.
Chickens are
The smell of dewy grass and black earth,
That is warmed by the sun and fragrant as flowers,
And the little yard bordering the woods, full of mirth,
In the early morning when the little egg-gatherer scours,
The hen-house in search of breakfast.
.
Chickens are
Giggles, chubby fingers full of nuts and seeds to toss,
Among the cluck-cluck-clucking, darting heads and feather flurries,
Stick-feet and bobbing beaks, combing through daisies and moss,
In their little greedy chicken-dance, full of hops and scurries,
Through the hen-house in search of breakfast.
.
Chickens are
The gentleness of muddy-faced boys,
When they gather up their hens in arms pinked by fair weather,
Eyes wide, brimming magic, and the sudden dearth of boyish noise,
In the silence of tiny beating hearts beneath warm chicken feather,
Before mama calls the egg-gatherer out of reverie,
In search of breakfast.

I'm surprised I never left a comment or review as I remember really enjoying this in a first read-through! Here's a delayed review ~
Also if you want, we now have a "chicken" genre that your work can be added to so it's catalogued with all the other wonderful chicken-lit on yws!
There something delightfully gentle about the language of this poem it feels really warm and inviting with the imagery that you used throughout - just painting this lovely scene of chickens and children.
I think this a great example of layered imagery too - where you don't just focus on one image but you really created a full out scene with your words engaging multiple levels of senses from sight, sound, smell etc. That's a really strong poetic technique that gives the poem a more full-fledged feeling to read.
Great use of refrain too to bookend each stanza - it gave it a lyrical quality and also this continuity of seeming to be an encounter that comes stanza after stanza, day after day.
Only small critique I had was that I felt like sometimes the comma at the end of the line oddly broke up the thought - for example:
"In the early morning when the little egg-gatherer scours,
The hen-house in search of breakfast."
For me the comma broke up that sentence into two separate images instead of a single scene. If you were trying to draw out those end of line pauses a little then I'd leave, but it might be worth a second look.
Overall though this was a really comfy read!

Awww! This is an adorable poem. I love the line repetition at the end of each stanza. It was like a little romp through a morning to read. I might be biased because I really love chickens, but I think your descriptions were very on point. And your rhyming oh my god it was so clever. Infinite applause to you and your marvelous chicken poetry.
Aww thank-you! I'm glad you enjoyed it
