Pretend to Pretend

In Poems

"love you too" he jokes.
His words echo down the hallway
followed by his perfect laughter.

We’re best friends,
nothing more.

His fingers intertwine with mine,
an inside joke - not real
and his text "goodnight my love" means more to me than it should.

Every word, every touch,
means nothing special to him as he laughs,
and I laugh too, but I break inside

I love him,
Nothing less.

He can’t know, that I want our friendship to be more,
so I must pretend.
No, I must pretend to pretend,
to love him.

Holy Jebus! I think it'd be safe to say that we've all had our fair share of experiences like this. You capture it so precisely; the heartbreaking moment when you realise that you'll never mean as much to him as he does to you ;( Good job!!!

You're given the form, but you have to write the sonnet yourself. What you say is completely up to you.
