only bag I get

Thank you

For answering my questions that are actually important

They’re never “funny” questions

Thank you

For not listening to my jokes that apparently don’t

Meet your standards of a joke

Thank you

For not saving me a seat at the Friday lunch table

It’s too big for the whole group

Thank you

For calling us “normal people” but others the “weird kids”

As if anyone knows what “normal” is

Thanks, but I really don’t need a friend who talks

Some might like one

Seems to be nice

Really, I’d like a friend who listens

Is that so hard?

Is this a review?

Hiya! This is Orabella, here to give you a review.

This is just... so sad. You wouldn't expect this from the title, but this sure is a really sad poem.

So, what I get from this is the main character (who I will refer to with she/her pronouns to make it easier to understand, although, please tell me if I get their pronouns wrong) is part of a group of popular kids. Mostly she's friends with one person, and this person is one of the most popular of them all. But she doesn't really belong with them. She doesn't like the same things they like, and they aren't very nice to other kids not in the group. Also, this person is the only one in the group that close to her, and the others are just that: others. This person invites her to parties and gives her candy, and because she's friends with this person the others kind of accept her in the group.

That was basically me just speculating what exactly this could be about. Did I get anything right? What is it actually about? (Unless you'd like to keep it up for interpretation and not have there be a definite answer.)

I absolutely adore this poem. I seriously love all your poems; and although I haven't read all of them, I can tell you're very talented.

Please keep writing! The world needs to get sad because of your wonderful poet skills!

Hi! So sorry I%u2019m replying so late to this, I kept forgetting! Thanks for the review.
Hmmm, that is not exactly what it is about, but that is an interesting interpretation! This tells me a lot about the poem.
If you want to know what it really is supposed to be, here it is: She is talking to a group of people, not one person. And yes, it is a popular group of kids. And you were right about her not liking the same things as them, and that the group doesn%u2019t treat the non-group people the same.
However, your interpretation was a little different, because what I was going for is that she received one bag of candy, but everyone else is bragging about how they got like five or something. And also the group invites her to parties, but no one really talks to her there and she feels kind of lonely.
But I am glad you enjoyed the poem! Thanks again for reviewing!

Of course! I love reviewing! Especially works as great as this. ^^
No problem about at all about the late reply. (I literally don't mind at all if someone is late to reply. Even if they never reply. But it's nice when they do.)
Ahh, I see. I get it now. At least I got a fair amount right!
Thanks again for writing the poem!

Hi there. This is Ina also known as loveissourgrapes and I am here to review/comment on your poem. Oh, and this one caught my eye. Anyways, let's go.

First impressions. When I saw the title, I thought you were thanking a loved one or someone from this site but it is actually depressing once I opened the link to this masterpiece. This reminds me of those kids in coming of age films that struggle with peer pressure and fitting in especially in school. I am a kid who really grew up with no friends but I don't know which one is more harder to deal with, no friends or toxic friends? Although, I have been to a part where I felt like I didn't fit in. With loud music that made me dissociate then, my ears started to ring a sound like someone dropped a mic. But no one dropped a mic in reality.

No one has brought me candy but it that was a very kind gesture but this "friend" you are talking about doesn't know about the important things they should do to you, better than giving a bag of candy. And yes, it is very painful when people don't understand and laugh at your jokes. The lines that talks about not saving a seat really reminds me about those kids in teen movies. It may be sad that kids actually experience this. The line that says, "As if anyone knows what "normal" is" just hurts because it is true.

The ending felt very clean. Asking this people you treated you like this, is that so hard for you to notice that you wanted a friend who is caring, who listens, and who is nice. Overall, this poem was refreshing to read from this. Don't stop writing and have a good day or night!

This made me think, my life could be like this, no friends, just longing for one to be my best friend.

It's a nice bit of work you have here, I enjoyed it but wasn't 100% clear on the first part but that might just be me. Have a good day xoxo

Sounds like you've been through some rough spots! I like this quick poem...especially how relatable it is. I think everyone knows what it's like to be the friend of someone who doesn't exactly care. You hit the spot on relatability. Everyone is searching for a good friend...one that knows how to listen...and not just talk. I hope you find this friend. Good job with the wording. I love it.

Wishing you well,
-Kaia

Hi, sorry for the super late reply, but thank you for your review!
Well, hopefully not everyone has had bad friends, but it's nice that I'm not the only one feeling this.

KaiaJersaga says...

No. You are most certainly not alone in your feelings. There are MANY MANY people who have had bad friends, and I know the pain myself. But, remember, you are a special person. You don't need some one else's label on your forehead to make you think that you are special. You just are. Hope this helps a bit!

Wow. Thank you so much. This really did help, that was really beautiful. I'm sorry you had to go through this too, but going through stuff like this makes us stronger about other things, so it's kinda like un-spoiling yourself? If you know what I mean.

KaiaJersaga says...

Thanks :) And the pain does make us stronger for sure. And in my opinion and as I see here, pain makes people into eloquent writers, too. A LOT of really good writers have had sad pasts or at least a little sad spot in their lives. And they take that pain and write fabulous books and poetry with it. Just amazing!

Hello!
This piece of writing appears to be a poem or a spoken word piece that expresses gratitude in a somewhat sarcastic and ironic tone. The speaker is thanking someone for various things that may not seem like positive experiences, such as being invited to parties where they don't fit in, receiving only one bag of candy, and not being saved a seat at lunch. However, the underlying message is that the speaker values honesty and genuine connection over superficial social interactions.

The final lines express a clear desire for a friend who will listen, which suggests that the speaker may have felt ignored or dismissed in their previous social experiences. Overall, the tone of the poem is bittersweet and contemplative, with a hint of resignation and sadness. The language is simple and straightforward, with a few ironic twists that add depth and complexity to the meaning. The poem seems to be addressing themes of social isolation, the search for authentic connection, and the difficulties of navigating social hierarchies in school or other environments.
