Deceptions

PreviousNext

Someone told me once,
hell is where demons roam.
I think he mis- pronounced Earth.

Streets swarming with beautiful masks,
malice and hate so expertly concealed,
you'd be deceived, thinking it real beauty.

Get close, get close,
and watch these masks peel away;
by then it'd be too late.

It is the same crowd here and there;
only at least in hell,
all is as it appears to be.

Hi, firstly I loved this concept. I love the idea of hell being our time on Earth because lets face it, everyone sins. And others' sins hurt us. I think it's very interesting how you mentioned the streets swarming with beautiful masks. I think there's so much depth in just that one line.
Beautiful faces, so how could you expect them to do such horrid things?

This is exactly what you've mentioned in the next line, that the malice and hate are so expertly concealed. I think this line as well holds so much power, and weight. We are beings of sin, and sometimes we are malice and hurt others purposely. So I think comparing the beautiful faces to the sins they commit shows their true colors. I think that's a very bold and important distinction. It reminds me of the phrase, "Not all the glitters is gold."

The last stanza really got to me, "at least in hell, all is as it appears to be." Wow. I think it's not only very powerful but very accurate as well. Why would someone wear a mask in hell, you're already there. The masks are presented on earth and we're all just trying to run from something.

I think this was an amazing poem, and extremely insightful. I loved this!

Thank you so much....! I'm glad you liked it :)

Hello there !

Well honestly, now I realise how much I have yet to learn from my fellow writers like you on writing a piece like this.
I like that it is not too long. I like it that you kept it pretty simple and did not over loaded it with heavy synonyms. That's the beauty of your work, simple and elegant.

And of course the theme of the poem, the absolute reality. I actually loved the beginning. Mis-pronounced creates the sense of earth being a synonym for hell or vice versa.

A job well done.
Cheers mate :)

Wow! Thanks a lot...you just made my day!

Interesting!

This is my very first review, so take it with a grain of salt~

For one, I'd say that some parts are a little too vague, such as the part of it being too late once the mask has been peeled.

While the beginning did seem a bit overdone, the last part convey the feelings and thoughts behind this poem pretty well - all is at is appears to be down there.

Well done, relatable and concise (:

Thank you for your amazing review. I never realised the beginning was a bit too much. I'll keep it in mind next time. Again, thanks a ton!

This is my first review in ages, so see with me if anything sounds a bit off or something. I quite like this piece of work. First, it does the clichéd thing - comparing earth to hell in terms of all the evil and hate that takes place here, but then it quickly jumps up a notch and makes earth out to be even worse than hell, as earth is deceptive. It pretended to be all peachy, and by the time we see behind the masks, it's already too late.
The poem makes me ponder what "too late" means. Too late for what? Is the persona himself also too late? I look forward to reviewing more work from you.

Thank you for your amazing review. Well, I kinda wanted to say that by the time we realize people are fake, we're already too much in love with them to pull ourselves away from them.

ah. but I'm glad you didn't say it. Better to let the "too late" be as vague as it is now, so each reader can look at it his own way.

hello :) just came by to read...
I liked this one. It perfectly describes the negatives of earth. You got to really show the wolf under sheep's clothing of this world we live in.
Thanks for the good read :)
