Karana

I could feel my throat being slowly crushed. Kujimaru had increased the pressure slightly, apparently to provoke Kai even more. I couldn't breathe...my eyesight was going black...

"Or what?" Kujimaru asked as I began to slow in my struggling.

One chance. I only had one last chance to free myself. I brought my hand to his wrist as I called on my magic; hell, I'd burn his hand off if I had to!

He noticed and said something I didn't understand. An incantation, obviously, after his hand was enveloped in electricity and the spell coursed through me. I let out the only scream I could manage, and then I was free. He dropped me, and I collapsed on the ground at his feet.

"Kai..."

I fainted.

The fire in Kai's eyes was burning even fiercer now as he stared at Kujimaru from across the clearing. Karana would be okay, but he was still angry at what Kujimaru did.

Renian and Tyrant finally got to their feet and gathered their weapons from the ground. They were about to join the fight when Draco's voice breathed through their minds. "No, this is his battle." They looked to see Draco back on his feet under the tree he was thrown into. He kept one of his forelegs off the ground as if it hurt to stand on it.

Renian and Tyrant wanted to help, but they listened to the dragon and stayed put.

Kujimaru began to stalk toward Kai. "I see you have obtained the power of Fire. However, this new trick of yours will not save you. You are still a weak half-breed." When Kujimaru had moved a few yards away from Karana, Renian and Tyrant went to her. Tyrant lifted her onto his shoulder and together they carried Karana to safety. Kujimaru was no longer interested in them so he ignored them. His eyes were all for Kai and his new ability.

"I'll show you weak." Kai lifted his newly formed sword over his head and plunged it into the fallen tree. The flames from the sword ran across the bark, lighting it aflame. Kai heaved and lifted the burning tree over his head with his sword still inside it. If Kujimaru was surprised by Kai's strength he didn't show it.

Kai let out a grunt as he threw the tree at his brother. Kujimaru merely lifted his hand to the tree soaring through the air and said, "Raiakk." A bolt of lightning split the tree in half so the two pieces landed on either side of him.

Kai had already moved and was charging toward his opponent. He lifted his gigantic sword over his head. Kujimaru leaped back with a graceful bound just before the sword dropped down over his head. Kai's sword smashed into the ground, and the strength of his swing caused the ground around all of them to shack. The vibrations caused all the birds in the area to fly out of the trees and into the sky.

Kujimaru's eyes narrowed. "It is speed, not power, that will win this fight." His body disappeared again. As soon as it did Kai spun around and swung his sword. Kujimaru had reappeared behind him, but Kai had seen the attack. Their swords collided, and Kujimaru's katana shattered like glass against Kai's sword.

For a split second Kujimaru showed fear in his eyes as he leaped back to keep a safe distance. The fire in Kai's eyes burned like the flames of hell itself. Just like he would with the magical flame in his soul, he reached into the sword to call upon its power.

Kujimaru threw away his broken sword and said, "Tere Raiassou." Both of his hands coursed with electricity. Before the energy was yellow, but now it was blue. He had upped his power so he could finish Kai off with one final attack. "It ends now," he said before rushing forward.

Inside Kai's soul the energy that generated his magic was a flame, in the Tenjin it was more like a spark. As soon as he touched the spark with his mind it burst into flames. The world around him flashed in a bright white light. When the light was gone everything was black and white. Kujimaru's movements had turned to a crawl. He was moving so slowly that it seemed like he wasn't moving at all. Time had slowed down. As Kai witnessed this phenomena the only thing he could think about was Fire.

An everlasting ocean of flame burned in Kai's mind as the power of Fire began to increase within his sword. It kept generating more and more energy until the point where he thought the sword would explode. At that moment he knew what to do. Kai lifted the sword over his head and focused the energy into one single attack. He brought the sword down with one powerful swing and said the one word that would release the power.

"ORAZA!"

The surroundings went back to normal in a rush of colour and light the moment his sword touched the ground. Fire flowed out of the blade like a tidal wave. It consumed everything in its path. Before Kujimaru was taken by the fire, wings shot out of the back of his shirt and wrapped around his body.

When there was no more energy left to use Kai stopped the flow of fire from his sword. When the flames had disappeared he saw that half the forest had been burned down in its path. The damage continued on for a mile and a half before he could see the edge of the forest that had survived.

The power of Fire left the sword like a breeze. The Tenjin transformed back to its original state, it's blue blade glowing with a feint orange that slowly faded away. As the sword transformed, so did Kai. His eyes and wings turned back to normal and his muscles reduced to their regular size.

A sudden wave of exhaustion caused Kai to fall to his knees. As he panted frantically he sniffed the air. The smell of charred wood was thick in the air, but there was no sign of Kujimaru's scent under it. "He got away," Kai mumbled.

Pain, like a white hot flame suddenly shot up through both his arms. Kai let out a ragged scream as every single muscle in his arms spasmed and cramped. He dropped the Tenjin and fell onto his back, unable to move his arms due to the immense pain. He was in so much pain that he couldn't hear anyone's voices as they approached.

Tyrant looked at the two and then Draco, "What are we supposed to do now?" He asked. He wasn't so sure he liked all this.



*cry*

They didn't have enough time to be shocked at all the destruction. When Kai keeled over in pain they ran to his side. He was clutching his arms and rocking back and forth.

"Kai, what's wrong?" Renian asked.

"My arms!" His voice was thick with agony.

Tyrant turned to Draco and asked, "What do we do?"

Draco approached the three of them. He had to hop with his front leg because one of them hurt too much to walk on. "This is merely a side effect of the Tenjin's new power," he explained. As the dragon spoke, Kai's cries of pain began to lessen. "The sword you all saw was the Tenjin's Fire transformation, the Blazing Inferno. When the wielder changes the Tenjin into this form his strength increases exponentially, which is why Kai's muscles were so big. When he reverted back to normal he let all the energy out at once instead of doing it little by little. In doing this his muscles contracted faster than they should have, causing his arms to cramp and spasm. Over time, he will learn control over this, but right now this is his price for using the Tenjin's powers."

Kai's cries of agony had finally stopped. He rolled onto his back began to pant.

"Are you okay?" Renian asked.

"I am now." He slowly sat up and got to his feet, careful not to move his arms so much in case the pain came back. His head moved left and right in a frantic motion as he looked for Karana. "Where's Karana?" he asked, his voice a little panicked.

"She's fine," Tyrant said, "We moved her away from the fight. She's unconscious, but she'll make it."

Tyrant helped Kai to his feet and brought him too where Karana lay. Kai went to his knees beside her. He closed his eyes and said, "I wasn't able to protect her..."

Karana

My body was numb...it tingled everytime I tried to move. My throat was sore and felt like it was on fire...Kujimaru had nearly crushed my neck...

I heard voices in the distance, and faint cries. Kai? Was he in pain? Draco was talking over the noise, saying something about transformations, power, cramps, and prices. What was going on? What had happened?

The next moment, I heard someone kneel beside me. Then Kai whispered, "I wasn't able to protect her..."

I moaned softly as I forced my eyes open, and the sound hurt. It stung my throat. "Kai..." I coughed when my voice was raw. "It's okay..."

I took one of his hands in my own. "I'll be okay."

Kai gave her a weak smile and said, "I wasn't able to protect you this time, Karana. But I promise I'll get stronger so it'll never happen again."

Karana smiled back and squeezed Kai's hand a little tighter. "Help me up." Kai pulled her to her feet. She wobbled a little and had to put a hand on Kai's shoulder to steady herself.

That's when she saw the devastation. Her eyes widened at the sight of charred black forest. "What did all this!?" Karana said, then started to cough because of the pain in her throat when she spoke.

"I did it," Kai said.

She looked at him with something close to horror in her eyes. "You did this?"

"He did it to protect all of you," Draco said. They all looked at him. "The only casualties in this battle are the trees. Over time they will grow back, such is the cycle of life. He unleashed the Tenjin's power over Fire to defeat Kujimaru. If he had not, Kujimaru would have killed all of you."

Karana looked up at Kai's face. "So, is he..."

Kai shook his head. "He's still alive. He managed to shield himself from my attack and teleported to safety."

Tyrant crossed his arms. "I sure hope we don't run into that guy again."

"Me, too," Kai said, "but knowing my brother that would be very unlikely."

"I thought your mother was the only family you had," Karana said.

"So did I," Kai said, "until Draco took me to the Tenjin's resting place. Kujimaru felt the Tenjin's presence and found me. He told me he was my father's first son."

"So he really is your brother?" Renian said, a little surprised. "Then why would he want to kill you?"

"He's my half-brother," Kai corrected her. "He was born centuries before my mother and father ever met. He hates me because I'm a half-breed, and he thinks I'm not worthy to wield the Tenjin."

"Does that mean he's a full wolf demon?" Karana asked.

Kai nodded. "For the most part, he hates me because his father's blood runs through my veins. Kujimaru is very dangerous, if we ever run into him again our best chance is to run."

Draco cut in at that moment. "It would be best to find someplace safe to sleep for the night. You will all need your strength for the journey ahead."

With that they went off to a safer part of the forest to set up camp for the night.

Karana

It had been several hours since we had set up camp. Our fire blazed in the cave, where Tyrant and Renian sat, talking. Kai had gone off somewhere, and I was at a nearby stream, swimming and bathing.

My throat still throbbed, but I could speak. My shoulder was also sore from where Kujimaru had dropped me. I would be fine, though; I had lived through worse.

But, as I floated with all but my head submerged, my mind raced. Kai had been thrown around like he weighed nothing! Was he alright? I had heard him in pain in my waking moments, but had it been real? And what had provoked him? He had transformed during the battle, but why? What had set him off?

I dove under the surface of the water and swam quickly to shore, coming out of the water and standing on the sandy shore. I was glad that the sky was dark and the moon had not come out yet...it would have been quite embarrassing to find someone watching me - undressed, soaking wet, and thoguhtful.

I picked up the drying cloth and wrapped it around me, blocking out the chill of a gentle breeze.

Why was I thinking so much? Why could I not get Kai out of my mind?

Was I falling for him?

Certainly not...

**How's that for a twist? Hopefully you can build off of this. Give us some less dramatic moments; the calm after the storm, right?**

Renian poked the logs of the fire with the stick. Her ears twitched anxiously as the wind changed slightly. This is so weird. I'd never thought I'd find more Dragon Knights! Or know how to become one! Or even open up to so many people! So much has happened since that one trip to the city. Tyrant caught me. I fell head over heels for him. We found Karana. Figured out that they were all Dragon Knights and even fought with magic for the first time. It's so wierd! "Are you nervous about all this?" She asked, looking over at Tyrant.
