An Account of an Awkward Flower

E - Everyone

In Other Poetry

I started writing this out of frustration at myself, but in the end, it ended up being comical. My motto is "Laugh at yourself before others do; it'll hurt less." :P Hope you enjoy; if so, press 'Like' and leave a comment or review!

How utterly ridiculous it was of me
To think that I could function in society.
They say, “There’s naught to fear!
But please, have a chair, dear;
Sit in the corner, out of sight.”

So alone I’ll wait through the night,
And ignore the pain that tries to bite.
Into the background I’ll blend,
And wish for a single friend,
While turning others away with a jest.

I think it really is for the best,
For I am not a refined guest.
Over words and furniture I stumble;
Which is good, for it keeps me humble.
I find that I often miss the beat.

And when it comes time to eat,
Well, that’s a whole ‘nother feat.
I try to get the food to my mouth,
But half of it always goes south.
I’m scared of using a cloth napkin.

My host will need to take aspirin
After all that is bound to happen,
For which I feel I need to atone,
When I come to ‘grace’ their home.
We bid goodbye, both with a cringe.

I think that rather than lurk on the fringe,
I should stay at home and binge
On all of my lovely books
In one of my favorite nooks
With tea and a cat for company.

oliverIsOrange here-- reviewing and mewing (meow meow)
The last stanza was my favourite. This was a well thought out poem. I can relate to a lot of it, and I'm glad it was written. Do you mind if I show it to my English teacher? I will link it to your page and everything, I think she'd really enjoy it! Great aabbc pattern too. The title reminded me of, "Perks of being a Wallflower" but the poem in itself was nothing like it. It was quirky, fresh, and to the point. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to read it.
I can't really find anything to nitpick. I'm not very experienced with reviewing poetry, and I think you did an excellent job using figurative language.

A fantastic read! :)

Thank you so much for the review! And I am honored that you would even think of sharing it with someone.

In thinking of the title, I had "Wallflower" in mind (though I've never read the book you mentioned; only heard about it), but I figured that it was overused, so I changed it a bit. Glad you picked up on the connection! ^_^

Again, thank you SO much for this review! Encouragement is always wonderful. =)

Hey! Great poem! I really enjoyed it and found it very comical in places. I particularly liked the lines:

I try to get the food to my mouth,
But half of it always goes south.

I just thought it was clever rhyming and fitted in well with the poem.

In contrast to what Purple said below I actually loved the final stanza! It made me smile because it is exactly what I would rather do as well! Perhaps it can only really appeal to the people who actually do binge on books with their cat and a cuppa! :) (and I didn't relate book binging to bulimia, haha!)

On the whole a really enjoyable poem with a final stanza that I just adored!

Thanks so much for the review! ^_^ And cats are amazing; people are complicated. o_O

Hey! Rose here!
Great poem. Love it. Honest, funny :)
I think we've all been there, especially with the furniture stumbling :)
Keep up the good work!
Rose

Thanks so much!

Hey there! Purple here to give you a review! Let's get started.
This is extremely relatable in my opinion with a great rhythm and a flexible rhyme scheme! The only thing that would make everyone else absolutely love this is strong imagery (since that's a big thing on yws) but I don't mind. I think lots of people feel this way and it got increasingly more personal toward the end, and although I'm not rather fond of the last paragraph, I like how you transitioned throughout this piece. Just a few tiny nitpicks that might be personal preference but I will point them out anyway.
"And simply wish for a friend,"
The flow in this was a little off, have you read this out loud? I would edit this to
"And wish for a single friend,"

"I think that rather lurk on the fringe"
This was a little unclear. Did you mean "I think that (I/this/?) rather lurk(s?) on the fringe"?
I just seemed weird to me.
Other than those things, this is fantastic! Keep up the great work and have a nice day!
~Purple

Hey, thanks for the review!

It should have been "rather than lurk".

As far as the rhythm with "And simply wish for a friend", I personally see hear no problem with it. I do like the way you suggested, though, so I'll change that.

Thanks again for the review! =D

Oh, and what didn't you like about the last stanza?

Purple replied · Mar 16, 2014

Oh that just seemed a little out of place with a weird subject change and an image of bulimia around books and a cat and it just seemed odd to me haha

Alrighty then. :P
