The year was 1983. Sixteen year old Brandy Winston was at the beach with her family, on a summer vacation in none other than Moon’s Beach. Brandy sat on the sand, her blond hair blowing in her face as the ocean waves crashed by. She liked the beach, but she wished that the sun wasn’t so hot and that the sand didn’t get everywhere. She could feel the itch of it crawling through her pink bikini, the sand of it seemingly determined to make her body as soft tree bark. Combined with the smell of the salted ocean and the strong, overpowering scent of sunscreen slathered on her and she was just about ready to go back to the hotel.

But her parents wanted her to stay with them for “family time”, so she could not leave. Not until they were done.

Brandy looked down at sea shells, taking in the colors that seemed to shine with the sunlight. That was one thing she found beautiful about the beach. The way that the sea shells looked like glittering gems tucked in the folds of a blanket, waiting to be picked up. Perhaps she would do just that.

She reached out to grab one, but then, she heard it. Faint at first, then seeming to rise with the waves. Nobody else reacted, as if it were only for her. A song that was more than that. It was delicate and dangerous, beckoning her to take hold on the rhythm and never look back:

“So long I’ve been all alone

This heart of mine is all bone

But a bone heart still beats

A barren heart still loves

In the void of the ocean

I wait by my lonesome

Won’t a fair maiden heed my call?

And lie here with me, side by side?

There’s more to life

Than fearing how you’ll die

Love waits for no one but the right

No one but the ready

And I’ve been more than ready

For your sweet kiss”

Brandy didn’t think. Her body had moved on its own towards the water, swimming to the melody’s notes. Her parents didn’t notice and she didn’t care. Whatever it was that called to her needed her and how could she ignore such a song? So full of yearning the voice-it sounded like a boy-was. She knew that feeling. She dreamed of finding true love, of finding somebody to trust indefinitely, someone to pour her whole heart out to. That was what she was supposed to do, right? That’s what her friends did. That was what the girls in the movies did. So why didn’t anyone love her like that? Was there something undesirable about her? Something she could not see? What?

The boy was pleading to her and she could not ignore him. So on she swam until she was floating somewhere in the middle, far from the shore, in an infinite void of dark blue and thick, white veins.

There was a cave just five feet away from her. It had many gray and misshapen rocks tumbling on top of each other, dead fish bones scattered on them. A teenage boy lay there, his skin as white as the wave bubbles. His silver hair reached down to his shoulders, dripping with water. He had green eyes darker than the algae, purple and blue-toned marks surrounding them as if he were sick and starving. His torso almost looked translucent, his claws clicked on the rocks. But what caught Brandy’s eyes the most was the bottom of him.

He had no legs. In place of them was a long, misty-blue fish tail, the ends of the tail slightly ripped, as if he had been attacked a few times by something else. Maybe by something else in the deep.

Brandy never saw anybody like him before. Somebody so deathly and yet, his decay had made him glow all the more enchantingly. She wished that she were closer to him, so that she could watch him, hold him, hear him sing forevermore.

His eyes noticed her and he stopped singing. The boy seemed to study her, waiting for something, searching for something. She stayed completely still, not daring to move away from his sight.

After a few minutes, his cracked lips quirked up into a smile and he jumped into the water. She didn’t have to wait long before she felt his arms wrap around her legs and pull her into the waves, his silver hair flowing around his face like a cloud.

His hand caressed her cheek as he brought her closer…closer…closer still…

Brandy was fully in his embrace. She held on tight to him, her legs wrapped around his tail. A boy wanted her. A boy loved her. She couldn’t leave him. Never. He needed her and she, him. So she would stay. Even if it meant that she never got to see her parents a-what?! What was she doing? She couldn’t leave her parents! Why was she in the water? She couldn’t swim, she-

Teeth sharper than a knife sunk into her neck, pain like the time she twisted her ankle when she was eight years old, except fifteen times worse. Brandy’s scream was muffled under the ocean’s swirling surface.

He was truly a boy who’d never let her go.

Good afternoon creeper 😊
Ohh Siren’s desire now, let’s goo!

Hmm if you write “none other that Moon’s Beach” I kinda expected the next sentence to be abt what is so special abt the place, that’s the expectation you create within the reader when you use a phrasing like that ^^
And maybe you could have described the beach a little bit more, maybe what features are of particular interest to her other than just the annoying sand?
(Kinda like you later do with the seashells, that is nicely done!)

She reached out to grab one, but then, she heard it. Faint at first, then seeming to rise with the waves.
Wow!! I think this is one of the best sequences you’ve written so far. I just love how these two sentences work together so well and how you worked in the rising with the waves (who come and go) – Yes let me obsess over singular sentences; it’s my fav pastime =D

Wellll given the content of the song, no wonder only Brandy can hear it. I guess she counts as a maiden ready to be entranced to alleviate that loneliness XD

Hmm maybe it would have worked even better if you described how Brandy was lacking in love in the first part. Or, if she had never once thought about love and the SONG is what put this sudden longing into her head, maybe you could have focused on how CONTENT she has been and how she wasn’t really lacking for anything …until she heard that song that is =D

until she was floating somewhere in the middle,
Idk if you can rly say that when you mean… the water? Like… what even is the middle?

I do rly like how you describe your siren! I just think maybe “the bottom of him” is a bit too awkward? Because the rest of the descriptions are really really good!

I wish Brandy would have commented on the fact that he grabbed her LEGS instead of anything else of hers….

Oh I also love the sudden realization that she cant even swim! (That makes me wonder how old she is and WHY her parents left her alone at the beach??? Not even watching her?????)

Aiii what a final line XD

I’m glad you enjoyed this and thx for the advice! She’s sixteen btw.

The siren LOOKS like he’s sixteen but he’s not. He’s immortal and much older.

Hi! Dragon here to review this enchanting tale. I saw it in the green room and wanted to check out one of your stories that isn't full on horror theme, lol.

That was straight dragon FIRE

You did a great job introducing the character and setting for this story. You used a variety of senses, touch, smell, sight, etc. It really helped me make a good mental image for the rest of the story to take place in. (I also looked at your character design so that helped)

The song was both chilling and enticing. I could totally hear a siren singing that.

We all just want to be loved and accepted for who we are deep down, don't we? I think playing on that is great. Though whether it is her loving him or him loving her, I think both are valid lures.

I like the fact that the song has a bit of a lasting effect such that she doesn't truly wake up until it's already too late.

Some loose scales

the sand of it seemingly determined to make her body as soft tree bark.
This sentence didn't make total sense to me. Perhaps you meant "as soft as tree bark"? The 'it' is referring to the beach I assume, but it feels off because you used 'it' to refer to the sand itself earlier in the same sentence. I feel it could be worded better but it's fine as is.

I may be a little nitpicky with this, but the second and third last lines of the siren song both end with 'ready.' I don't know much about music or poems but I think it usually has to be different words for pairs of lines. It can be hard to find the right ones though.

When Brandy finds the Siren's cave I had a little trouble with the mental image. It says they were far from shore, yet there was a cave? I assumed it was an island, but I would have loved if that was mentioned as part of the description.

I enjoyed the final scene but when she woke from the spell and mentioned that she couldn't swim it made me pause, wondering how she got so far out there if she couldn't. For me this took me out of the moment, so I think it wasn't necessary to include. However, it did add to her panic in a good way so I'm torn about whether this was good or bad to include.

As mighty wing soar overall

This was a great character backstory and a good short story on its own. The events flowed well and I was able to follow along easily. I felt like I got to know this character (Brandy) quite well in a short time. The last line was also a great finisher.

Final wisdom of the dragon friend

For a writer specializing in horror, I didn't know if I would enjoy your stories since horror isn't my thing, but I enjoyed this one a lot. Even if it did end in her death, I still found the story to be well told and I liked Brandy as a character.

May blazing dragon-fire light your path and ignite the flames of your inspiration.

She only could swim because his song gave her the ability to. When she woke up from it that ability was gone.

Thx for reading!
