Violence

In shorts

The car grew cold as I sat with my keys in hand. I checked my phone again, making sure I got there at the time she had told me to come. My face was freshly shaven after she told me she hated my teenage facial hair, and I covered myself with that expensive cologne my mother gave me for my birthday. My frozen hand knocked on the apartment door, trying to wipe the pathetic smile off my face.

“Hey,” she said, looking down at her feet. She looked up at me with puffy, red eyes and gave me a loving embrace. Covering me with soft kisses, she told me she wanted to get back together. She was mine again, and I was the luckiest man on earth.

No, it didn’t go like that. I’m lying. It went more like this:

“Hey!” She greeted me so happy it made me sick. We had just broken up, and her happy eyes glistened in the morning light. “You want some?” She held out her coffee mug, red lipstick stains lining the rim.

She eyed me down me as I sipped the bitter drink, her sweet lips giggling at my aversion to coffee. She always did this thing where her big eyes would stick onto me, craving me. She would piece together my eyes, my hair, my skin; tracing the veins pulsing at the sight of her. I wondered why she looked at me that way but didn’t want to be my girlfriend, or why she wore that shirt that hugged her in all the right places when she told me she just wanted to be friends.

Her presence was torture.

It all started a month ago. She had gotten up for a drink and I glanced over at her phone as a text from Alex appeared. Jealousy raged inside me, why had she never told me about an Alex? Before I could think of more disastrous reasons why Alex texted her, she walked into the room.

“Hey babe, Alex texted you.” I said it flatly, wanting to see her reaction.

Her hands immediately latched onto her phone, “how do you know?”

“I just looked at your phone.”

“Don’t look at my phone, you creep.” She teased me, still looking down at Alex’s text.

I didn’t laugh, why did she have to make everything a joke? “Who is he, Babe?”

“No one. Leave it alone.” Her eyes pierced through me, eyeing me like a bit of food.

Later that night, I stared at my dark ceiling, my tired eyes wide open. I texted her about it, knowing I would be able to sleep once she answered who he was. She admitted she had been cheating on me. She kept avoiding the questions I knew I would hate the answer to. Is he better than me? Did you ever love me?

When I told her I still wanted to make things work, she let out the longest, deepest sigh. She always had a long list of reasons and excuses why we couldn’t see each other. When I asked her if we could still be friends she hestitatly agreed. Alone in her apartment, I knew she only wanted one thing, but at least it was something. She flew into the bedroom and I subserviently followed.

The second I walked into her room, my body sunk to the floor. I took a deep breath and tried to find my balance. The walls hunched over me as she casually laid herself on those familiar sheets, I darted to the bathroom. My hands frantically locked the door, I planted myself in front of the toilet. Puke, as red as her perfectly painted nails, rose up and out of my throat. My throat bubbled and burnt as if fiery beetles ran through my skin. I groaned for help as flashing pain shot through my chest. I turned to the mirror to see my chafed mouth and stretched-out skin, revealing the muscle underneath. The deformed face staring back at me screamed as it saw two slashes on my chest. The bathroom spun around me as my body hit the floor.

The door swung open to reveal my dreamy woman. The daylight glowed behind her in the ill-lit bathroom. Her angel-like figure looked down at me as lit-up dust danced around her like stars in the night sky. She knelt herself over me and kissed the tears off my aching face. Her delicate hands ran across my chest and dug into my skin. Talons ripped me open, right where the slashes had been. I tore apart, gushing all over her shiny floor, but I couldn’t stop kissing her rosy lips.

She reached inside me and her gorey hand came back out with my beating heart. The heart pumped blood all over us, leaving the walls with the same splatter marks as when she helped me paint my grandfather’s fence. She had insisted on helping me with the task. She showed up with overalls cut into shorts, so short I hoped my grandfather wouldn’t see her in them. We had just started dating, the flirtatious tones and grabs kept me on edge. The air around me was so sparkly. We were both standing on the same dry grass, under the same hot July sun. Knowing that I existed in the same world as this woman filled me with joy. The bathroom grew warm and my eyes closed shut to meet God.

I blinked.

I was back in her room, her body painted elegantly on her white sheets. Her clean, bloodless hands caressed my put-together face. Behind the bathroom door that watched us kiss, the floors were clean, and the walls lacked red splatter. She had taken my heart, leaving the crime scene spotless.

Hello!
The passage you've shared is a vivid and intense portrayal of a complicated relationship. The writing captures the emotional turmoil and conflicting feelings experienced by the narrator. The use of descriptive language adds depth to the narrative, creating a vivid atmosphere and allowing readers to engage with the protagonist's thoughts and emotions.

The contrast between the two versions of events, one hopeful and romantic, and the other dark and macabre, serves to emphasize the narrator's internal struggle and the disillusionment they feel. It effectively highlights the disparity between their idealized perception of the relationship and the painful reality they face.

The passage also explores themes of betrayal, jealousy, and obsession. The discovery of infidelity ignites a series of unsettling events, causing the narrator's perception of their partner to change dramatically. The tension between desire and repulsion is skillfully portrayed, as the narrator is both repelled by the partner's actions yet drawn to them in an inexplicable manner.

The imagery used throughout the passage is evocative and adds a visceral quality to the narrative. The description of physical sensations, such as the taste of bitter coffee, the sight of red lipstick stains, and the nauseating feeling of sickness, enhances the reader's immersion in the story. The juxtaposition of the romanticized imagery with the grotesque and violent imagery in the latter part of the passage creates a sense of unease and adds to the overall impact of the writing.

Overall, the passage effectively conveys a range of emotions and creates a distinct atmosphere. It explores the complexities of human relationships, particularly the entanglement of desire and pain. With further refinement and attention to pacing, the passage could become an even more impactful and cohesive piece of writing.

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night(whichever one it is in your part of the world),

Hi! I'm here to leave a quick review!!

First Impression: This was quite the powerful little tale right here. I think you've gone and done an incredible job of conveying what seems like any standard issue toxic relationship there and turning it into a proper horrifying sequence that just brands itself into your mind and conveys this message with a power I've never seen before.

Anyway let's get right to it,

Okayy well this is quite the place to be starting off with. I love how immediately despite there being a clear façade of things being all perfect and rosy constructed there the fact that its all a façade is also abundantly clear and there's a lot of questionable energy running through it all immediately.

Well that was quite the move there. You can very clearly see the difference between reality and that little dream but perhaps the strongest part of this whole situation is the actual similarities we see in terms of the sheer horror aspect of all of this.

Well that sounds like the start of something here. It seems to be we're going down a bit of the classic route on that one in terms of how this particular relationship will be derailed into the horrifying position it happens to be in right now.

Well that derailed with a lot more of a straightforward than I was expecting it to. Wow. Given how things were at that start I thought this was going to be more of the slow stabbed in the back style situation but this is decidedly faster and more devasting. I think this almost works better even though it does see to cast a few doubts about how much time has really passed here.

The deformed face staring back at me screamed as it saw two slashes on my chest. The bathroom spun around me as my body hit the floor.

Oh wow, well that got a lot more visceral than I was expecting for it to get there. Certainly the sort of sight that leaves us reeling quite a bit. You've done a wonderful job there in terms of really hitting us over the head with that one. It definitely conveys the point about how this relationship has gown rather well here.

Well that's arguably the most horrifying depiction of a heart being stolen I have ever seen, mostly because it seems this time we're going with the heart quite literally being stolen from this person against his will there. I think you certainly bring across the sheer shock of something like that incredibly well with this kind of description and it builds on the little buildup we had from the earlier scene very well, and just sort of visually how this has literally torn this person apart.

I blinked.

I was back in her room, her body painted elegantly on her white sheets. Her clean, bloodless hands caressed my put-together face. Behind the bathroom door that watched us kiss, the floors were clean, and the walls lacked red splatter. She had taken my heart, leaving the crime scene spotless.

Ooooh that's a perfect place to end that one. Seeing all of that in full detail with plenty of just the worst horror only for the aftermath to be so clean and normal looking just exemplifies how well this heart stealing happens and also quite how doomed our main character happens to be in this one.

Aaaaand that's it for this one.

Overall: Overall, I think you've done a wonderful job taking something usually fairly straightforward and done many many times and converting that into just something entirely different and powerful and yet somehow also conveying that similar message at the same time. I think I enjoyed this quite a bit as a result.

As always remember to take what you think was helpful and forget the rest.

Stay Safe
Kate

This is such a great story! I love the constant use of adjectives and your descriptions are....indescribable. Overall, I love this story. Keep up the good work!

Either what happened was his (I’m assuming the narrator is a guy) imagination emphasizing the girl’s toxicity, or the girl is a literal monster that needs his life force to survive. This story is disturbing any way it’s looked at and I love it. No matter how much he tries to run, she will always come back. An interesting thing to note is that vultures eat what’s already dead, so is he dead inside?

I wish you an amazing day/night.
