Field Notes From Somewhere

FarDusk

NaPoWriMo 2026

Things, places, or moments that pass by,
leaving something behind.

Sometimes they feel like they come from somewhere else.
Other times they feel like memories.

But they always feel off.

pre-napo — silhouettes

wrote this after a really early road trip. probably the last "driving one" for awhile.

Towering silhouettes materialize,
and their featureless kin,
lining the road.

My headlights refuse to touch them
so I watch them
watching back at me.

But I pass by,
because whether they noticed me
or not
can't matter—
they shouldn't be there.

I looked up every flight
as if I could go somewhere

pre napo — doors without handles

the rooms
the halls
and the windows
are all smaller now

but there aren't any handles
on the doors

the same yellow light
and my school desk
and the bland carpet
inaccessible

I have only just noticed
no one's in this room
or the one across
or downstairs

they all stopped gazing into these rooms
and so should I

I looked up every flight
as if I could go somewhere

the forest before waking

the fog and silence of the forest
feel like a blanket,
and the trees look as if
they are slumbering.

I have just awakened
and my watch says it’s 5:27,
but I feel like I could lie
on the pine needles,
as if it were a bed

instead I sit,
trying to understand
the lingering stillness.

five minutes of staring into the fog
and nothing staring back,
five minutes drift by,
feeling like hours instead.

but still, my only thoughts
are ones of sleep,
and wondering
when the fog will leave the forest.

I looked up every flight
as if I could go somewhere

aftertaste

your energy
matched mine somehow
and your voice
filled the room overflowing
all while I
just sat across from you
absorbing

your exit—
when we said
“see you later”
and you closed
your car door,
left the room
feeling too still

I’m replaying our laughs
but I can’t hear them
over this kind of quiet

I looked up every flight
as if I could go somewhere

loop

Fell asleep
to the daytime segments
on news nine
trusting my brothers
would wake us up
when they heard the words
“we have a tornado on the ground…”

I came awake
to all of them asleep
and the same Easter diy segment
from earlier

someone arranging a basket
again, but not really

I looked up every flight
as if I could go somewhere

These poems are really cool! They have this lingering feeling of empty space and mystery to them that makes them distinct.

Towering silhouettes materialize,
and their featureless kin,
lining the road.

This image feels so eerie, as though the speaker is being watched by someone inhuman.

they all stopped gazing into these rooms
and so should I

'doors without handles' is such an interesting idea - the thought that the rooms are empty because other people have moved on, rather than anything specifically sinister going on. The speaker's feelings seem to revolve around loneliness and being stuck.

'loop' is also really interesting - suddenly waking up to a tornado without anyone telling you sounds frightening! And then that is contrasted with the mundanity of an Easter DIY segment, a sense of normalcy that feels uneasy given the situation and the loneliness of being the only one awake.

Excited to see more from you this NaPo!

nothing stuck

read poetry
checked youtube
watched youtube
checked forums
got level forty-nine mage
in some mmo

all from the same desk
same chair, same space

mouse clicks
keyboard clacks
and blue glow
mostly consistent
and the day
passed through me

I looked up every flight
as if I could go somewhere

Ahh! I always find fog so poetic - I really like your description here:

the fog and silence of the forest
feel like a blanket,
and the trees look as if
they are slumbering.

The silhouettes poem is very interesting too - comes across as a very creative take on a road-trip, kind of seen through a poet's lens.

Good luck the rest of the month, you've got this!
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

this usage of short lines throughout your poetry are so effective in giving a punch! much of these word choices & the length of these lines make the poems feel confident in not needing to over-explain itself. it can be hard to heavily use shorter lines in poetry, but all of these poems feel completed and clear, which i find brilliant (and impressive)!

"all from the same desk
same chair, same space"

"mouse clicks
keyboard clacks
and blue glow
mostly consistent
and the day
passed through me"

i love how simply blunt the poem "nothing stuck" is about these behaviors, which i'm sure many of us world-wide can relate to ^^'. the shortness (of lines and length of poem) really emphasizes the self-commentary on seeking for stimulation endlessly without leaving one place, and how time just passes by due to social media/technology consumption.

all of these poems are just so, so great!!

Pebble Lane

A new suburb, lacking people
doesn’t feel hollow—
just without presence

The streetlights illuminating
the artificial lawns and damp asphalt
feels ethereal
yet wrong

The street sign “Pebble Ln”
seems to have been placed there
only in spite

I looked up every flight
as if I could go somewhere

sideways hourglass

when a blank paper
didn't bring me brilliant ideas,
I could only lie on my bed
unmoving, only breathing

ignoring my nightstand clock
I tried weighing the minutes,
but time
already left

I looked up every flight
as if I could go somewhere

same page

the laptop, open,
and the blinking cursor
unchanging

finding ideas
feels like trying to climb a waterfall
and all the ones I think I've got
only feel borrowed—
and wasted on me

I looked up every flight
as if I could go somewhere

What is a poet? An unhappy person who hides deep anguish in his heart, but whose lips are so formed that when the sigh and cry pass through them, it sounds like lovely music.
— Søren Kierkegaard, Philosopher & Theologian
