42 THE GARDEN GNOMES
The horse’s ears swiveled in their direction. It whinnied. They all turned to look as something rustled in the bushes.
“What is it now?” Liza asked.
Christian picked up a bucket, ready to swing it at whatever might appear, but the next moment a frightened garden gnome waddled out into the open. The one in the wagon squeaked with joy.
“Just a garden gnome,” said Mr. Catcher, massaging his chest. “Thank heavens. My poor heart can’t take much more excitement.”
Aurelia and Carina stood in front of the new garden gnome, listening and nodding as it squeaked at them through its painted-on mouth.
“He wants to stay with us,” Aurelia said after several minutes of this. “He saw you come through the gardens, but he couldn’t keep up. He thinks you’re all so big that nothing would dare attack you.”
Her eyes lingered on Mr. Catcher’s rumpled suit, the scratches on Liza and Christian’s faces, the smudges of dirt on their clothes.
“I take it he didn’t see those damn birds,” Liza said.
“Of course he can stay,” Christian said. “But—”
He stopped, not wanting to frighten the garden gnome further. He picked it up and deposited it into the wagon beside the first one, which jumped up and down, squeaking happily, and hugged it.
“Do they have names?” Christian asked. Aurelia shook her head.
“They have no use for them.” She flitted up and landed on his shoulder. “Are you ready?”
“Ready?” Christian said. “Ready for what?”
Aurelia’s enormous golden eyes blinked at him. “Ready to journey to the Otherworld, of course. To find the Rover.”
“To find—” Morrow, the Rover king? He had forgotten she had asked him this once before. Then he had said no, seeing no reason why he should go. Now she seemed certain he had prepared for it. So casual, “go to the Otherworld.”
“I can’t leave Minerva,” he said.
“Is that not why you returned with friends?” Aurelia asked patiently. “They will, of course, care for her in your absence. Is this not as it was planned by the Guardian?”
“I don’t understand,” Christian said. “Why me? Why can’t you go find Morrow yourselves?”
The fairies hung their heads in shame.
“We are forbidden from the Otherworld,” Aurelia said.
“Why?” asked Christian, so she told him.
43 AURELIA’S TALE
A long time ago, long before Earth was habitable or humans even thought of, the fairies lived in the Otherworld, though of course that was not its name. The fairies had their own name for it in their language that sounded like wind stirring in the leaves, but they had now been on Earth so long that it was forgotten.
They had lived in a beautiful part of the world called the Sunforest, where the sun slanted through the trees and soft breezes blew. Many other strange and lovely creatures also lived there, and throughout the world, creatures with which the fairies were great friends.
“Of course, we did not get along with all of them,” Aurelia said. “The marsh-witches in particular hated us, but we did not trouble about them.”
In the Otherworld there also lived Goblin. He was a hideous creature who hated the world’s other inhabitants and so caused much destruction. The fairies worked to keep him out of the Sunforest, but soon they were given a much larger responsibility.
“In time Goblin’s tricks went too far,” Aurelia said. “One day, he destroyed Neva’s palace, killing his mother.”
“Who is Neva?” Christian asked.
“I think your kind would call him an angel,” Aurelia said. “He was angry with Goblin, and so he imprisoned him in a tree in our forest and told us to keep him there.”
For centuries Goblin remained imprisoned in the tree, but, even in his confinement, his power was so great he was able to call other ugly and evil creatures to him: hellhounds and banshees and nightmares, imps and crows, spiders and hags and furies and werewolves. These creatures carried on his work, destroyed villages and laid waste to field and forest, and the fairies were hard-pressed to stop them.
Then Earth was discovered.
Goblin became restless in his prison. Neva told the fairies to strengthen their spells and increase their guard, for he believed, with another world in sight, Goblin would try to escape and hide from his jailers.
At first the fairies were diligent in their watch. Aurelia, in particular, was careful to keep an eye on Goblin, but as time went by she began to talk to him in his prison. Though she had always heard he hated all lovely creatures in his ugliness, he seemed to warm to her friendship.
“I became lax in my guard,” Aurelia said sadly. “I believed my friendship would be enough to make him stay.”
For a while it seemed so. Goblin’s army of creatures were hunted down and killed, and he called no new beasts to him. He seemed as content in his prison as anyone could be. But then, one night, he broke loose.
“We were taken by surprise,” Aurelia said twisting her golden hands together. “Many of our sisters were destroyed then, as he ripped free of his prison and howled through the Sunforest to the portal. Neva was furious.”
As punishment for allowing Goblin to escape, the fairies were banished from the Otherworld until such time as he was defeated once and for all. They had come to love Earth and its residents, but they had not forgotten their home nor begun to long any less to return to it. But when the battle between them and Goblin was over, he was not destroyed. Morrow had trapped him, restrained him in such a way none could approach him, covered over the seat of Goblin’s power and surrounded it with goodness and light so his allies would be kept away—but not killed him.
“And so we are still here,” Aurelia said. “And we must remain here until Goblin is destroyed. That is why you must go.”

Ya know, Christian, there are other forms of weapons. While I respect your usage of primitive weapons, and random household items to combat these fantastical creatures, they can prove to be unreliable with anything but fighting fire.
LOVE that line!
Yayy! Another story, and more info on this magical world of theirs! You do your stories so well, ya know.
WAIT. FAIRIES. EARTH. ARE THEY THE TOOTHFAIRIES? o_O Please say yes...
Okay, you need to backpedal and go to the beginning. Earth... discovered. How does that work, when the park is inside Earth? Or is it that the portal to earth was discovered? I thought that peoples from earth came into the park each day, so wouldn't they know about it all along? I think more explanation is needed there, because I am kinda confused with that. Not a lot of explaining, but perhaps one or two more sentences, telling us how the whole thingy works with Earth and such. Or are you saving that for another chapter? It just sounds like a cliff-hanger explanation, where you tell us half of it and leave the other bit for later--while we really need to know the whole thing without getting extremely confused about it.
And yet again... You did it. Not really a cliff-hanger ending, not really. But what you did do was something similar. You ended this right when Christian is about to reply, (presumably in a sputtering of words) and so we are left wondering what he is going to reply with. I think its pretty obvious as to what he is going to say, because he is still not completely gone with the park, but he is starting to become more attached it than the world outside.
WAIT. The Otherworld? That is where they all were before Earth was discovered... Okay! So maybe just a little bit more on the relation between Earth and the Otherworld so we know where it all ties in?
~Darth Timmyjake
Yep, you got it there at the end. The fairies are from the Otherworld, so to their mind, Earth was "discovered" the way Columbus "discovered" North America even though millions of people were already living here...
Hi, I am back again. I had some previous reviewing obligations that I really needed to get to. (Not that you are less important ya know, but you aren't going to murder me if i don't review your stuff lol)
So, where were we? Ah yes, chapter 68! And oh, by the way, I found out that the bold chapter titles not being bold is just my stupid laptop. So now worries for you.
[]“He?” Morrow said. “What are you, an expert in spider anatomy?”[/quote]
Bwahahahahaha you crack me up blue!
Christian is officially amazing. He just made a pet out of a big ugly furry eight-eyed spider! He is so cool. If not a little messed up in the head. Such a cute thing. wait what? Blue, how did you make a giant spider cute!!?!?!?!?!
And people say I have lame excuses. You are really trying hard to be a big-time loser, right Tirion?
So, shall we move on to the portal?
~Messenger
Noooo Tirion is also my precious baby! <333 But it's okay, no one really likes him except me, and that's alright. Anyway, if I managed to make a giant spider cute it's only because I actually like real-life spiders and can look at them and be like, "D'awww...let's get you outside where you'll be comfy" instead of either screaming or trying to kill them.
first girl to say THAT about spiders
<333 Spiders. Also bees.
Messenger here for a review, or possibly two (that rhymes cuz I'ma genius:D )
Oh cool, so the witch will finally come out and talk. I love her, she's so cool. hopefully no one attacks her!
Umm . . . not sure, but I think you need a comma after "ahead"
Wait, hang on! I thought they were going to have Conrad give the people a speech? They are going to the portal? >.>
I guess I misread that one. But . . .
Ronin is such a . . . goofball. He is always so formal, even in a time like this where they are talking to a mind-speaking, very-possibly dangerous witch. hahahahaha
OK I verbally laughed this time! hahahahaha You could have added some bit of Morrow's response to possibly make it even funnier, but that was hysterical.
Yay, no one killed Narodnanya, and she didn't like accidentally murder one of them. Gaah she is really starting to grow on me. Y U make your characters so likable!
~Messenger
I'm so happy you like the tea line
I was hoping people would like it.
Ew spider.
It's so nice that Christian always manages to befriend creatures that most people take an instant disliking to. He would be real good friends with Maria if they met ^.^ Tirion sounds like an interesting name, and person. I am looking forwards to seeing how Morrow and him get along, and at least the group that will battle Goblin is increasing by a little, huh?
I mean hello
Eyes blazing with what emotion? Anger, hate, friendship, I wanted to know! The next line was Morrow saying he doesn't have to join them which could show a dislike to Tirion and maybe be anger or something... but I wasn't sure what emotion Morrow's eyes were expressing there. So it would be nice to drop it in.
--Trying think about tea <3 I loved it! I also very much looking forwards to Tirion's tale which must be coming in due time. I mean, everyone else's has.
Poor Naro, always being given the wrong hand if they meet. But she seems to be accepted after time, and I wonder if she will ever tell Morrow what really happened to his father... or maybe she's worried it'll scare them off a bit. But either way - this was a good chapter and I only had a small point to make! Maybe you should drop in a little thing about Conrad being in the caravan behind the horse when Christian makes introductions? Otherwise it seems like you've kind of forgotten his presence ^.^ Ah, keep up the good writing!
Deanie x
Eyes blazing with lots of...eye-coitus. Lots and lots and lots of eye-coitus.
I really am going to bed after this, honestly I am. Buuuuut I miscalculated how quickly things in the green room were being swept up and if I stop rambling and get reading, I may just finish this one in time.
On a more serious note though, where are all the worriers in this story? Everyone is far too lax about the amount of time they have!
Specifics
1. I think Morrow catches on too quickly that she can hear their thoughts. Just because she speaks in thoughts, shouldn't mean automatically that she can hear what they're thinking as well. I love the tea comment though! Good throw back.
2. I feel like someone should be urging them to get a move on so they make it to the portal in time. That might be because in this situation, I would be that person and I feel there has to be someone like me in this group
Overall
Oh goodie, the elf knows a shortcut so they'll be on time! This is getting to be a bit of a pattern, huh? Maybe they can just run instead? It really is a little too coincidental that every time they get delayed, they meet someone who can help them get where they need to be faster!
I do like the elf though and I'm sensing some kind of back-story behind him and Morrow - this is good!
So they've gained two new companions, Christian is good at picking up strays huh? Okay, I am really going to bed now. Or at least I think I am.
Heather xx
I SEE WHAT YOU MEAN NOW.
. I mean, I can understand why she killed Morrow the Elder- and OMG. Morrow did not strike me as arrogant. Did he go into her marshes in the hopes that she would kill him? Was it a suicide mission? D: Poor Morrow the Younger. He's not gonna be happy when he finds out it was she who killed him, if he ever does.
Okay, first off, ew! Spiders, Blue? Really? You really must hate me. ;__;
I found it a bit.. sweet? that Christian saved the spider. Sickening, but sweet. Clearly, he's too noble for his own good. Shoulda just let the thing die. What good came from saving it?! Sure, it's purring(?) and being all lovey-dovey, but if he wants a pet, I'll get him a cat. *grimaces* A giant spider as a pet, no thank you.. He'll definitely be getting no booty from Minerva.
ANYWHO
I'm liking this Elf Prince <3 I'm now curious to know how he and Morrow know each other, how close their relationship is, and IF THEY WILL MARRY. I can already tell I'll be squealing over them quite often. xD And since you've told almost everyone's tales, why not tell us Tirion's?
Also, Narodnaya makes me
*goes to read the next installment* (there better be more gayness)
OH MY GOSH "he'll definitely be getting no booty from Minerva" I can't even comment on anything else you said because I'm still dying from that
I SAW AN OPPORTUNITY AND I TOOK IT.
WHAT IS AIR I CAN'T
No! Spider Kitty is perfect! He's so cute!! His name is Katreus and he is scared in the dark and always got picked on because of this. You have to show some pity! He's probably more scared of you than you are of him!
Oh and also the pairing Tirion/Morrow is called Morrion, don't let Blue tell you any different.
CURSE YOU LEMMY WHY WOULD YOU TELL HER THAT
TIMORROW FOREVER
