not a habit

I always look back
after I pass something
even when I know
there’s nothing there

I know this trail and these woods,
I still can’t stop checking
maybe that tree will change
when I look away

I looked up every flight
as if I could go somewhere

everything but the clock is static

it’s the same room,
but it all looks less there,
my bed and drawers
look replaced
and the absence of outside noise,
the closed blinds,
make it feel like
I’m in an npc’s house,
a wanderer intruding

the glow of the nightstand clock
is the only thing still changing

I looked up every flight
as if I could go somewhere

field notes

I kept a notebook
and couldn’t give it a title,
it felt like that
would come at a better time

in it, notes
of pieces that pass by
leaving something behind
and they always felt off

now everything I see
has its own note somewhere

I looked up every flight
as if I could go somewhere

brush against

wallpaper patterned with teapots
and blue vinyl floor
all under the yellow light

outside the kitchen,
a hallway that creaks
and dusty picture frames,
some older than me

it feels like night
but no one is sleeping,
the sun still warms the blinds

it’s like they’re gone
when I know they’re here
in different rooms watching tv

coming through the floors
and up the stairs,
the softened sound
of an old piano

it mingled with the flat hum
of the old fridge,
and sounded like
it was just starting
but then it ended

I looked up every flight
as if I could go somewhere

Spoiler
30 poems achieved! Congratulations Dusk on completing your thread!! A very poetic final moment to end on too

it mingled with the flat hum
of the old fridge,
and sounded like
it was just starting
but then it ended

resonates with how napo sometimes feels! Just as it starts, it hums, and then it's ended! I like the different applications that come from the poem "not a habit" too - whether with relationships, nature, goals - what causes us to have that choice or impulse to look back? 2nd stanza feels like a play on the classic line "if a tree falls in the woods and no one hears it did it really fall?" but with a little twist.

Thank you for sharing your poetry this month, enjoyed being a reader!
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

i like that the title of dr jekyll and mr hyde makes a clear stance that the embodiment of one’s own evil doesn’t get a claim to the doctorate
