xi // a rose by any other name is just as sweet

in the autumn months,
when the sun sets low
and the light bakes itself
into the creases on the side of your wrist
i trace each arc of light,
bending itself across your skin
wondering if this is how
pythagoras felt all those centuries ago,
when he found the answer to his questions.

13. bartender's choice - him

amaretto sour,
your choice of cocktail, sweet,
tart, a gentle snowfall of sourness
remains,
a lingering dream of
what has been.

Spoiler

An amaretto sour is a cocktail made up of lemon juice, amaretto, egg whites, and drops of bitter

14. bartender's choice - her

Gimlet, half and half
never one without the other
two moons in a sunless sky
tethered by gravity
an incorrigble amaglation,
fighting for reconcillation.

Spoiler
A gimlet is a cocktail made up of half vodka and half gin, with lime cordial or juice. Vodka and gin are vastly different spirits and personally speaking...I quite hate it when they're together nor am I a gimlet drinker. But I feel this is a cocktail fit for my character, a simple yet classic cocktail with conflicting spirits to represent an equally internally conflicted character.

And thank you Spark! <3 @LadySpark

Dang! I agree with spark, I love x. It's simple, but poetic and direct and ugh! xi is also super - I would never in a million years think of a way to make pythagoras poetic or romantic, but the image pairs of skin and sky and looking for the connecting line between horizon / people / arms etc. ah love it all. You're really good at knowing just how much to write too so that the images are just swirling meaning and mystery, but not writing too much as to get repetitive or wordy, or overly narrative. Your style is just very readable and engaging!

15. A bartender asks a question.

I forgot his name, not that it was an important one but I still feel bad. The letters dance on the tip of my tongue, ghosts of an almost memory hiding from the light. Tonight, I will call him bartender, again.

Brown hair, eyes, dark like forest floor canopy swimming with untold secrets. Tonight, they remain silent. 'So, what can I get for you Miss?'

I say,
I want a jar of apricots.
steeped in honey, liquid ambrosia
of a thousand summers running reckless.
heat my body on fire, extinguish my soul
with each snap of the teeth that breaks the flesh,
soft, decadent bites of contentment itself
manifested. extinguish my soul and set it afloat
so i may lie under a tree again,
honey dripping from my lips.

Adore that first stanza <33 And using the quote block is unique and fun, plus it's super effective here because there's such a shift in tone/style/emotion when the answer comes. Totally wonderful!

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.
I do not give to you as the world gives.
Do not let your hearts be troubled
and do not be afraid.

16. the other side of the bar

Spoiler
Today's entry is a little mix of prose and poetry,

It's her again, bathed in the low swinging lights of the metal bulbs above. It's a hot night, the summer night air ambulates its way through the crowd, bringing a few strands of her silver hair to the light. Exhaustion sits on her eyelids, a creature peering at me with languid eyes.

Bartender, she says. She doesn't remember.
'Yes, miss?'

And so I ask questions,
searching for the right answers,
but every response is a mirror image
of the one I want.
Always identical, but the wrong side of
the coin no matter how many times
I toss.

Spoiler
Thank you Wolf and Elektra!

17.

Spoiler
Poetry has felt...very difficult of late, so I've been using them as springboard for prose.

home is where the heart is,
but i lost mine years ago
when i handed it to you,
all those years ago.

Amidst tea stains on hands,
midnight whispers on countless
moonlit nights. the windows have
heard more of us, than anyone else in
the world.

- - -

Spoiler
And I no longer remember how we first met. The time of day, or the week, or the month. Only that it was sometime in spring, I remember because you had knocked with petals in your hair. Soft blossom pink that stood out starkly against your hair, and back then, your eyes were of a clearer blue. Like spring water, unfiltered, dissolved from the purest of winter snow.

I had never seen eyes so bright before, I thought you must have been a creature from another planet. And to be fair, I wasn't off the mark.

19. a convenient comfort

Image

you miss me, you say.
of course.
but only when it is convenient,
when it is easy.

you miss me when the tea has gone cold,
and i am there with the kettle in hand
steam gently rolling into your cup.
always a warmth, always nearby.

you miss me when the last train
has left the station, short of breath
you turn, and i am there, engine light
blinking in the dark.

you miss me the same way,
a child reaches for their mother's milk
out of necessity, out of survival.
but your hand does not reach for mine
in your sleep, your heart
does not yearn for mine the same i do for you.
the same way sunflowers
move their whole being
to just be one step closer
to the sun.

my lips remember
the shape of your name.
my hands have comitted
your face to memory,
even if i burn up in ashes
the last remanents of me
will be an effigy of your

21. her

memory
/ˈmɛm(ə)ri/
noun.

Definition:
a memory is nothing more than
a curse on the mind, with no counterspell.
a maladition of the heart,
that is triggered by the tiniest of things.
a cool summer breeze that smells of bamboo,
the flicker of moonlight on a steel windowpane.
a memory is nothing more than
a hungry beast, who gladly feasts
on unspoken possibilities
of what would have been, what could have been,
of all the redemptions we could have made
if only, there was a way.
