I just wanted to say first of all, this poem really made me smile but also ache in a quiet way. It’s such a sweet idea to give Salt and Pepper voices, and then to let that playfulness slowly unravel into something really soft and emotional. I didn’t expect to feel comforted by condiments but… here we are, lol.
The opening has this light, almost nursery-rhyme vibe (“birds of feather - party favor”), which immediately sets me up for something fun, but then you twist it in such a cool way. By the time we get to “as you are ground down into dust” the tone shifts from playful to something more melancholy, like these little shakers aren’t just kitchen props anymore, they’re stand-ins for a relationship weathering time, silence, and change. That contrast was really effective, it makes the later tenderness hit harder.
The moment that completely stole me was:
“Tears are made of Salt. / So if you ever need / to cry then cry on me.”
Like… wow. That is such a gorgeous pivot. Suddenly the metaphor folds in on itself, salt as tears, salt as care, salt as presence. It feels so obvious once you say it, but it only works because you built us there step by step.
I also liked the colons you sprinkled throughout, they almost feel like pauses or little beats of hesitation, which works with the idea of Salt being this quiet companion, sitting and waiting beside Pepper for centuries. It gives the piece its own rhythm, almost like it’s breathing.
If I had one tiny critique, it’s that some of the earlier rhymes feel a little too tidy compared to the looseness and tenderness of the ending. Like, the final stanzas don’t need rhyme, they’re already humming with intimacy. That rawness is where your poem feels most alive, so I wonder what it would be like if you let that style carry a little further back.
And ahhh, the last line - “You can always wipe your tears on me.” It’s so soft and unassuming. I love that you don’t end on something grand, but instead on something practical and gentle, like an offer whispered between friends. That honestly stayed with me after reading.
This was such a sweet and quietly moving piece - thank you for letting me sit with it <3
thanks! <3
Hello!! I'm Milesperhour, here to review this very powerful work! I'm going to talk a lot about my own interpretation of the poem, apologies if it's way off lol. I think one of the things that is great about this piece is how it's simultaneously very moving but also vague enough to be open to interpretation.
Ok, first of all, the metaphors in this work extremely well, especially for such a unique idea. I don't think I've ever seen salt and pepper used as a metaphor for anything, so it's fascinating to see how expertly you used them as symbols. From my perspective, the "salt" and "pepper" characters seem like friends, who, while they have always been there for each other, have never been able to talk about their feelings (best captured in the line "Although I've never been dear to you.
At least I'm always here for you.") They're not particularly close, but the salt character is still offering themself as a shoulder to cry on since they don't have anyone but each other. At least that's what I got from it lol.
Overall, this is really good! (also realized from the other titles of your works that salt and pepper are recurring symbols? that's really cool, ill have to read those poems as well)

<3 thanks! you're very close actually, the only thing is that I meant Salt and Pepper Literally, as in, the two characters are the embodiments of Salt and Pepper. But... along with my other poems. this is hard to convey. lol
Hi! My name is CATS and I'm here to leave a review on your work. This looks so amazing, so let's start!
Woah. In my opinion, your rhyming is SO smooth. I admire it. Your syllable pattern makes it easy to read as well! Very nice.
OOh, like the other reviews said, I think this poem gives off a feeling of emotions, like two people in love. I'm kind of confused with 'I have watched you resolve waver.' First I read it as 'I have watched you resolve water,' then 'I have watched your resolved water,' then, 'I have watched your resolve waver,' a little hard to understand, but maybe that's just me :/ I also love the creative colons in the middle of stanzas!
I feel like adding a 'the' in 'as you are ground down into dust' would be good for the flow. It would turn out like 'as you are ground down into the dust'. It continues the beat that is playing out in my head lol. My opinion, as usual. I love the feeling of a person comforting or like sitting beside someone because of sadness or grief. It is nice of the narrator.
Ok, this part has a great rhythmic flow, MY FAVORITE part!!! Nothing to say about here, just that the narrator is questioning if he should comfort her and do something.
Very well done here! I love how you compared tears to salt. Although, they are salty lol.
Oooo nice! Wow, I'm impressed with all the rhymes! Again, this part is very smooth. I suggest consisting the periods/commas at the end of each line, or either removing them. Because a reader always pauses at the end, so there isn't really use for it. THAT'S A PROBLEM I HAVE too!
It is nice of the narrator to offer a shoulder to cry on.
OVERALL: Overall, your poem is very smooth, I love the comparisons, and the kindness. Your poems are really done well, I can see you put a lot of effort into it. Great job you have here.
Happy Writing, Happy Reading, Happy Poetry, and Happy Review Month!
(it used to be just happy writing, phew!)
Sincerely,
CATS
thanks!
No worries!!;
Hello! Bluuru here! The title stole my attention so I've decided to share my thoughts on your work.
"I am Salt and you are Pepper
what to do with birds of feather?
Share a shelf with a dark stranger
Set beside the party favor"
I really like your writing style! I love all the methaphores. And how you described narrator "salt" and the person they are talking to "pepper". Ingredients similar, but not quite. One is salty, the other one is spicy. And the reference to birds of the feather. Alsways together.
"Seasoning for any weather
never bland when mixed together
I have watched your resolve waver
Yet you cling to taste and flavor"
I love the rhymes! And how you described that the people here are always great when mixed together. And how the narrator watched the person they are speaking about.
"I have sat beside you for so long
And never have I asked what is wrong
as you are ground down into dust
I exist beside you, as I must"
Now this sounds a bit toxic. The narrator always with the "Pepper" but never asked about their well being. Also "I exist beside you, as I must" also sounds like the narrator feels like he NEED to be with "Pepper". Great job.
"Four thousand years I've stood by your side
Bound by use, not made to confide
But as I watch your strength take leave
I wonder if I could ever relieve "
Now it feels like the "Pepper" is making the narrator be with them. The two last lines are powerful. Like the narrator just waits for "Pepper" to become weak to be able to finally leave, after all this time.
"Tears are made of Salt.
So if you ever need
to cry then cry on me."
Now the narrator says that the "Pepper" can rely on them. But I feel like it's forced.
"Although I've never been dear to you.
At least I'm always here for you.
So if you need to wipe your tears.
Just remember that I am near.
Saline daydreams in your ear
You don't ever have to fear
Just remember that I am near
:
:
:
You can always wipe your tears on me."
The narrator is talking about it, maybe like they are hypnotized. Trying to convince the "Pepper" or even themself about the fact that the "Pepper' really can rely on them, even use them, even tho they were never close.
Overall, great poem! I loved it!
Thanks! wow, i didn't even think of it like this, its really cool to see how other people interpret my poems <3 Its def a cool interpretation
I'm glad!
Hey HildegardHope! This is Alex, here with a review. I don't think I've ever reviewed a poem by you, so I'm super excited to see what you've got for us. So let's dive right in!
The title is so fascinating, pulls the reader instantly like a magnetic tide. We're told who the poem is about, yet not revealed much beyond that to maintain curiosity. Overall, a befitting hook!
The first line itself made things clear from the get go. Salt is the narrator, the subject being Pepper. I like how you very cleverly used the phrase 'birds of a feather flock together' so effortlessly to demonstrate their similarities and how well they go together. They belong right next to next to each, enhancing the favour in each dish by their collective contribution.
I think these lines were so amusing, as they depict how they aren't the best of friends. Out of forced proximity, has arisen a relationship of closeness. They don't usually confide in each other, but are always there if the other needed them. How very original and personal!
Oh I absolutely LOVE this! The initial lines are so apt, as Salt offers itself if Pepper ever needed to cry. Throughout the poem, there are subtle hints that Pepper is going through a hard time. All the while, Salt is there to offer it comfort in its company. Their latent affection is so heartwarming to read. Also, the imagery in the last cited line is absolutely phenomenal! It paints such a vivid and beautiful scenery in the reader's imagination, certainly left a mark on me.
I found the format a tad conventional, but not particularly bad! You might want to look over capitalisation once more. But other than some tiny details I personally might've phrased or arranged differently, I don't find much else to suggest! One small thing I felt though was the poem being unnecessarily repetitive. In the middle stanzas, you mention their peculiar bond repeatedly while the final stanzas ask Peeper to wipe its tear on Salt, multiple times. I think you had already made the point and the repetition didn't make the additional impact to justify it. You could work more on compressing the overall dialogues and anchoring the narrative for future projects. If you wished to edit this one, you could try wrapping up a particular theme in a single stanza (even if that makes it lengthy) to make things stand out more. But at the end of the day, these are just my personal suggestions, so feel free to disagree! If you think the current form captures your vision for the poem better, I encourage you to stick with it.
Overall, this was a delightful poem with an unusual friendship. Salt and Pepper are such great metaphors to represent the wonderful people, who are always there for you no matter what. They might not be the first person you'd choose to confide in, but their forever presence by your side speaks volume of their silent support. We see how Salt and Pepper spend so much time in each other's company, even when they don't share an enthusiastic connection. But from this time long intimacy, unexpectedly arises affection and care. In a time of need, this secure presence is all what Pepper needs to overcome its struggles. Such a pleasant read, I had a great time reviewing this. Hope I get to read more from you, very soon.
<3 Thank you! Yep i def need to work on my pacing, thanks for pointing it out!
Hello, HildegardHope and happy Review Day! Valkyria here to leave a short review for your work. Let's get into it:
Just by the title alone, I was hooked into this poem, and the content kept my attention. The use of simple language and rhythm added to the poem's strengths because it still got the themes and metaphors across. Like Genevieve, I also interpreted Salt and Pepper to be two people. Whether they are friends, family, or lovers, their relationship is strained. Salt, realizing this, reaches out because they want to stay close, as said in lines like staying by Pepper's side, being their shoulder to cry on. I love how you referenced the substances like "saline" and "flavor" to be used in that metaphorical context. Well done!
<3 thanks!

which expresses a loyalty and a tether to the other person. I really love how throughout this poem it expresses that loyalty and love by the narrator giving reassurance to the subject of "pepper" to basically reinforce that they will always be a duo and always be present for them despite the hardships of life.Hi, HildegardHope, Genevieve here stopping in to review your work! Also, happy Review Month!
I really felt compelled by this poem by the title "Salt and Pepper" and I believe the content of the poem is very fitting as we read about the narrator expressing these thoughts to someone else. It creates two characters, the narrator and subject, and those "characters" act as the salt and pepper in this poem, as stated in the very first line of the poem.
I enjoyed the language usage and the way you really play around with the flavor and differences yet pairing of salt and pepper as used to be a metaphor for two people's relationship. The rhyming was really playful and simple but didn't take away at all from the meaning and content of the poem itself. I really loved the lines:
I think the shift in structure in the 5th verse, after a long break, resembles a shift in tone in the poem. It goes from giving images of the connection to now a sort of push and pull relationship and "salt" (aka the narrator) trying to reach out and express their loyalty and affections. This poem, despite being titled salt and pepper, is very sweet and endearing. This poem can be applied to so many different types of relationships that it also makes it relatable to the reader as well.
My primary suggestion would be grammar, especially towards the end, almost every line ends with a period, but those lines end up being fragments. I would be careful to be intentional with the grammar, to either use it correctly or not use it at all as an artistic decision. Grammar can really break the flow of a poem, especially when reading out loud and having to take those pauses where they are perhaps not necessary.
Overall, I really enjoyed this poem. It's playful and endearing at the same time. Thank you for posting this and keep writing! God bless.
thanks, <3 i'll work on my grammar
