They were running from me; I could sense it. Their paws crunching leaves with each pounce, wings beating overhead, hooves stirring up the forest floor. Good, I thought. Everything ran from me, it was the way nature was designed.
I crawled up a tree and sat in it’s bow. I’d wait here until most of them had cleared, then it would be my land. My haven.
Smoke pushed it’s way through my lips and I laughed. The embers were tickling my innards. Oh but it hurt-- I needed to feel the flames engulf me, it had been so long. Far, far too long.
I could hear the trees worried- the one beneath me shook, and I caressed it’s bark with my palms. “It’s been awhile, old friend.” I whispered just for her, and a wisp of smoke snuck out and hugged her trunk.
“She’s here!” screamed a voice so small and pitiful I wanted to scold it. It was a mouse, panicking a few metres away. “Run!” It called again, “Run! Run!”
I sat up so that my feet were on the branch, perched like a bird. “Run!” I mocked, in my most convincing mouse voice. He froze and sniffed the air, eyes wide, then he was gone. The smart ones knew when to leave. It doesn’t take long for the flames to surround you, and then what? There’s no place to go but up.
As the sun dipped below the hills I could tell most of them were gone, and the fire was starting to burn out of control from within me. I lept to the ground, running my hands through the leaves, and scooped an armful up, then I breathed. It took a minute for the fire to catch up with the steam rolling off my tongue, but when it did the leaves burst into flames and I cast them free. Like blazing butterflies they soared through the twilight sky- little thrill seekers; my children. Most of them fizzled out and drifted down again, but they were just the beginning.
I ran through the forest, the fire racing beside, and inside me. Every inhale fueled it with oxygen, and every exhale set it free, licking up the tree trunks, biting up the dry weeds. The forest lit up. My entire body was in love with the heat and the smoke that swirled around and around
That’s when I noticed it. A sound no louder than a thought. My eyes found it immediately: a bird, limp on the forest floor. I knelt beside it, curious- I’d never seen a bird up close before, they were always the first to flee. This was indeed special. I went to touch it, stroke it’s delicate wing perhaps, but then I thought better, and for one of the few times in my life I didn’t want to burn something. I thought it was dead. It was just lying there, so beautiful, with black feathers that hugged its body so loosely. Then it twitched. I continued to stare at it, completely stunned. It should be dead, I thought. Nothing survived my fires. I wasn’t some urban, toaster-oven mishap, I was a forest fire a dragon a uncontrollable blaze! Things this fragile just didn’t survive my fun.
Is something wrong with me? I wondered, Am I getting old? I shivered and knelt beside the frail creature. “Hello tiny thing,” I said, my voice squeaking from lack of use. The bird’s head flicked toward me, and it blinked. I could tell it wanted to say something, but for some reason it felt it couldn’t. Maybe it thought I couldn’t understand it’s strange tongue.
I reached towards it with a wiry finger, my skin gone back to it’s cold persona. The bird flinched and flapped it’s wings, struggling to get away from me.
“What is wrong with you?” I inquired, more to myself than anything.
It went still and I thought it had died. It’s little breath gone- and I was sad. I was truly sad and disappointed I’d never know what had caused it to survive me. I sighed, turning away from it for a moment, then looked back and- jumped backwards. A man was sitting where the bird was, long wings spread wide.
So this was what a Fallen looked like.

Hi! This is my first review, so I'm sorry if this isn't very helpful. Annnyways, I really liked it. Your writing style is very descriptive and the imagery is on point. You left a lot to be imagined by readers, and it's refreshing, but I just want to suggest a few things. I was pretty confused about who the Fallen was, and since this is a short story I'd suggest maybe a little explanation for this stranger? Also, I'm not quite sure if the main character is actually a representation of fire or some creature with abilities to summon fire or? It's intriguing and I'd love to get to know these characters that you've created. Overall, great writing and descriptions. Can't wait to see what else you'll write!
Congrats on your first review! C: And thank you!
Hey, sunshine!
I hope you're having an INCREDIBLE day today!
This piece was so beautiful, and I feel like you could definitely turn it into a novel if you thought of a good idea! As a short story, though, it's wonderful on its own! I was skimming through the other reviews, and my confusion about the "Fallen" was satisfied. Keep dreaming and keep writing to finish that ending! I want more!!
Still, however, the short story really touched me. I love your use of imagery and diction throughout the narrative. The fire descriptions were fantastic.
I have a question about a part of the story, however, and it'd be awesome if you could better explain it to me!
"It doesn’t take long for the flames to surround you, and then what? There’s no place to go but up." - Wait, why are we going up? Unless you're trying to describe that moment when the flames push you up??
Other than that, you could also work more on grammar!
"Its" is a possessive word, versus "it's", which is a contraction for "it is".
Also, "I was a forest fire a dragon a uncontrollable blaze!"
- There should be a comma after "fire" and "dragon". Also, "a" should be "an" when in front of a word beginning with a vowel. So it should be "AN uncontrollable blaze!"
Keep writing, beautiful!
Thanks for the comment!
The part you asked about, er, the going "up" bit, was referring to heaven/ascending.
What an amazing story! I'm just going to quit with the preamble and get to the review. XD
The beginning held my attention. It made me want to read more. I enjoyed the beginning:
"They were running from me; I could sense it. Their paws crunching leaves with each pounce, wings beating overhead, hooves stirring up the forest floor. Good, I thought. Everything ran from me, it was the way nature was designed."
It made me wonder why they were running away from the Protagonist (Antagonist?).
I also enjoy how you described in detail what the protagonist was doing. I could see in my head what was going on. It was wonderful. The detail that you put into the scenery was excellent. I could imagine the forest, the leaves flying then dissolving into smoke, the way you tell the story is full of detail, but not filled with so much detail that I would skip the entire paragraph.
The character was excellent. The beginning told me that perhaps this character was a little more cynic. When the character mocked the mouse, I knew that she was cruel. Then, watching her fill with joy when everything burned, I knew that she was malicious. But when she found the bird, I thought that perhaps, buried beneath lots of layers, there was some good in her. The ending confused me, but perhaps that's what you were trying to do.
All in all, I REALLY enjoyed this. It was amazing! Keep writing!

P.S. I think you should consider this turning into a novel.
Thanks! I'm Glad you enjoyed it! c:
Wow! This is amazing! I love the amount of detail you put into it! Especially when describing the smoke. The only thing I thing I think you could fix is the last line. Instead of "Fallen" I'd suggest you put "they" and then go into more detail in the next chapter. This has pulled me in and I can't wait to read more!
Happy writing!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! It's not a novel though. It's a short story who's ending I have not found yet.
Oops! I forgot to to check the tags on this! Novel or not, it's still a great story! I'd love to read the ending when you find it!
You dare name it "Fire Starter" but it's not about Pokemon?
Tsk tsk.
O.O i don't remember anything called thaaaat
