"Right. So Joe's looking to get back at us too." Valeri frowned and took a bite out of her sausage. "Ah! Hot!" Their eyes widened as they quickly chewed and swallowed the piece of sausage. "Haaah." She waved the rest of her sausage in the air to cool it down. "Okay. Well, if I was an arrogant wizard, I'd do some magic stuff to destroy my enemies, while convincing everyone I'm their hero. So what lie might Joe tell about us?"
“That either we tricked him into giving away his valuable secrets.” Vendetta took a thoughtful bite of their sausage. “Or that Cody is mind-controlling us.”
Dawn glowed a surprised white. “But Cody can’t do that.”
“Joe doesn’t care.”

“-Joe situation.” Dusk floated to the couple. “Anger’s still running high.”

Valeri chewed the rest of her sausage loudly. She swallowed and said, “That good-for-nothing wizard had the audacity to send his hot pink pigeons here and threaten us!”
Cody and Khalil exchanged a glance. “What exactly did he say?”
“That we need to stop chasing after him or we’d ‘face the consequences.’” Vendetta sighed. “Whatever that means.”
Khalil hummed. “That must mean he’s getting scared of you.”
“That, or his plan’s coming together.”

Valeri scoffed. "I'm sure we'll be able to take him down, no matter what kind of ridiculous plan he comes up with."
"Don't be too sure... keep in mind that Joe is as tricky as he is skilled in magic." Cody sighed. "Well, I suppose we should look for that evidence, then."
Vendetta nodded. “To Houston to go. To catch the snake under the blossom.”

After a quick breakfast, they all packed up the mattresses and campfire kit, then hopped into the car again. Cody slid into the driver’s seat and inputted Houston into the GPS. “It’s going to take twenty hours to get there, if we don’t take any breaks. We should probably split it into two days though.”
Vendetta chewed on their knuckle. "Here's to hoping that Joe waits until then."
Dawn settled on Valeri's lap. "Fear not! I'm sure the writers will be gracious and make this work out."
Vendetta blinked. "Writers?"
"The writers of our fate, of course! The two fates."

“Wasn’t it the three fates?” Valeri frowned. “You’re being weird, Dawn, and I’m not sure I like it.”
The sword hummed. “Ah well. Best that the characters stay ignorant, I suppose. Anyways! On to Houston!” Dawn glowed a cheery bubblegum pink as Cody stepped on the gas.
Vendetta shook their head. “Oh, Dawn.” They drummed their fingers on their thigh. “What could we even be looking for in Houston? Why would Joe be in Houston when he claims to be exploring your house in New York?”
Khalil shrugged. “I’m sure it will be painfully Joe, whatever it is.”

"Yeah." Valeri stared out the window at the meadows and towns they were passing for a moment, then turned to their sibling and the weapons. "Hey, do you guys wanna make bets on what it could be?"
"What would I bet though?" Dawn glowed pale orange.
"Uh. We don't have to bet anything. The winner can just get bragging rights." Valeri shrugged.
"I bet he was signing his books. It seems Joe like to me."
Vendetta waved their hand. "Wouldn't that too be obvious, though?"

Dawn hummed. "I'd guess he was eating. Maybe it was some kind of fancy meal at a Michelin starred restaurant... Like gourmet Mexican food or something. It must have been delicious..."
Valeri stared at Dawn for a moment. "Should I be concerned about your obsession with food?"
