The Grim Reaper

In Poetry

He comes in the middle of the night
when all the world is dark and asleep
your soul is his to take.
He's standing in the shadows
blending in with the black
unforgiving night.

Your blood curdling screams
that pierce the air
they bother him none.
His own heart was ripped out
in front of his very own eyes
the still beating organ
held up, a prize of sorts.
Sympathy is not his fortay.

While you lay in your own crimson mess
begging him to have mercy
he'll smile,
something truly awful to see.
He'll reach a long, skeletal finger out
to stroke your quickly chilling skin.

With your last breath you whisper,
"Please make it stop."
He replies with an all too eager,
"My pleasure."
~
His next victim awaits.

"He stands in the shadows"

Your rhythm is a little off in this line. Try just saying: "standing in the shadows"

"they bother him none"

Major yowsers! That is so incredibly awkwardly worded. If I asked you if politicians are annoying and you said "they bother me none" I would give you the weirdest look ever. Poetry isn't an exception most the time, you should use the same language and sound of words that you would in a normal conversation.

Ok in the next two lines you use "own" far too close in proximity to each other, edit out one of those out. Furthermore, you should never ever EEVVEERR use "very" in your writing. EVER! A review is the only minor exception... but you shouldn't use it regardless! It sounds bad and breaks flow every single time.

"something trul awful to see"

what? Trul? What are you trying to say here. These are simple mistakes you need to pick up on when reviewing over your poem

"to stroke your fastly chilling skin"

firstly it's "quickly" and secondly you can surely use better imagery and vocab that just "fastly and chilling." Look up these words in a thesaurus if you find yourself using boring words.

Ok I like the general idea of your poem, although I have never liked the idea of a grim reaper looked in only a cruel light. My favorite interpretation of him is in "The Book Thief" in which in narrates the book. One of the best books you'll ever read I guarantee you. There isn't much pizzazz to this piece that makes it really jaw dropping amazing. Do a little polishing and you'll be looking good for this piece. Let me know if you ever need a review. Keep up the good work!

Very nice imagery. And it flows very well. It also gives a hint on Grim's back story. I only noticed one error which was "trul" instead of truly. Overall, good job!

Halloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I reviewed someething of yours a few days ago, I believe! I like this piece better.
This is very creepy and good and it makes you sort of think 'I don't want to go to bed tonight' because it's scary.

Your blood curdling screams
that pierce the air
they bother him none.
His own heart was ripped out
in front of his very own eyes
the still beating organ
held up like a prize of sorts.
Sympathy is not his fortay.

This whole verse has really good rhythm and subtle rhyme. It's properly poetic.
I also really like the way you've said about his heart being ripped out. It makes us wonder about the Grim Reaper and what happened to him. I think you've a slightly different, more vengeful Reaper. He doesn't take those who are already dead, he kills living people.
Something I don't like is your last line. I like the My Pleasure line, but I think you should leave it there and not have the He is the Grim Reaper. The title tells us that, and anyway, we've already gathered it from the poem.
This is a really nice poem though. Well done!

Hey, Silver here with a review!

First of all, let me start by saying that I think this poem has a lot of potential. :) To make things easier, I'll make a pro/con list for you.

Pros:

I really like the concept of the grim reaper having his heart ripped out right in front of him; it's unique and maybe gives a hint as to why he's so cruel. I also really like these lines:

"the still beating organ
held up like a prize of sorts.
Sympathy is not his fortay."

I like the way you describe the way the heart is like a prize, but I think it would be more effective for you to cut out the "like"; turning it into a metaphor instead of a simile would make it stronger, I think. So it might read something like:

"The still beating organ,
held up, a prize.
Sympathy is not his fortay."

I also like that last line, it's simple, but has a certain edge. It packs a punch.

The graphic imagery towards the edge of the poem works nicely too with the dark and gory mood you have already established. Your word choice works very well; using words like "crimson", "stroke", and "chilling", are a nice touch.

I loved the ending as well, it was unexpected (to me, at least), and creative.Leaves the reader shivering, and just a little bit more disturbed than before they read it. Well done.

Cons:

I agree with the reviewer below me: expand on the idea of the reaper's heart being ripped out right in front of him. Put more details in. How did he feel? I woud suggest that you even go as far as to make it the focus of the poem, make it the reason he has no sympathy for his victims.
In addition, I don't think you neccesarily need to title this piece "The Grim Reaper", or put "he is the Grim Reaper" at the end of the poem. Not only does it sound out of place at the very end, it disrupts the flow and takes away some of the edge. Put a few more subtle details in, maybe a dark hood or a scythe, and have fun letting the reader figure out what the poem is about-that's half the excitement of reading poems. :)

In summary, I thought your poem was creative and had a very distinct, dark tone. I hope my review was helpful. Keep writing! :)

The enjambment present in the first three stanzas flows nicely with the detailed metaphors. The third stanza, fourth line down, has the mispelling "trul" which I'm pretty sure is meant to be "truely". Overall the imagery adds to the macbre feel of the grim reaper. I think it would be cool to expand on the second stanza going further into the Grim's story of how he saw his heart ripped out in front of his very own eyes.
