everything just stops, i don't want you like a best friend

by herb

he says not to worry

and then reads me a passage

of romeo and juliet.

 .

i can't help but fall for him

harder and harder, listening to him

say "wherefore" is enough

for me to die of romance.

.

i daydream of wrapping my arm

around his shoulder and holding him like i'm

gripping onto a rope, climbing.

.

sometimes, his breath is short

and words are blunt. another slip up,

he claims, but i swear

i almost heard him say

he loved me.

.

i'm too young to know

anything yet, but this is

almost as heavenly as clinging

onto an angel.

.

gripping his wings

as he laughs, sighing as

he looks at me, yearning for

him to just tell me those three words.

.

sailing through his aquamarine eyes,

running through his wheat field hair

and the dip and curve of his shoulders.

.

spectating as he tells me

the meaning of life, he sits there as i

contemplate love and ethics.

.

i told him that all someone

had to do to take my heart was

to give me a sweet, and he said

that he'd bake me a cake,

his specialty.

.

he's already taken my heart,

but i think that would seal the deal.

Beautifully tender, romantic and youthful. It feels like this poem captures the intensity of a first love. The reference to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in the first stanza kind of leads me to believe this love ended/will end tragically. There is a warmth in the poem, shared moments between two people who are just forming a connection, and it creates a dreamlike tone.

this may be me reading too much into it, but with these lines:

i told him that all someone

had to do to take my heart was

to give me a sweet, and he said

that he'd bake me a cake,

his specialty.

The speaker says all they need to fall in love is a sweet, yet the man says he will bake her a cake. In my country, we wouldn't describe a cake as the same as sweets (haribo etc) and so to me, it felt as though he was promising her something more, a large act of romance, but it's not actually what she asked for. Like love bombing or promising too much that he won't be able to deliver. This may just be what i interpreted and not your original intent!

Ohhh...First love is a memory that stays hidden in the heart, a soft and sweet whisper that never fades. It begins with a first crush, a fleeting feeling that makes the heart flutter at the sight of someone special. Every glance, every smile, every little touch feels magical, as if time stands still. But with that magic comes a quiet fear—the fear of not being able to speak the three words that hold so much weight. We wonder, as time passes, if life would have been different if we had only said them. Yet, those moments remain etched in our minds, a sweet, secret memory that we hold dear. Though the words may have gone unspoken, the feeling of first love stays with us, forever a precious, unspoken treasure that only we truly understand.

Think of all the beauty still left around you, and smile.
