Capital 'I' feels assertive.
I declare,
I deduce.
It's used in proper English,
boxy, and of important use.
~~~
Capital 'I' takes up space;
it's a bold personal reference.
(Although not used in every case,
as it can make your thesis sound 'unconfident'.)
~~~
Capital 'I' is used in counting,
Roman numerals I, II, and III.
It has a definite meaning;
a set value, you see.
~~~
but lowercase 'i'
feels vulnerable, informal,
even nonchalant.
you can use it when you're texting
(teens'll be surprised if you do not).
~~~
lowercase 'i' lets you in,
a peek at one's hidden self.
it's what feels right in a poem
where you might be revealing yourself.
~~~
i wish, i feel, i will,
i wanted you to know,
lowercase 'i' may not obey English,
but it feels like home.
damn, the imagination 😭 i never thought of writing about something as random as a letter. the way you used “i” as the whole concept of the poem is genuinely adorable and cute. i especially love how the ending makes it feel so warm, like lowercase “i” is where the writer feels most at home.
Hi youngdreamer! While I may not have too much to add onto this, I think it would be fun to write a review of this poem!
This is such a fun, direct poem that very clearly distinguishes between "I" and "i" in poetry. It feels like a study... while also remaining a poem. It can read like a silly little poem, but it actually brings up a good point on the importance of capitalization and the effects it has on a reader when interpreting a poem! As a poet myself, I very much switch between the uses of "I" and "i" depending on the tone of poem. As @/Wolfi mentioned in her comment, I think this poem serves as a way to almost educate readers when they leave the review/comment of "this needs capitalization!" Poetry is so free and expressive that poems CAN BE ALL CAPITALIZED or not capitalized at all. Same can be said for grammar! So your poem brings up a wonderful, dare I say necessary point!
Something that could have been fun would be to structure this poem so that it is almost shaped like a capitalized I. It came to my mind as I was reading--this is a fun poem, why not make experiment more with the structure?
This ending line makes this piece feel more like a poem rather than just an essay on the differences between capital and lowercase "I". It brings a personal tone to the poem that the rest of the poem doesn't have, which creates intrigue and makes the poem stand out. I think it creates a good ending to the piece! So well done
Overall, I think this is a fun and innovative poem! Just what readers and writers need. Thanks for posting and hope to read more from you soon!
First and foremost, I must say I LOVE your suggestion to make the structure into the shape of an I! So creative....I'll def have to experiment with that later 🤭
I'm glad you found the poem somewhat important..even more so that you enjoyed the ending which I found very cheesy/corny....I tried my best guys
😅
I really liked this!! Love your style of writing, btww
Aww thanks! appreciate it!
Love this! Although it iften irks me when people use lowercase i for no apparent effect, I guess it's kind of similair to when you write your own name in tiny or whatever
yeah I was wondering how other people viewed it, bc for some reason I felt like I had such a comparatively weird view/notion of it
Also Ik it's ironic I'm using uppercase 'I' rn, but usually I only use lowercase in poetry 🤭
This should be the official place we point folks to when they tell poets to capitalize their Is! Love this!
Hello!
Wow this is really well made!! I like that it rhymes, and it's coherent, clear, and well-writen. Good job!
I always use uppercase 'I', though |D but your text really started convincing me that lowercase is better... though after a while I de-convinced myself.
I liked your reference to roman numerals, it was very well-thought of! Anyways I really liked this and I know this isn't long but I'm not that great at making reviews anyways...
Keep writing, have fun and also have a wonderful day!
"though after a while I de-convinced myself" 😂😂
No but seriously you have complete freedom to choose which form you want...UNTILLL it comes down to poetry that is
