Simply Free

In Poetry (Ages 13-16)

I like myself better
When the lights are all off
When the mirror is shattered
Tucked away in some box

When all of my thoughts
Are written down on a page
When my very soul
Is free from its cage

I like myself more
When my life, so it seems
Fades to the back seat
To a world made of dreams

When all I can do
Is rise to the skies
My pain is wiped away
The higher my mind flies

I love myself greatly
When the world fades from existence
Imagination is my king
In a world of no substance

Every shape I want
Every color I need
Where to live life to its fullest
One simply must believe

I'm my own best friend
When my pen starts to dance
Spinning and twirling
Tales of adventure and romance

Never must it end
Never need it stop
My pen begins to giggle
As it rotates like a top

I need myself millions
When my worlds begin to call
They praise me, the author
Who saved them from their fall

Only here am I a hero
Only here am I wise
Because though this world is not real
It possesses truth and not lies

I like myself better
Before I put down the pen
Before my imagination leaves
And the world comes back again

For then I'm free to explore
To love, to laugh, to fly
At last I'm simply free
From each tear I need to cry

I really liked it, the idea of this girl only liking herself when she's writing was good.

When my heart begins to beat
Or, so it seems
Was it not beating before?

When the world fades from existence
Imagination is my king
In a world of no substance
I really like these lines, but existence and substance are a little bit of a stretch when trying to rhyme

Where to live life to its fullest
One simply must believe
I think simply and must should be switched to say must simply believe

I need myself millions
A little bit awkward

Really good job!

You really do write beautifully. I've read some of your work besides this and all of them demonstrate the same air of writing from the soul and letting the words spread over the page (screen, really) very naturally and skilfully. I love your writing! All the time! It's brilliant, it really is. Even though some of the rhyming was a bit off, overall it was wonderful. Keep it up, never ever stop!

That's just what translation is, I think. That's all speaking is. Listening to the other and trying to see past your own biases to glimpse what they're trying to say. Showing yourself to the world, and hoping someone else understands.
