Seekers of the moon's shining lights;

Gatekeepers of the starry nights.

Walking with a snarl and a glower,

The woods yield under your power.

Lions are monarchs of the sahara;

You are kings of the forests.

Animals bow respectively.

The throne is shared.

No one rules alone.

Harmony lives in your pack.

CLoaked-hearted wolves, beware.

Your pack is one.

All wolves-

                  One.

Luna speculates from the stars-

                                  Wise queen.

She watches to see all is well;

Watching to see all is fair.

Your howls are no howls.

Nor are they communication.

Your howls...are songs.

Haunting, mourning songs-

Music to Selene, titan of the moon.

Killers, you are not.

Widely misunderstood beings, yes, you are.

Wolves are living spirits walking Earth.

Wolves are stars, sparkling in the sky.

Wolves...are great beasts in my eyes.

Wow. That was incredibly deep! Wolves are among my favorite animals, and I love astronomy, so when I saw the title Canis Lupis, I had to click on it. I was not disappointed. Your poetry was moving. Your comparison with the monarchy of the lions with the polyarchy of the wolves really spoke out to me! The fact that you also referred to the howls as song and explained that wolves are a misunderstood species struck a cord too. Most of the animals I love are often misunderstood and negatively stereotyped, so to find another sympathizer in this poem was a nice touch for me. Here’s the kicker: You mentioned Selene, the goddess of the moon and driver of the moon chariot! She is such a minor goddess and not well known. Kudos to you for bringing her back to life!

Hiya! I'm so glad you like this poem! Wolves are my most favorite creatures on Earth and I had to write a poem on this. And since wolves are often associated with the moon, I had to include Selene in this.

Hi, I'm Joe.

Right away I want to say that I enjoyed how you mixed imagery with metaphor and myth. "Gatekeepers," "thrones," "titan of the moon" all set a grand, majestic tone for the overall work. You bring in a nice sense of mystery, too; I've read the lines about the "cloak-hearted wolves" several times now, thinking about the meaning and the intent behind those words.

I think the weakest part of the poem is the end. You start off heavy with metaphor and imagery, but end with literal statements that leave the poem on a flat note. I would take some time away from the work and come back at it without reading those last five lines again. See what else comes to mind or feels natural.

Something I like to do when I'm stuck is go to a random verb or adjective generator and find a way to use the word it gave me. You might try a similar exercise.

Overall, this feels like it would pair well with a vivid watercolor painting complete with stars, auroras, and clouds like castles in the distance. You have a great sense of imagery and wonder. I'd love to see you play more on those strengths in the future. I always end with the line(s) that are going to stick with me, and these are the ones that I'll still be chewing on tonight:

Cloaked-hearted wolves, beware.
Your pack is one.

Good job, and keep writing.
Joe

Thank you for reviewing! I agree the last five lines are not as strong, and I will do better in the future.
