Avery Trent - Chapter 4 (Ribbits and Rain)

In Avery Trent

Avery and Jason were riding, cramped, in the backseat of less-good Avery’s dingy little car. After another screaming tantrum from Avery, followed by a second bout of handkerchief swinging, Jason had been able to calm him down and explain that he was perfectly safe.

“But you just said that I was in danger here!” Avery had protested, stomping at less-good Avery as if he were a feral animal attempting to join one’s picnic.

“Yes, it’s dangerous for one to meet their less-good version, but only because they behave like a madman. Much,” Jason grabbed Avery’s handkerchief and crammed it into his pocket, “like you are.”

Wide-eyed, Avery stared at Jason in disbelief. “I only did that because you made me paranoid! You could’ve explained further! Maybe that’s why people act like madmen!”

“Excuses, excuses,” Jason had said, waving his hand about as if he could swat the excuses away. “Now apologize.”

With less-good Avery looking on, confused, Avery had apologized. Less-good Avery accepted said apology and promptly invited the two to join him on a drive down to Thames Town.

And so, that is how they ended up in the backseat, complaining about being poked in the ribs and someone taking up all of the leg room. Needless to say, it was a very small backseat.

“Don’t worry, gents. We’re nearly there,” less-good Avery reassured them through the rear-view mirror.

“Cool, Avery!” Jason called over the loud wind rushing through the open windows. “Avery, man, stop leaning on me,” he then said to the Avery beside him.

“Alright, you, guy-- er-- Avery!” Avery called to the driver.

“Yessir?” Less-good Avery asked, glancing back quickly before refocusing on the road.

“Do you have a nickname or something? Us both going by ‘Avery’ is going to get really confusing!”

“I agree!” Jason concurred. “But why does he have to go by a nickname? What if he’s older than you?”

“What?” backseat Avery asked. “He’s a parallel version of me, isn’t he?”

“Exactly!” Jason said, cranking his window shut. “So?”

“So, he can’t be older than me, can he?”

Less-good Avery suddenly slammed on the brakes and the car skidded to a halt.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Jason exclaimed. "First off, that's offensive, he could totally be older than you. Second, Aves, keep driv--"

"Aves!" Avery suggested. "We can call him Aves!"

"But-- I don't want to be called Aves," less-good Avery complained with a pout as he began driving again.

"See? He doesn't want to be called Aves," Jason said pointedly. "Why don't we call you Aves, Sneezes?"

Less-good Avery chuckled from the front seat. "I like 'Sneezes'. Let's call him Sneezes!"

Jason looked as if his hand had gained sentience and socked him in the mouth. "Of course! Why didn't I think of that?"

Avery just groaned and waited for them to reach Thames Town. And that’s just what they did, several moments later.

“Here we are, gentlemen!” Less-good Avery quickly hopped out of his door and hurried to open Jason’s. The two backseat passengers slowly squeezed out of the car and onto the asphalt. Standing and recomposing himself, Avery looked about.

“Um, sorry, but it looks like we’re in the middle of nowhere.”

Less-good Avery didn’t seem phased by this and just grinned back at Avery.

“What? Why are you smiling like that? Stop it!” Avery demanded, growing anxious. Jason finally peeled himself off the ground and stood beside less-good Avery.

“Stop being so paranoid, Sneezes! Avery probably has something cool to show us.” Jason turned to less-good Avery. “I really hope you have something cool to show us.”

Less-good Avery simply laughed a cheery yet eerie laugh. He then pulled an umbrella from his coat pocket and opened it above him.

“Oh yes, it’s very cool,” he said even more eerily than he had laughed.

Yes!” Jason pumped the air with his arm and turned to Avery for a high-five. Avery winced, thinking Jason was going to slap him, then slowly high-fived the hand presented to him. There was a gap of silence.

“Awkward…” Less-good Avery said.

Suddenly, something wet dripped onto Avery’s neck. He wiped it away and looked up. “Rain.”

Jason looked up too, followed by less-good Avery peeking out from beneath his umbrella.

“So… Is this the cool thing?” Jason asked, turning his attention back to less-good Avery. Less-good Avery shrugged. “Depends on your definition of ‘cool’.”

Jason nodded, then looked back up at the sky and watched the clouds darken and swirl together.

“Cool…”

The three stood there for a moment, Avery and Jason watching the sky while less-good Avery watched them. Then the downpour fell.

“Well, this is lovely,” Avery said. “Are you gonna share that umbrella?”

Less-good Avery shook his head and stepped away from Jason, who was trying to scoot beneath the umbrella.

“Aw, come on, man! I let you keep the name and gave him the nickname!” Jason pointed back at Avery with his thumb.

“I’m still here, you know,” Avery stated sarcastically.

“Cool,” Jason said, turning to look at him. Turning back to less-good Avery, he mouthed “not cool”. Less-good Avery didn’t reply and instead smirked at Jason.

Just then a wet plop brought everyone’s attention to the road just ahead of the car. Sitting in a puddle, staring at them with large golden eyes, was a frog. A silver frog.

The three men stared back at the frog for a moment, unsure of what to do. Then the frog croaked at them.

“Tell me,” less-good Avery said, “is this cool?”

Jason and Avery were suddenly bombarded with a downpouring of gold-eyed silver frogs. They held up their arms to protect their faces from the amphibian storm as they stumbled back to the car. Avery fell upon the door handle and pulled on it. The door wouldn’t budge. He began yanking at the handle in a panicked attempt to open the door.

“Hurry, Sneezes! Can’t you get in any faster!?” Jason shouted over the din of ribbits and rain. “Just-- move!” He grabbed Avery from behind and shoved him out of the way, ripping the door open and leaping into the backseat himself.

Avery scrambled in after him and slammed the door shut.

Less-good Avery remained outside, still staring at them with a smirk on his face. In the field, far behind him, a large cylindrical object fell from the sky. It looked a lot like Jason’s silver can, but was much darker and slightly larger.

“What was that?” Avery asked in surprise.

“Oh shoot,” Jason mumbled as he watched the top of the can slide open. A white and orange figure hopped out of the top and turned to face the road they were on.

“Come on, really!?” Jason exclaimed.

Greetings Hatt! Storm here for a review this fine Review Day (and also here to earn my fourth star) so let's get right into it!

Avery had protested, stomping at less-good Avery as if he were a feral animal attempting to join one’s picnic.

Not sure I understand the analogy. I mean, I get it, but it's not something that would happen very often, so I don't understand why you used that particular analogy.

“Yes!” Jason pumped the air with his arm and turned to Avery for a high-five. Avery winced, thinking Jason was going to slap him, then slowly high-fived the hand presented to him. There was a gap of silence.

“Awkward…” Less-good Avery said.

This seems rather out of character for Jason, and it's kind of a dumb exchange to begin with. I'd tell you to just scrap it.

I have to say I disliked this chapter. It felt kind of like a bad Disney Channel show that would only be entertaining to a nine-year-old.

It seems that you pull Jason out of character for some kind of stupid gags that don't really make that much sense, so it's not worth it at all. I have to say I'm wondering why Jason and Avery even went to Terra in the first place because they don't have any sort of goal and now they're just in trouble, and the trouble isn't even an obstacle to their goal, just something annoying standing in the way of any plot advancement at all.

I'm really wondering when the main goal is going to appear because it hasn't so far.

Talk to me on Discord about this if you'd like.

Nit-picks:

Much,” Jason grabbed Avery’s handkerchief

I'm fairly sure that comma should be a dash, but it's not that important.

With less-good Avery looking on, confused, Avery had apologized.

Don't think you need that "had". In fact I think it changes the tense.

~~~
Character: Ah okay I understand. Avery was panicking because he was scared of less-good Avery. Oh by the way I think sometimes you vary when you do and don't capitalise the 'l' of less-good Avery so keep an eye on that. Anyway, now that this mystery has been cleared up, I think the development is good here.
Setting: So rich. There is so much wacky stuff, and the detail, that I can really imagine it and don't see it as chiché.
Plot: At first it seems as if little is happening, but I think the cliffhanger saves it from being a pointless chapter. The hangover itself is tense, maybe a little too obvious, but that's a very fine line. Maybe just like one more line or two of Avery asking who it is and Jason giving an unexpected answer. That would really fit with the feel rather than just seem like the ending of a two part Doctor Who episode :P
Flow: I think I might just stop commenting on flow for you.
Hope this helps,
Biscuits :)
errr, could you clarify the 'plot' section of this review some more? i'm having trouble understanding what you're trying to say;-;
Yes, less-good Avery, the frog rain IS cool.
"Avery winced, thinking Jason was going to slap him." That's just awesome. Again, I laughed. At that, and at the rest of that paragraph. Perhaps I'm repeating myself, but there's new hilarity in every chapter.
I'm now starting to wonder what "less-good" actually means. Is it less good morally, or less-good in quality? Less-good Avery certainly seems more sarcastic and derisive than Avery, but that may be because he's on his own soil.
And what is the white and orange figure??
*grins evilly* Go on... The next chapter waits.
Hello again~~~
Another great chapter! I loved the character development of Less-Good Avery. He is distinctly separate from Sneezes, yet the have their similarities as well (which is scary! XD) Also, Jason picking favorites between the Averys... haha, it's very entertaining. Quite interesting, another can... we shall have to see if Jason knows the person who was in it. Nothing much to say on this chapter, although Avery's intentions are unclear-- bringing them out in the middle of nowhere, acting creepy, and then it starts raining frogs? How odd. Anyway, can't wait to read more!
Once again, Onward and Upward to the next chapter!
(I should really stop saying that, it's probably super annoying >.>)
Wow, Hat, this story is hilarious. XD I've been reading the story for quite a while, and, I have to admit, this has to be one of my favorite chapters. It's hilarious. XD
No, I didn't have any confusion between less-good Avery and Avery. You did a great job of defining the both of them and their actions, and I didn't have a moment of confusion as I was reading the story. I like the explanation Jacob provides for the danger of meeting one's less-good self, and how Avery complains in response. The dingy little car with the small backseat is humorous, as are Avery and Jason's complaints. I laughed when they decided to give Avery the nickname "Sneezes." :P
Your sense of humor is refined and wonderful. The weirdness of the world of the less-goods is fantastic, considering how Thames Town appears to be absolutely empty, and how erratic the less-goods act. The golden-eyed silver frogs raining from the sky was quite a surprise. That certainly explains why Less-good Avery was laughing in such an evil way, as well as how quickly Avery and Jason ran back to the car. A while ago, they were complaining about how cramped the backseat is; now, they're running back to it as fast as they can. XD Less-good Avery is a traitor for not sharing umbrella with everyone else. :P
Oh, another can? It appears that a potential enemy of Jason has arrived, and I can't wait to see what happens. The ending is surprising, and a humorous conclusion to what is already an excellent and thoughtful story. Great job! I like the story - it's hilarious and thoughtful, and I'm impressed! :D
Hey Silver, thanks for the review! :D
I only just realized, by reading your review, that they never reached Thames Town... :o They were going to originally but I'd envisioned the frog-storm occurring in the middle of nowhere, so LGA (Less-good Avery) took them to nowhere.
Thames Town was meant to be the "less-good version" of London, England, though Avery and Jason might not learn this...
Agh, slightly spoilers there. XD
Once again, thanks, and I'm glad you liked it so much! The next chapter (5) will have the novel branch out into to different versions (tears and cheers. Tears will be darker, but still humorous, whilst cheers will be a lighter version, safe for a very young person who loves the story. XD)
You can choose whichever version you wish to join then, or follow both, but the tears version will be the "official" story (and I've got more ideas for it).
*insert custom Overlord-of-Tildes-like greeting here* (Jen is still on energy-saving mode. Cookie loading......)
I realized that I've not yet posted a review.... *runs and cowers*
Ahem. Anyways, I'm here now, and I'll write that darned review that I forgot to do a couple of days back..... ehehehehe ^ ^'
Less-good Avery truly behaves like a madman. I could almost perfectly understand-yet-not-understand-at-the-same-time his actions, as a fellow madman (Er.... "madjen"? No... he's not a Jen.... How do I say this...?). Yayz for another interesting character, yes?
For your sentence:
"With less-good Avery looking on, confused, Avery had apologized."
it's okay to just write "Avery apologized." Reduced words = better under most case scenarios.
Also, why does Jason sound like a stereotypical 17-year-old boy with an attitude problem? XD No offence, of course, but his method of speech is quite different from the one from when Avery first met him. Is this intentional? XD Maybe it's because he's an alien.... Aliens are strange... ( '-')
Also: settings check! Let's see if what I have in mind matches with the setting you're trying to describe. To me, they are currently on a road in the middle of nowhere, there is flatland all around them, with the occasional short vegetation and some small wildflowers. The trees are tree-like but still eerily different, and are bent in boxy and strange formations. But of course, they still look like trees. The grass is pretty much yellowish. In fact, to me, the entire scene has a yellowish tint. Even the sky is yellow with a hint of green (though, that may just be me XD I think you actually described the sky in the last chappie, I can't seem to remember...) There is the strange sun, of course, which I really don't know how to recount other than being irregularly shaped and strangely colored... The road is an asphalt road with almost no other cars/people traveling by. It is not wide-- only one lane for each direction. Then the amphibious rain consists of a few drops of normal water and a whole ton of slipper, slimy silver frogs. The frogs croak as they fall, leading to a storm of croaks and squishy splats as they fall down to earth. The noise is so immense Jason and Avery have to shout at each other in order for their voices to reach.
Is that correct? Or, vaguely close to the truth? That is the image I have in mind, you can use that as a reference to how the readers are interpreting your setting descriptions.
Anyways, there aren't a lot of other points that I want to discuss with you. I fear, in my current state, if I were to crack down on grammar, I would go splendidly insane (er... more so that I already am). I'll come back some day in the future, when work isn't as harsh and I can get more sleep...
Anywho, thank you for another amusing chappie of Avery Trent! XD I hope everything is going along well on your end~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here, have tildes to cheer up~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (because I'm useless at everything else QvQ)
Happy writing~~~!
Thanks once again for a wonderful review, Jen! XD
Less-good Avery was getting quite annoying and I hoped he wouldn't be confused with Avery. I'll deal with that soon enough *hint hint*.
Your description of the scene is almost perfect! :o
The only thing is the trees. I imagined some tall pine trees (or pine tree-shaped trees) lining the road in some places here and there, maybe some rounder-topped trees off in the distance.
Everything else was incredibly accurate. I'm glad! XD
(By the way, the sky is blue, but it's mostly blocked out by the pink supernova mess of a sun.)
Chapter five is nearly done, so get ready to review again soon! :D :P
Wow... three times in a row? Thanks lag >.>
Wait, is it me or do you sign your replies with "-Jules"? I just noticed it. Is that your name? O________________O *runs and cowers again* ( '-')
Ahem. Er... ehehehe.... anyways, no problem! Do you update on a weekly basis? Or is it random? I seem to be more random that usual. Is that a good thing? TILDES~~~~~~~~~~~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, Jules isn't my name. It's just a nickname someone gave me and I like enough to use when signing off reviews and review replies.
As for posting, it's usually whenever I finish a chapter. Though now it might be a bit longer between posts as I have to write two chapters at a time: one for the light version and one for the dark.
I see. I'll now read my previous post, sigh, stick my head in a cookie jar, and rocket chair away out of embarrassment. Excuse me. ( '-')
Anyways, thanks for clarifying, and happy writing~~~!
