I met a friend today
We haven’t seen each other since that day in kindergarten
When I said goodbye
While holding closely tight
To memories that just might
Be the last ones shared together.
He asked if I was doing okay
We stopped by a cafe and chatted for hours and hours
Catching up on life
Sharing current plights
Giving some advice
And reminiscing about the good ol’ days.
We said our farewells as we departed
But before going home I took a train to the beach
And looked at the waves
Coming and going with grace
My feet leaving a sandy trace
That will remain until the ocean swallows them.
It was honestly nice
To meet someone who in the past had been an integral part of my life
But when I came back home
After a midnight roam
And stared at the sky alone
Stars looked like friends long gone.
They had been so bright in my life
Twinkling and shining every day
But once we’ve moved past by
They start to flicker and fade away.
I can cry about it
I have a right to do so don’t I
But I’ll also smile about it
Because these memories we made
Etched into my heart little by little
Carve out a friends-shaped heart
That reflects all of them in my own little way.
So it’s okay if the friend I met today
Never appears in front of me again
He’s already made an impact on my life
That my heart alone will never forget.

This well-written poem has a beautiful meaning and it explains really well how it hurts when you grow away from a close friend, but just because they disappear from you, it doesn't mean the memories you've made with them are going to be sad pasts.
I think that these lines are absolutely beautiful. It's a beautiful and warm way to say that even if you are allowed to feel down, you'll still think positive and remember the good times in a happy way.
I definitely agree with you. In my opinion, I think you did a great job describing how friends are bright and valuable like stars, and when friends slowly grow apart, it can feel like they are fading.
This sentence was an amazing way to finish up the poem! I really agree with this sentence now that I've read this poem. Thank you for making me realize this beautiful message!<3
I felt a lot of warm feelings when I read this.<3 The way you wrote this poem is so beautiful and relatable. I think you are a great poet and I'll continue to read your poems!
Hello ToastK! I saw this in the green room, and the name stood out to me.
This reflective tone of this poem is something that I really enjoyed. It gives it a tone of something more than just meeting an old acquaintance; it is more about how transient people can be in life.
First, I liked the beach image that was used:
It was a very nice way of using the image to illustrate something similar to the memories - people leave their traces in this world, even though time erases those traces.
Of course, the image of the stars had to be my favorite one in this poem:
This is a very nice comparison that works well with the general tone of the poem.
Finally, I enjoyed the fact that the poem did not end on a completely sad note – the poet acknowledges that even if the friend does not come back, the memories were worth it.
The only thing that could have been improved a bit is the use of some of the rhymes, which seem a little awkward. For instance, "We stopped by a cafe / Catching up on life / Sharing current plights" feels a bit awkward because "plights" is an unusual word in that context and seems mainly there to rhyme with "life."
Another line to look into might be, "Because these memories we made / Etched into my heart little by little." I believe that although retaining the rhyme would be good for the poem, the wording is less natural compared to other lines.
Otherwise, you have a great voice and way with words. I look forward to seeing more from you!
I can relate to the feelings of the speaker in this poem. It does hurt when the friends one was on such good terms with during childhood become strangers over time. It can be easy to befriend one's peers in school, but once everyone grows up, things become much different from before. Friends often drift apart after life grows tougher along with age, but as long as one doesn't cling to past regrets, even past friendships can still feel precious despite fading away. I really like how you've written this poem!
