I Swear I’m Straight! (PrideMonth Poem)

I know how it looks.

But on God, if I may,

Even if you think that way,

I swear I’m straight.

I go by he/him pronouns.

Look, I support this flag not-seldom:

The Blues, Reds, Greens, the Spectrum.

Even if, I swear, I’m straight.

Even my family thinks the other way.

I may have kissed a boy so what?

It was an accident and we’re leaving it at that.

Please, I swear I’m straight.

The more I deny, the more I’m stuck.

No, don’t take me out the closet, I wanna stay in here!

You might be fine with it, but socially, I’ll die from fear.

Just believe me! I swear I’m straight.

Look, may god fly a bird crashing to my window,

If I was, for sure, gay-

*Thud* That was just a coincidence… but hey,

I swear I'm straight.

Even my boyfriend thinks I’m gay. Well, he’s just dead wrong.

Because if I was gay,

Why did we kiss that night in May-

wait…

Uh, I swear I’m straight.

But it’s okay to be gay.

It’s okay to be Bi.

It’s okay to be Trans, Aro, Ace, Aro/Ace, Lesbian, Queer, or Pan.

Just know that no, I’m not pansexual.

I never felt a thing for frying pans-

Wait, that's not what it means?

Oh… Pan just means liking someone,

Regardless of gender, just because they’re cool?

Then maybe I’m pan.

This poem left me giggling in my knickers. It is almost pride month (is it in June or July, I always get confused) and this is the perfect poem to celebrate it! I know for me, I have always, always had to be straight around my family members, especially my mom, even though I am bisexual. This poem as it gets closer to the end the narrator begins to realize that not being straight is okay.

I want to make mention that I really like how everything flows almost like water in your poem, the rhyming that you use is just so beautiful.

''Even my family thinks the other way.

I may have kissed a boy so what?

It was an accident and we’re leaving it at that.

Please, I swear I’m straight.''

At the beginning on the poem, the narrator says almost calmly that he is straight. But now in this line, it's almost as if he is pleading, and telling everyone that he is straight. I feel like that's a common problem among people today. They want to convince everyone that they are this sexuality even though it is okay to be whoever you want.

''No, don’t take me out the closet, I wanna stay in here!

You might be fine with it, but socially, I’ll die from fear.''

Being accepted from other humans in society is something that some of us want to achieve. By the narrator saying he'll die from fear is someone finds out that he's not straight. I think that's really sad, and I wish society would accept all individuals regardless of who they are.

''Just know that no, I’m not pansexual.

I never felt a thing for frying pans-''

Well, I had quite a chuckle reading that part. Frying pans and pansexual :D

''Oh… Pan just means liking someone,

Regardless of gender, just because they’re cool?

Then maybe I’m pan.''

I'm glad the narrator came to the conclusion that liking anyone regardless of their gender sexuality. I'm glad some stories have happy endings.

Very good poem friend, and I hope you have a good day/night/afternoon/dawn.

As others have said, I love the humor you use in this poem so much! It is probably the funniest poem I have read here in a long time, haha XD I love how you go through all of these different senses and visual experiences that you and others have experienced to capture this feeling of self image and almost... denial? Not exactly that but Ic cannot think of a better word. Oh also, fantastic words with these rhymes and keeping the poem organized, it was so well done!!

Even my boyfriend thinks I’m gay. Well, he’s just dead wrong.

Because if I was gay,

Why did we kiss that night in May-

This part made me laugh so hard. Please write more poem like this soon XDD But anyway, I liked how this sense of denial increased throughout the poem until we finally get you questioning yourself here. Its like this build up filled with comedy, until we reach this peak of sort-of acceptance, which leads us into:

I never felt a thing for frying pans-

Wait, that's not what it means?

Oh… Pan just means liking someone,

Regardless of gender, just because they’re cool?

Then maybe I’m pan.

This brilliant ending XD I love the pan play on words that you used. It was a lovely way to end. I am totally late, but happy pride month to you! Keep writing!

Your friend,
Ellie

This has me SCREAMINGGG laughing, oh my gosh. Great humorous poem, wonderful job!

This was a beautiful poem, I love it so much.

Quite possibly my favorite part. It's okay to stay in the closet for as long as anyone would like, no matter if days months or years! But it's never okay to just out someone, even if the outer thinks its safe. You manage to put the words and sentence together wonderfully, and the ending is sweet.

Hello Hello I hope you dont mind me popping in with a quick review. This might be a short one but I hope you will enjoy my thoughts nonetheless. Let's get into it, shall we?

Overall This was fun and a cool way to end off pride. Although I cant help but read this in tune to the original song and won't be able to get Bo out of my head for the rest of the night. ( I am a low-key Bo fan probably not as in-depth as others but do find myself coming back to some songs. Mostly inside as those are great songs outside of being funny.)

I found the message of the actual piece itself to be very relatable to many queer folks. There always seems a moment when you have to go Oh! Oh! it all makes sense now. It can be easily resolved for some and for others, it can be a longer process that does have some denial to it. As showcased in this piece in a very amusing and lighthearted way that I appreciated.

A lot of media focuses on the struggles that come from finding your identity and sexuality. However, I feel the more messy and comedic elements in the frankly messy often confusing journey that is realizing you might be in this community.

So Good job and good luck with doing word crimes ( Not real crimes mods ) And being gay. As always Keep writing and remember to stay hydrated!

Thank you for your review~
As a totally straight%u2026 person%u2026 (haha, I really should leave this closet) I always felt that the portrayal of the lgbtqia community has really come a long way, and I appreciate that you like my work as well! Cheers to the (few) remaining days of this colorful month!

This is such a cute poem! (I actually relate a bit, I present as straight but feel the same way about liking someone regardless of gender. Perhaps I am pan too lol)

I like how everything essentially devolves from "I'm straight" and slowly turns to a self-realization of the speaker's identity. Your sense of humor totally comes to the forefront here! The bird flying against the window got me, lol.

Happy pride month, Toast! (。•̀ᴗ-)✧

Note - I ALSO LOVE BO BURNHAM TOO

Lol glad you liked it Noah! Happy pride month to you too!

(Also, YES BO BURNHAM IS AWESOME!)

I think gender is not a reason to dislike someonetunnel rush
