Are you ready to plant some seeds for National Poetry Writing Month? Whether you’re a spring chicken just starting out or you’ve spent many NaPo seasons tending your poetry crops, join us for some poetry prep and let’s see what grows this April!
Between March 17 and March 31, complete at least two activities in each of three categories – so at least six total – to earn a shiny NaPo prep badge! The three categories are seeds (brainstorming ideas), water (practice and preparation), and sunlight (spreading friendly poetry cheer!).
Post in the thread below with links to your wall posts, reviews, threads you’ve liked, etc. to show what challenges you’ve completed. You can also post here with any questions you have, or check out our NaPo FAQ to learn more!

Seeds
Let’s do some pre-NaPo brainstorming and plant some poetry seeds!
- Make a wall post telling us the name of your NaPo thread this year and why or how you picked it.
- Gather inspiration by collecting some of your favorite words or themes you might like to write about! Post them on your wall or in this thread.
- Tell us your #NaPoGoals in a wall post, whether it’s 30 poems in 30 days, trying out a new style of writing, or reading other poets’ threads!

- Tell us your favorite poem in a wall post. What do you love about it?
- Do you have a favorite poet, YWS or otherwise? Tell us who it is on your wall and what you like about their poetry!

Water
Prepare your NaPo soil with a healthy dose of water and involvement around the site.
- Attend a poetry jam, or start your own by posting a Writer Feed Pad link in the Poetry Jams club.
- Review a poem on YWS!
- Write a pre-NaPo poem and publish it or post it on your wall, in the forums, etc. to get the poetic inspiration flowing!
- Participate in one of the poetry forum activities around the site – for example, join the Haiku Train, write a poem on the spot, describe a bit of your life in haiku, or contribute to the One Word Poems thread.
- Join or start a discussion in the Poetry Discussion forum!

Sunlight
Spread some NaPo sunshine by supporting your fellow poets! - Like two other NaPo threads. It can also be fun to subscribe to your favorites!

- Leave an encouraging wall post for a poet you’re looking forward to hearing from this NaPo.
- Reply to two wall posts from the “seeds” category (i.e., interact with someone about their NaPo goals, the ideas they’re gathering, etc.!)
- Leave a comment on a poem you love – this is a great way to boost a poet even if you don’t have time to leave a review!
- Join in on the #WhyNaPo hashtag – tell us why you’re participating in NaPo or what you’re looking forward to!
